I tend to be very indecisive about my own scores. Haven't done this in a while (maybe a year), but I would go through my entire (very small) list and lower the scores of works I might like but don't consider... worthy(?) Of the first reactionary high score I gave it, I guess, and try to keep the list as balanced as possible.

Also, I've always been rather self conscious about stuff, so will admit sometimes I "play it safe" while scoring.

Basically I give things that don't matter too much thought. Trying to get better at that.

Don't worry man. My ratings are all over the place and I overrate and underrate things all the time because it's my opinion. Rate what ever you want. I mean it's your list right?

I also noticed that I tend to rate shows mostly within the 7-10 range, but I think that's mainly because I usually do a little research on an anime before I actually start watching it... Ultimately, I really only pick shows that I know I'd be into so it makes sense that my watchlist ratings are primarily within the satisfied range.

There isn't anything to feel here. I just want to say that I barely use 9s or 10s , I think it's fair this way and I do make some slight changes every now and then .I'm pretty satisfied with my ratings so far.

I have a personal struggle with grades, especially with things i like, like those anime categorized as "mid" but that really got to me, Horimiya and Wotaku I gave them an 8, but at least in the manga of Wotaku I gave it its deserved 9 for all the feelings it transmits to me, with the excuse that the manga has many more chapters.

Then there is JoJo. At least from part 5 on down, it doesn't give you "manual" character developments, there are quite a few unexplained things or plot elements that could be categorized as unprofessional, and overall there's little substance, at least that's what the expert critics say. But it's that JoJo even with all that is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen/read, and it's because of that "if you like it you have bad tastes" image that it was so hard for me to get enough courage to give a 10 to Diamond is Unbreakable, the adaptation of part 1 and 2, and Stone Ocean manga.

With the above two anecdotes, simply put, the social/elitist/critical side of the animanga community makes me feel like I have a gun behind me every time I rate an anime >.<

No one is going to personally come abuse you for your ratings lol. Everyone has some controversial ratings that don’t agree with the majority so unless you’re some celebrity, no one will care what you rate anime. Anime is just a hobby and how you experience an anime will be different to how I experience it so just relax and have fun whilst watching anime without all these made up pressures. Anime is supposed to be a good time ✌️

I think I'm being fair, as much as a subjective person like me can be. I haven't fallen in to the 7/10 hole, many others have, or at least not with both feet. But I have mellowed out, compared to several years ago.

I think my ratings are perfect, just rating them based on level of enjoyment which imo is the most important thing in anime. No way I am rating something that "looks beautiful", has a "good story" and other shit a 10 if it bored me to death

I'm good with mine. I also don't use the whole scale, just from 5 to 10. I used to be unsatisfied when I used a lot of 8s, but then I reorganized my list when I realized I liked some shows more than others that I listed under the same score.

Its a personal opinion, whether high or low, not an issue as long as it reflects your opinion.
I generally use the average rating to working out what to watch first and what to watch last.

I tend to skew more positively but I like to think my ratings are balanced and fair. With that said I don't put a tremendous amount of thought into them since there's no way a number can adequately reflect all my thoughts and feelings about something.

I used to use only 5-10 but it changed since I started watching seasonal anime. There is just too much really bad stuff where I can't accept myself giving it anything higher than a 4 or lower. Aside from that I just rate out of a guts feeling

As someone with a mean score of 7.99, I am satisfied. There are 2 very important reasons for my scores leaning so high:

1. I don't watch anime as my primary source of entertainment, so I carefully consider what I watch in the first place.
2. I don't score things that I don't complete. Many of my lower scores would be in my dropped category.

A bit high maybe? I should probably reflect on the show and then rate it, rather than rating it right as I finish. Sometimes I’ll look back on a show that I watched a while ago and wonder why the hell I rated it that high, but eh who cares. I enjoyed it at the time, so the rating remains unchanged

Sometimes i feel weird or guilty about rating things low that other people like, like Your Name.

My ratings do tend to be absurdly high, even a little bit of enjoyment gives a series at least a 7.

