I know a lot of people think that CGI is a bit controversial in anime communities, I personally think it can be a hit or miss. But i'm curious what everyone thinks that is a good example of CGI in anime that is used really well, it can be new or older.

Some theatrical anime films have excellent CGI like Captain Harlock, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Lupin III: The First, Dragon Quest: Your Story, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Tekken: Blood Vengeance and some TV anime like Beastars and Houseki no Kuni.

Personally, Waza no Tabibito and W-Tails Cat: A Strange Presence are my 3DCG guilty pleasure and i very much like them a lot.

The Sky Crawlers had tons of CG, & it's easily one of the most gorgeous films I've ever seen.

I really like the CGI visuals that Kamikaze Douga made for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's openings. I was so excited when I heard that they were coming back for part 6 (they didn't do visuals for parts 4 and 5's openings), and they did not let me down.

Also, No Game No Life Zero makes great use of CGI in the Schwi vs. Jibril fight. I didn't even notice that they used CGI for Schwi until my third re-watch.

yeah, the series does use CG for all the car scenes but it's completely 2D in the 3 reanimated movies. the CG doesn't look that good in the 1st stage but it came out in the 90s so it's excusable, plus the music and everything else makes up for it lmao but the CG improves every season. and even tho the 1st stage has the worst animation from the entire series, it's still my favorite season xD

BanG Dream, D4DJ, the music portions in Selection Project, Healer Girl all have great cgi.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Yup agree. Came here to post this. D4DJ First and Second mix shows how good the CGI is. That jump from Bang S3 to D4DJ First Mix was such a huge improvement in the same year
Its even better watching them with Anime4k on a 2160p monitor. Everything is so sharp and crisp.

I'll add Trigun Stampede as well.
LL Superstar 1 & 2 also has neat CGI.

The early seasons of attack on titan worked great, better than the later ones in my opinion.
They suffered from the usual issue of CG elememts updating more often than the 2d elements but they managed to hide it well and it's only really noticeable if you go frame by frame.

The Cannon Fodder short (from Memories) also did a great job especially for 1995.
The whole thing is shot as one conticuous take but that's hard especially for the scale the short was going for so CG was used to mask some of the transitions. It's seamless and I only started noticing on my second watch.

Beastars, land of the lustrous and 86. Also think the cgi used in the fight scenes of Levius was very good but general scenes were a lil bit jarring

any studio orange anime.

most environment 3d shots in high budget shows: stuff like death parade, demon slayer,  jojo

and then there is that one lupin the third movie that beats all of these by a long shot

I'm really enjoying Trigun Stampede. Every episode is a feast for the eyes. I really love all the character designs, and the opening is my favorite of this season. I've known about the original Trigun since I started watching anime because it's a classic but I've never seen it, so have that in mind. I started watching it because of the Luck of the Draw challenge, but I ended up really enjoying myself.

Movies like Captain Herlock (2013), Appleseed Saga Ex Machina, Appleseed Alpha and Lupin III: The First come to mind. And there's great 2D/3D integration in movies like Ame wo Tsugeru Hyouryuu Danchi.

In TV not a fan of studio Orange, I prefer the clunkier, but more immersive 3D worlds of Polygon Pictures. Something rubs me the wrong way in the visuals of shows like Beastars and Houseki no Kuni, despite being animated more fluidly.
Both studios pale in comparison to what you can see in donghua (random examples: Apotheosis which is originally made on 60 fps and Tomb of Fallen Gods) or Disney shows like Star Wars: The Bad Batch (and the latest Clone Wars seasons of course).
The high water marks are Arcane and Warhammer 40K Angels of Death, but we rarely get expensive shows like that.

I havent watched the 90s original, but looking over the reddits and this forum, the community has eventually come round to accepting/acknowledging that the CGI is done very well in this show.
But I liked the CGI from the beginning.

Its just that people's brains take time to adapt from watching traditional handdrawn inking and coloring frames to CGI smoothness, and animation fluidity from janky 12 fps to 30-60 fps.

.................

Oh, for OP, lets not forget Comixwave, their CGI making it look very traditional looks great, especially in the recent Suzume movie..

Everything that Studio Orange puts out is remarkable CGI. Studio MAPPA are also getting great at refining the usage of CGI with Dorohedoro and CSM. Good CGI is unnoticable.

All I can think of is Houseki no Kuni. Other than that, I usually think CGI is just a turn-off. At the same time, I feel like I'd have liked even more if it wasn't CGI.

I believe that like others have mentioned Houseki no Kuni, Trigun Stampede, Dorohedoro are great examples of CGI usage. As for unmentioned ones I think that Godzilla Singular Point was one I really enjoyed.

Also I enjoyed drifting dragons.

There's https://myanimelist.net/anime/40082/Lupin_III__The_First

There are a lot of donghua with good CGI. They usually don't go for the cel shaded look which you might associate with animation.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/52597/Si_Wuxie and the related character series have very excellent cgi.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/40111/Nezha_Zhi_Mo_Tong_Jiang_Shi . It's a movie, so it has high end CGI
https://myanimelist.net/anime/42284/Yuan_Long
There's a trailer for Nikki and the God of Dreams which has beautiful CGI.

I think this quality of CGI is quite expensive to produce, so I don't think Japanese studios have the budget for it, except for big movies.

I didn’t even know Black Rock Shooter was CGI when I first watched it. The animation crosses the fine line between 3D and really-good-2D-animation.

Anything orange studio animated, the cgi of dorohedoro and the eva movies. The soul gems of madoka, the key of nisekoi, the beyblades of metal fusion and bursts, ufotable, there's a ton of good CGI, I just don't want the industry to become full CGI.
