Do you use a VPN when browsing Anime? Switching your location to Japan, for example, gives you access to titles like; When They Cry and Made in Abyss on Netflix.

If so, what VPN do you use and what country do you usually switch to?

Just recently got NordVPN (not a sponsor) and have been trying to become more secure with my privacy, as well as unlocking new anime on my Netflix feed. Want to hear your thoughts.

I use free vpn servers hosted by volunteers in Japan. The experience I have is mixed.

On one hand, it's free and the connection speed is solid in many cases. Enough for streaming anime, although I haven't tried playing online games (and it's probably a bad idea doing so anyway)

On the other hand, the vpn server can be unstable. You can suddenly lose connection (rare, but happened a few times). Some servers may be blocked by streaming services, and you need to try using a different vpn server. With a paid service, you avoid all this hassle.

From my experience, Abema tends to be very aggressive when it comes to enforcing region-lock (that wasn't the case a year or so ago), while TVer doesn't enforce as strictly.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

I'm using ProtonVPN, there are both free and paid plans. It can even block ads and trackers from websites + route all traffic through Switzerland for double protection.
I can use it on daily basis, but usually turn if off for online games as it proves unstable sometimes. Or game recognizes my network traffic as super fishy and cuts me off :D

As for the security itself, I don't believe anything is 100% foul proof. Also there are sometimes reports that VPN company handled data to police even with all this super-no-log-policy etc.

Homemade and Express, for a few years now. I usually 'smart area' connection to make it as fast as possible but if I'm using a streaming service and can't access certain series I will change to whatever. This is really the only benefit of using a VPN, honesty.

Most people who fall into the category of wanting a VPN buy it under a false premise: usually privacy 'protection' of data, which is nonsense.
A VPN doesn't 'protect' your data at all, you do. A VPN is just a private tube you travel through which comes out mumbled and jumbled out the other end making it impossible for your ISP to decipher where you've been. Most if not all VPN IPs are tagged by websites so even the websites you're using know you're using one, sometimes blocking access altogether. If you're signed into a Google account or using any sort of Google Syncing this is counter intuitive as you'll fool the ISP but won't fool Google, who, (if they wanted) could request records despite you using a VPN. Make sure you're using a VPN that isn't hosted in a country that can legally request records or the usage of the program is useless. You should never use a free VPN, ever. Those companies will sell your preference traffic because they literally are mining it from you whenever you use the service.
Lie until what you want to be true becomes truth. Lie until you can't remember what's a lie and what isn't.  Lie until you aren't lying anymore!

VPN doesn't work on my Netflix. I usually use VPN to see Reddit (it was blocked on my country). It was VPN Turbo, a free application.

No, I don't have to. I've barely ever used a VPN except for watching videos that are copyright claimed in the US.

I use a free one whenever I connect to public Wi-Fi, but I wouldn't want to use it more than I need too. Most of the free ones suck, and I don't want to buy one.

Most VPN providers throttle your bandwidth while the VPN is in use. Express VPN is one of the few that don't, and is one of the reasons why I use them.

I don't bother using VPNs for anime, so I just watch what I want on 9anime or AnimeKisa.

Geoblocking is just more proof that streaming services are a scam.

I would have told some redneck/millennial OK echo boomer for being a Funiroll shill. Her money, her loss! Enjoy getting scammed by power companies and Sony. That's the two-way street for the idiot.

Not getting a VPN for Hulu either and Hulu is a scam also.

I've been using ProtonVPN, which has free servers, some of which are out of Japan. I can't say I use it to watch anime, mostly use it when I'm connecting to WiFi connections outside my home. I don't have anything negative to say about it, especially when its free :)

Why jump through hoops to break the regional lock of netflix when you could literally just download whatever you wanna watch for free?
I get "supporting le industry" when they make it simple to do so, but they don't, if you have to use a VPN to watch certain stuff. So just torrent.

