Check out Tsuki ga Kirei, which is pretty close to being as "realistic" as possible in its portrayal of young romance.

Yes, this the one that I wanted to mention. The others that I have seen are mostly otaku fantasies about a relantionship.

If you forget about the 'youth drug' aspect, ReLife is pretty realistic as a romance manga/anime can be. Anime rushed the manga's events though.

I also highly recommend Tsuki ga Kirei.
However I can recommend Just Because! even more. It's been 5 years since I saw that but I remember it as an very realistic romance anime.

Haven't watched it myself yet but, as far as realistic romance is concerned, i've heard really good things about Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (KareKano for short).

Can't say how "real" they are especially that they are not mainly targeted as romance or maybe for one title.
Felt the big realism at Relationship shown [past] from Cynthia at Great Pretender aswell as with Lucy in Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
When it comes to slightly other look at relationships would say that Nana is quite more real.
Also Tsuki ga kirei and Koe no Katachi [bonding not dating/developing it] were quite real, as for Koe no Katachi it was a background stuff and Tsuki ga Kirei was so damn boring...
Other romances which I've seen and that's not that much, not even close to even try saying that they are "realistc"

I think that Sakuta and Mai have one of the more realistic romantic relationships I have seen in Anime. There's good depth to it and you can tell that beneath the joshing around and trolling there is genuine love and affection between them. Despite this the nature of the show does put strains on their relationship. Sakuta is often forced to spend significant lengths of time alone with other women and while Mai trusts him, she does get realistically annoyed by this.

Still, both of them understand that they love each other and that love is about trust. As a result they are able to work through these problems with the maturity and realism that a lot of melodramas lack.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Bunny Girl Senpai is one of the most unrealistic depiction of romance I have ever seen. I can well assure you that in a relationship of a ~17yo couple the guy constantly talking about and meeting up with other girls and even pretending to date them wouldn't last a single day. At this age you don't have this concept of love and trust that you describe, this is something that couples which are married for 50 years have but not some teenagers that barely know each other for some weeks. The only reason this might look realistic is because the characters are already so unreal and out of touch with the world that it might as well be realistic again in their case. But OP asked about realistic romance and this is far away from it.

But he is literally me. (unironically) Back in HS before all the metoo witch hunts you could be friends with a girl while having a gf and not worry about a girl getting mad at you 5 years later and crying rape.

I may make you feel but I can't make you think.

Paradise Kiss. You'll get annoyed with the protagonists, but that's the way they are. It's a josei, after all, so yes, it's not exactly the kind of otaku fantasies we like from most animes.

The most realistic romance anime would be a modern setting Slice of Life with boring characters.

And my personal number one favorite garden of words.. When I say it's most realistic it's Cause I and my associate professor in university were close like the main character in this anime movie ..

Surprised nobodyʼs suggested Nana yet.

It deals with joys and hardships of various kinds of human relationships, and doesnʼt portray that standard, overused outlook on love.

Honestly, throw Konosuba in there because it's a slow burn on any romantic developments and no harem whatsoever despite the overabundance of suitors for Kazuma. The premise is obviously random and unrealistic but I bring it up with these other HS love triangles that were mentioned.

And I get where you're coming from. It's tiring seeing all this built-up exposure with a guy protag that ultimately automatically leads to a romantic relationship with one of the females in the cast. Couldn't be me bringing up a series like that.

By far Tsuki ga Kirei for me. While the ending phases are different, there were a lot of similarities my first relationship had with what was happening here at the start that it made me self-reflect hard on the good times and the tougher portions, especially after leaving to university a few years back. Definitely the one romance series that emotionally got me invested unlike the majority of others.

It's hard to say cause most romance shows tend to have an odd suspension of disbelief in fairly predictable timing. For me, though, it was Bloom Into You; the characters' dynamics and relationship feel more grounded and believable while still being quite complex, and it also doesn't go through the typical silly soap opera theatrics I've seen many others go through. Whatever drama or conflict that comes into play is implemented in a natural and timely manner. The supporting cast are also quite involved and don't just mostly sit on the sidelines, in fact they're often heavily associated and/or involved with Yuu and Touko to various extents. While not flawless or foolproof, Bloom Into You was one of the few romance animanga series where I was consistently invested as opposed to around 90% of the other fodder out there.
