So, I know it's not an anime per say, but the Kingdom Hearts fandom was very much like this, and you can still see a lot of the remains of this sort of mentality, even today.
A lot of people, back in the day, hated Xion.
Not because they didn't like her character, not because they didn't like her design, not because they didn't like her personality.
They didn't like her because she got in the way of Axel and Roxas being shipped together. I shit you not. I saw girls say that as the excuse all the time, same with Kairi getting in the way of Sora and Riku.
And that remnant of that mentality is still in the fandom on occasion, but only with Kairi. (Hate with Xion over shipping bullshit has gone down drastically.)
People hate Kairi quite a bit, and while I don't blame them because Nomura and his writing team treat her like side trash, a lot of people will just come out right and say that they don't like her just because Sora's probably going to be shipped with her, and not Riku.
I was never like this, thank God, but I can guess for maybe a few reasons as to why it's like this?
1) They've imparted themselves onto a certain character, meaning that they see themselves as one of the people in the ship so that they can be shipped with their favorite character secondhandedly (which is what I'm pretty sure is the number one top reason tbh and no one wants to admit it).
2) They would rather see gay romance over straight, which I get, yay representation (and I am gay here, I should point that out), but your favorite character could be bisexual for all you know unless otherwise stated-- chill.
3) They care sooooo much for a character that they feel like a mother-- they want what's best for their comfort character-- and that means being put with who they deem the "right" character. "Yes, why should Roxas be with Xion? Axel took care of Roxas, and they've known each other longer, and Axel cared for Roxas a lot a lot. That means that they should be together."
Sorry for blabbing for ten hours, but over the course of being in fandoms that are constantly like this, and watching the height of it occur, I have a few ideas as to why I can answer your question. |