I think commercial vpn providers are a waste of money.
- They advertise for confidentiality and security on the web via encryption but nowadays even websites that don't need encryption are encrypted so stacking up the vpn encryption is only a waste of your cpu's time.
- They advertise for privacy by masking your traffic from your isp and your government but they actually give themselves all the power to monitor your traffic just like your isp can. As for the government, to my knowledge most governments mandate that vpn providers keep logs of the traffic just like for the isp so it's not different.
- They claim a vpn allows you to bypass geo-restrictions and this is actually true but the service you are connecting to through the vpn can easily blacklist the vpn server's ip address so if this service really wanted to enforce geo-restrictions, a public vpn won't help.

Overall, vpns can be useful to bypass geo-restrictions and they are often useful to evade censorship and other restrictions some countries put but other than that, public vpns are a scam. Vpns are mainly useful for the task they were designed to do : Provide a way to connect people to private networks of corps in a secure and private way.

Some youtube channels have obscure anime that only appear if you're using a japanese VPN. I use chrome extension called Urban VPN. It's free and works fine for my needs. Sometimes I also use VPN on random websites that ban my IP for "too many requests" lol.

I also use a service called Real-Debrid. It's not really a VPN, but a very useful service for downloading torrent files directly from realdebrid servers. By doing this you're not sharing any files through torrent's peer-to-peer, since you're connected directly to realdebrid servers. You can also use realdebrid to download premium links from sites like rapidshare etc.

@deg yea, that’s what i use, and also proton vpn.
Proton vpn has an easier UI, but you can only connect to a few servers in Japan and USA servers unless you pay. It also bans illegal use.
Since i pretty much only use it to stream anime on a legal streaming in Japan, that’s a nonissue.

it's like 5 USD a month and I haven't really noticed any issues aside from the random slowdown or something.

When nyaa and other sites stopped working on my regular network whatever. I got myself VPN, and now those work again. Whenever a site stops working, just change location and you're good to go. Surprisingly good product.
Though when searching "down just for me or everybody else" for a website, they are always down. But change location on VPN and they work for some reason.

I used the VPN from McAffee a couple of years ago to watch Girls Und Panzer on Crunchy roll. Like really, companies complain a lot about piracy but then do as much as they can to hinder the user experience by locking shit up...

The experience was... meh, but is a McAffee product so it was expected. My father bought the anti virus and it was included, so why not use it? I wouldnt recommend it unless you (fore some weird reason) have a McAffee anti virus.

I also once (like 4-5 years ago) used an Open VPN (cant remember the name) to create a argentian blizzard account. It was ass: it took a lot to lead and it was really complicated to use/install, but ofc it was open, it was designed for people that knew what they were doing (not me or my brother)

I was using VPN to watch certatin anime, but I was using an american server. So I was having access to Yu Yu Hakusho, Initial D and some other series on Crunchyroll.

It wasn't free though, so I had to cancel it after some time and now I'm watching anime on some free websites, because the shows I want to watch are too specific and not available on Crunchyroll most of the time.

Nah! I don't use VPN and what's the point of playing the Korean Ragnarok Online server I don't speak that language?

I still plan on studying Korean though.

As for Netflix, that woke and creepy garbage can go straight to the garbage for besmirching Cowboy Bebop. Not gonna bother watching the new Gundam non-anime show coming on that craptastic streaming service.

Macross and Fafner are better than Gundam anyway. Especially after Witch From Mercury happened.

Netflix can't even hold the candle to 2005 cable TV with Anime On Demand. Not even HiDive could hold the candle.

Anime On Demand, TechTV and Encore Action are the reason I still love anime.

Tor is better and cheaper altogether, so I agree.

I don't see the point of using a VPN because it is not like it can actually hide your piracy downloads from the Feds. If the Feds are looking for you, not even Tor can hide you from them.

One day I'll probably switch from IPVanish to Mullvad, since cutting a ten dollar subscription to five dollars is quite tempting, along with going to a verifiably log free service. Don't know when, but eventually, as one day IPVanish might pull the same stunt on me that they did back in 2016, and produce logs from their "No-Logging" systems at the demand of Comcast. I do be doing the naughty on their VPN, after all.
