I get it that it's their signature costume, but do they have a copy of their costume or what? They wear those even after bath?

Character design takes time and money.

It’s way easier on animators to have the characters wear the same outfit all the time rather than having them change clothes frequently, since familiarizing yourself with the proportions and perspectives of one set design is much more simple than doing the same with a rapidly changing one. It’s kind of a hassle memorizing multiple different designs, no need to add extra pressure by having them deal with variants as well.

But to REALLY answer your question, yes they absolutely do have multiple copies of them. That’s why you never see them wash them either. 😜

It's more practical, that's why I like when the characters are always changing their clothes in an anime, like Yor-san from Spy x Family.

The same thing with hairstyles, Hori-san used to change her hairstyle every time.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

because they should look iconic, easy to recognize and bait cosplayers.

Of course that's because it usually doesn't matter. The design is often supposed to be an extension of a character's personality, so it doesn't need to change.

Don't they put it in the machine while taking a bath and then get into pajama after bathing and have fresh clothes the next day? It's probably not like that in real life but it's not that illogical.

Wait, don't we all? You mean that you have more than one t-shirt? What for?

i am now convinced that the convenience of a uniform is part of why high school is the default setting for an anime

For the same reason that Western cartoon characters wear the same clothes. Every time a character has to wear a new outfit, the design has to be approved, and it's just more trouble than it's worth.

Because it's easier to animate that way.

Easier on the animation budget to design characters to wear the same clothes. It's also done this way with many Western animated titles.

Same clothes as in... school uniform? If the setting of an anime is school, surely the characters wear school uniform most of the time.

The tropes of television site calls it "Limited Wardrobe" -- as others have pointed out, school uniforms and otherwise repeated outfits make things easier on animators and other staff.

Oddly enough, the much-maligned "Endless Eight" arc of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya '09 actually does feature characters wearing different casual clothes in each episode as they go about their looped summer vacation.

I don't even think this is common. At all.

Maybe I can think of some shows where characters are almost always wearing their school or work uniform but its all situations where I consider it to make sense. Like they are at school or work.
