Have you ever felt peer-pressured into giving an anime a higher/lower score?

Might seem a little weird or stupid, considering it's your list, you score everything according to you.
That being said there were times when I wanted to rate something low, but felt bad coz everyone (including close friends) were like 'IT CHANGED MY LIFE' and blah blah. One example for me is Koe no Katachi, everyone, especially the friend who recommended it, seems to love that movie and I still feel emotionally dead inside for only rating it a 6/10 - I just couldn't connect with the characters that much.

Anyone else felt like this?

No. If someone actually used their relationship with me as leverage to change my mind about a freakin anime, then they can kiss that relationship goodbye. I have no use nor appreciation for pathetic individuals such as this.

If they simply think differently about a show, that's whatever. In this case, they aren't putting any pressure on me whatsoever.
There's no inherent right or wrong in this universe, but when we think with emotions rather than logic, we make things so.

I was in this position for Your Name. I gave it a 4/10 before I saw all the reviews, saying that it was a movie that got them teary eyed. Dunno why but I put the rating at an 8. But soon did I realize that me giving an 8 for Your Name was not of my personal opinion so I went back and rated it a 2/10.

I gave Re:Zero a 5 because I couldn’t bring myself to giving it a 4 for some odd reason but looking back now I think I’m going to drop the score after all

i've had kinda gotten peer pressure into giving howl's moving castle a 9 compared to the 8 i've given it. Also Gokushufudou with people telling me how bad it is but I found it pretty good.

Has a 8.60 mean score

I have no mercy for high rated shows I don't like but, unconsciously, this is something that might be applied more often than it seems.

I lowered Promare from 10 to 9, because I felt that having watched it in a theatre enhanced the experience to the point that it wouldn't be as good on a small screen at home.

Would I have kept it at 10, if Promare were rated above 9.00? I don't think so, but I can't be 100% sure about something that works unconsciously. Will I raise it back to 10, if it will prove to be just as good after a rewatch? Absolutely.

Berserk i was so depressed if i should give it a 10 or a 9 and finally i decided to give it a 9 because there's still no conclusion everything i read was all just buildup because of hiatus and there's no chapter left give it 9 for not having any conclusion.....

Not directly, but I used to rate things based on some sort of hypothetical "how much would I recommend it to a general audience".

I realized that this basically meant trying to shift my ratings toward what I think would be most acceptable, even if not based on the usual anime fandom standards, so I stopped doing it.

Yes,I didn't wanted to give Fmab a 9 or 10 but I still gave it 9 cause it was just so much praised I couldn't bring myself giving it lower than that and I wanted to give fmab low score because I actually didn't enjoyed it that much maybe i was expecting too much or maybe cause I didn't liked mc,I mostly gives 10 or 9 to animes which I enjoyed the most and the ones which I just wanted to watch it's next episode asap and in fmab I many times didn't felt watching it and binging it and I only liked 3 things 1st opening,Elric Alphonse and Hughes,Maybe in future I'll change the rating to 8

When I feel pressured into giving an anime a higher score I usually end up ratting it lower, My mind doesn't work well with high expectations

Sometimes yeah. Let's Take Re:Zero. People consider it to be peak fiction and the greatest thing that the world has ever seen but man I can't give it a higher score than 8. Some people have come to my comments to say something like "Re:Zero is better than any of your tens" Like I don't go to someones profile to say stuff like that. I still think it is pretty Basic. It tries to be deep but it is not. The characters feel lackluster at times. Like you might like it but it is not the greatest thing ever. I probably wouldn't have watched season 2 if I didn't watch season 1 when I did. Like I don't think I could watch season 1 of Re:Zero again. It has exactly 0 rewatch value

Actually I've felt that as well a few times. I've found it's much better to just ignore what everyone says, and then agree or disagree with them afterwards, then you can rate more honestly

Not really, I mean I have felt like underrating a good anime and vice versa. Feeling bad later for doing it. One example is "Shouwa Genroku". I underrated it and felt horrible. A year or two passed and I decided to change it's score, since I didn't want to feel horrible anymore.

