How picky are you when deciding on a new anime?

Just interested to know if you think long and perhaps do some research before trying a new anime or not?
Get the idea from some people that they try almost any new anime.

I'm not like that. Usually, I read a lot beforehand and then try a few (but nowhere near all) anime each season.
And even then, I often watch only 1-2 eps and drop it is it's boring.

Do you stick with anime even if you don't really like it?

Kinda picky, I guess. I always check the synopsis and if it has the "right" genre and themes. Nowadays I also tend to drop shows more easily than before.

I just go for it most of the time. If I don't like sth, then I give it only 1 episode and move on to sth else. I don't add these on my dropped list tho cuz I usually feel like it isn't fair to judge sth based on only 1 episode. Well, on most cases at least.

When it comes to seasonals, I usually only watch sequels, cuz I want to binge watch newer series after they've finished airing, so that way I also know what the general consensus on that anime is.

i'm not too sure, with anime i don't think i am at all. i never care for the rating and i'll just add something after skimming the synopsis and genres and give it a shot when i feel like it, but i've started looking into things more recently and seeing if i can find a trailer or clip of the show online first just to find out what i'm about to get into before watching it

i've also been wanting to be a bit more picky as of late specifically with manga because i keep making bad choices and reading some stinking bad terrible absolutely horrible stuff, but with manga it feels a lot harder since there's no way to know what's going to be inside of it until you read it, it's not like i could look up a trailer for it before reading and a review isn't going to tell me a lot tbh

I go by the genre, if I read it in manga format, and when I don’t know about it, I give myself 1-3 episodes to see how it pans out. If I feel it’s boring or the quality is bad enough, I drop it’s azz disappointed. However I feel it’s all good with the early episodes, I’ll continue watching it throughout..

I'll watch an anime if it has cute or hot girls, and will avoid all-male shows, mecha, shounen, yaoi. Main male character is fine though.

Personally I wasn't and still am not too picky with anime. I can find stuff and to me the key visuals and synopsis are usually enough to get me interested enough in an anime. I still haven't dropped anything. Oh and I also use the same method for manga which is my main  focus these days.

I know I often get rewarded with something cool and entertaining if I just act on impulses and watch this or that spontaneously, rather than thinking about it to long if I really feel like it today.

I'm not picky at all. I would watch anything that has great characters and within my liked genres. Nowadays I rather watch the animes I started but never finished, so I rarely look around in my ptw and the new seasons, but if I'm really interested I go out of my way and watch some of them too.

If I can watch the show as it's airing, then I'm not picky in the slightest, I don't mind watching anything and will watch most of the shows that are currently airing.

Even if it's a show that's already finished airing, I'm not too picky. I'll usually choose based off of genres, cover art and occasionally the synopsis, so it doesn't take me long to pick a show, but I don't watch that wide of a range of already finished airing shows.

If it's an airing show then I'll stick with it even if it's really bad because it's only 1 ep a week. However, if it's a show that isn't currently airing then I'm usually pretty quick to drop if I think it's going to be boring.

If it doesn't have the mecha tag, I'll watch it. Even if the synopsis makes it sound interesting, it doesn't mean I won't find it boring when I eventually start watching it.

I’m very picky when it comes to choosing anime. It should have good presentation and an appealing art-style, and as little fanservice as possible.

Not as picky as I used to be. With this current burnout I’m experiencing, I’m lucky to find one thing that catches my interest xD

When I’m not burnt out, I don’t even think I’m that picky as well. I don’t like to do research on an anime (since I like to go into things blind) and I’m open to watching pretty much anything that seems good (except shonen maybe).

I used to plan out what I was going to watch next but nowadays, I just go with my gut.

EXTREMELY picky. In fact, I don't even watch anime anymore, but it would have to be on par with anime like Ranma 1/2, The Slayers, Mai-HiME/Otome, Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon (90's), Serial Experiments Lain, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Strawberry Panic, good, to be even considered by me to watch.

I do it like this:

  1. Watch the first episode with no idea what you're about to watch. (Just pick a random anime from your suggestions or people who share similar interests with you)
  2. If it interests you keep watching.
  3. If it gets boring, then check out the details (synopsis, genre, studio etc.)
  4. If those details cater to you, then perhaps you should continue.
  5. Otherwise drop.