Don't worry about score it doesn't really matter. Considering you've only seen 62 anime, not having a balanced list is normal. I didn't use lower numbers for quite some time. The more you watch, the more you get a sense of what's good and bad (as well as your particular tastes), as well as a general sense of the number scale and how you want to use it. Your list will balance out on its own, especially if you go through it every now and then and re-organize it. I've seen 250 plus shows, and only recently have I really started to utilize the full spectrum of the number scale, let alone understand what each number represents to me (even still my list leans kind of hard toward the upper numbers). So don't worry about balancing it now. Also how you score anime is entirely up to you, so don't worry about what other people say.

My ratings are too high but at the same time I feel like a person's rating system for something like this isn't going to cohere until you have a LOT of entries. My Completed is only 179! I have no idea what I'm doing, really. I started making 10 a lot more exclusive, but I hand out 9's like candy. I need to go through and bump a few down, but the real issue is 7-5. I'm not too bothered yet by not using 1-4 pretty much, because I feel like I'm getting gradually more willing to watch crap.

anyway I don't think anyone with less than 300 or so completed entries should be too worried about their scores being too high - you don't know exactly what you like and dislike, and once you have enough entries you have comparison points you can use to define the scores.

I've lost track of how many people I've mislead into watching a series of which is currently a shambling corpse of what it was in the late 2000's.

...But what other options do I have?

When Dr. Stone aired, I gave it a 10. Now it sits at a 6 I think.
Because of the memes, I checked out Love is war and gave it a 7 in the beginning. In hindsight I enjoyed it so much, I just F slapped a 10 on it and I'm excited to see season 3 :P

If I raise my level of critique, most 10's will drop to 9 or even lower. Then again... who's gonna obtain the magical 10?

I have far more 8 / 9 & 10's in my list, then 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 & 5's. Cause the ones I check now that would get a low score, just get escorted to the drop list (often) with no score at all.
I don't know who quotes me and then deletes the comment, but know that you make my day.

I generally start at 7 when I liked it, but have no strong feelings about it. Afro Samurai is a good example of this - I liked it, but that's it. I don't know what else to say? So I default to 7.

From there, I add points based on how much I liked it, or subtract points if I had issues with it. I felt like Devilman Crybaby was fine, but it was tonally inconsistent. Thus, it got a 6. On the other hand, I thought Slayers was a lot of fun and it did a lot of 90s tropes very well. It gets an 8. The more positive or negative things I have to say about a series, the more I add/subtract.

It's the only way I can be as subjective as I tend to be while still maintaining some sort of consistency.

I don't really care much about my ratings anymore. I usually just rate things based on how much I enjoy them at the time instead of trying to think about what they actually deserve quality wise. Going with my gut. I just use ratings as a metric of my own tastes anyways, so I can compare affinities and stuff with other people.

One of the things I feel kinda iffy on are the shows I watched a long time ago and whether to change their ratings or not. My taste has changed over time and I know some of those old ratings are pretty busted lol.

My ratings are garbage, but I guess I don't care too much. It usually just depends on the way I felt when finishing the show/manga, which means the earliest ones I added have ridiculously high scores because my standards were extremely low and every lazy generic trope was new to me. Plus, I barely think about my other scores when I rate things so it's all an inconsistent mess. I'm sure there's a couple 8/10s that I enjoyed more than some of my 10/10s. Basically, my scores are a terrible representation of what I think about a given work right now, they're all what I felt like when I first went through them or, for the stuff I saw before making my account, what I vaguely remembered feeling like when watching them.

Just rate to however your heart desires. If you genuinely enjoy these anime as much as you rate them, then that's actually great.

For us with lower mean scores, it usually just means that we lower our standard figure usually to around 5 as what it probably should be, as opposed to 7 as is otherwise usually the case. This way we better utilize the lower scores while also giving more breathing room to the higher scores. So like a 5 for me might be a 7 for someone else, even though we both equally enjoy it the same.