Ever since I've started doing this, I can't do it any other way. The feeling of watching an anime without any clue of what it's about, gives you a kind of amusement. Besides, imo, synopsis and trailers are just mini spoilers.

Very picky, I'm watching some sequels just so I'm keeping up with it even though it's average (Like the MCU really). New series I do research to see if the creators are people who make stuff that interest me, adulting is hard so not as much time for anime when I was a teen/young adult

I don't really bother with ratings either. Often people rate stuff that they're not even the target group for, or a genre they hate anyway, so why would I trust something from people that were bound to end up hating it anyway.

Very picky tbh. I chose my anime based on my mood, location, time and genre of the anime. If I dont like the start I would propably drop it after one or two episodes even tho I know the best part comes after 5 episodes.

Not picky in the sense that I usually don't read the synopsis (beyond like, the first few sentences) and reviews of something I think I might be interested in from the artwork or title alone. I'm super sensitive to spoilers, and I feel like reviews or even the synopsis itself, can sometimes tell me things that I would want to discover for myself as I watch. I'll usually give just about anything a try if the artwork or the title looks interesting.

But I do also try to find anime that match my current mood. Like if I just finished watching a more emotionally-heavy show, or the conclusion of a series that I had been really into, I'd choose something a lot lighter and/or more relaxing to follow it. I don't drop anime, but I'll often put a show on hold if I know I'm just not in the right mood for it at the moment, and I'll pick something else instead.

All an anime needs, to get me to try it, is for it's cover-art, to look pretty to me.

Idol shows don't count.

Very. I used to be quite the opposite, head diving into basically anything and grind my teeth trying to finish almost everything that I'd started., which doesn't really make a lot of sense if you have limited time on your hand. I'm getting busier by the day so naturally I'm getting pickier, and if I do decide to go all out to try something just for the sake of it, I'll just drop it whenever I feel like it (which I won't even update on this website).

I am picky but in a different sense, most of the time genre doesn't matter to me as much as the score itself, I know there might be some underrated gems out there but I don't have enough time to try each and every anime that is why I only watch most popular or highly rated shows.

I'm fairly picky. Then again, I don't pay much attention to seasonal anime and watch whatever anime I'm interested in regardless of when it came out, but the new anime that does get on my radar are the ones that get popular while they're airing and usually I even get a whiff of it possibly being mediocre and pass on it.

I like to read the synopsis first and if it seems somewhat interesting to me I'll look a bit further. It might be strange but I also usually look at the average star rating from users here before making up my mind on watching a show. Usually because I think a lot of people know what's trash and what's not

I'm pretty indecisive, I often still spin a wheel or flip a coin to decide on what to watch next. I've been trying to choose from my PTW more because it's getting really large. Often I'll look at the show's premise or art, but usually it's just how I feel that day.

As for sticking to what I watch, I use to drop a lot more series (both anime and other stuff), but idk since I joined this website for some reason I feel obligated to finish everything I start, which has made me a little more cautious in what I watch & what I don't.

One of the biggest determiners is how long it is (or if it has multiple seasons). Sometimes I'm in the mood for something quick, other times I'm looking for something to invest a few weeks/months into. There's also genre's or themes to consider, and I mostly avoid things like sports or idol anime (though I will at least look at them to see if it grabs my attention). Other than that, I really just go for it, and if I don't like it within the first 3-6 episodes (depending on the length of course), then I'll watch something else. I've only been watching since late 2020 and I've expanded my searches to include anime from now until at least 1995, so I've got quite a few to choose from.

Though, the increase in the amount of seasonals is killing me, so I'm gonna try to limit myself to no more than 15 anime/season when I'm busy.

Well :
- first, I look at the genre (there is some genres I'm not into such as Horror for example)
- secondly, I read the synopsis (which quite frankly does eliminate a lot of animes from each new season already)
- and generally I try all the animes left in the new season (although I sometimes get more picky if there is already a lot of animes I want to watch, in which case I will also watch the pvs, ask people for their opinions and such...)

Time is at a premium so a bit.

If it looks vaguely interesting I’ll add it to my list, but the order I watch them is definitely me on some picky shit lol… Im pretty new to this so I’m trying to watch the most important stuff, but I start with whats most interesting at the moment.

I also do the thing where I watch happy shows after a string of serious or unhappy shows, and vice versa