I have definitely felt that way and gotten in trouble with some for giving their fav shows a low score (6 or below), with them being convinced I only do it to harm them because everyone else watching it did give it a high score (8 and up)

I only caved 2 or 3 times, and that was at the very beginning when I was relatively new to mal before learning that sticking to my own views is better for me in the long run. It's MYanimelist, not THEIRanimelist

I used to give certain shows high scores just because they were highly praised and I'm supposed to like it but now I don't care. I just can't be convinced to raise or lower things if I don't feel honest about it.

I know that most people will say no but this influence exist 100%. Shows like Barakamon or Mushishi are not being talked about nearly enough given how good their numbers are on most anime listing sites. This tells me that a lot of people just give a good rating merely because it looks respectable and other people are doing it, not because they were invested in the story, else there'd be more discussion. If you don't think this exists you're lying to yourself.

P.S I have nothing against either title. Mushishi is one of my favourite anime and Barakamon is pretty alright. I'm just making an observation.

I've never felt pressured. Having said that though I always wonder if I (and everyone to a degree) am subconsciously influenced by other people's scores. Like if I watch something and don't think it's very good am I more likely to notice it's good points if I know it's very highly regarded by most others and then score it a little higher than I otherwise would have done?

I guess unless some researchers do a serious scientific study on such things we'll never know.
The criteria I use when rating shows is on my profile.

Nah, my scores reflect what I honestly thought about the stuff I watched/read.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

It honestly depends. For most of the times, it's my opinion, so I'll rate it with what I want to rate it.
For Afro Samurai. I really like Afro Samurai even though it has a really low rating, I thought It was pretty good and gave it a nine.

No, not really. I score however I want. Why will I care about others' opinion? You shouldn't care either.

Now refuting everything I said before, WHY TF DID YOU GIVE KOE NO KATACHI A 6??? IT'S AT LEAST A 10000/10, YOU PIECE OF SH*T!! (Just kidding, just because KnK resonated so deeply with me definitely doesn't mean you will have to like it too)

Kinda of? Like if I see people complaining about/praising an anime a lot I may go back and look at my score and question if the score I gave it was accurate. Usually I leave the score as it is, other times I may feel like I was too lenient or even too harsh in my scoring.

It's not like I feel the pressure to rate it more comparably to other people, it just makes me go back and question my own reasoning. It doesn't usually amount to anything but sometimes I may find that I disliked the anime more than that 6 I gave it, or liked it more than a 5.

It happens to me quite a lot, but that's because I have a lot of 7/10 anime. And usually when I compare many 7/10 to 9/10 anime, it can be pressuring if I could give a certain anime a higher or a lower grade.

But I'm the one pressuring myself so wtf. I've not seen friends of mine giving me this pressure, so yeah it's all me.

Nope, not even once, it is ‘my’ anime list after all :). I score based on what i enjoy, could not care less what other people’s scores are, or whether most people love or hate it, we all have different tastes.
From all the times and things in life to feel peer-pressured about, this should not be it! ;)

Strangely I felt KnK to be too relatable in a strange sense. Like usually I watch anime for the usual escapism reasons, and KnK to me was 'huh, just another day in high school.' Like this sort of thing didn't happen to me directly, but the situation of our school meant I had a lot of friends who experienced the same thing the MCs in the movie did. I guess I didn't want to be reminded?

omg im so sorry you felt that way, it's just my opinion.
im honestly sorry.
as for koe no katachi, there were so many things i didn't agree with:
i) the fact that Nishimiya has a personality of a bread, they didn't give her anything as a personality trait except for the fact that she was deaf. if i were a deaf person, I'd honestly be disappointed by it.
ii) the way mental illness is portrayed in this. when Ishida's mom found out about how Ishida was planning to commit suicide, she didn't try to help him through it or find reasons as to why he felt this way, instead she started making it about herself, saying "how could you do this to me?" this reaction would only make him feel more pathetic. he blames himself enough for her to add up to it. i think it's common knowledge that when someone is suicidal, you don't blame them furthermore and make it about yourself.
iii) none of the characters have depth except Ishida. as in if they wanted to show someone as bad (Ueno), they made it obvious that you have to dislike them, it felt forced.

Makes sense, actually. There are some anime that I have refrained from watching since I think they would "hit too deep", if you get what I mean. That doesn't mean I'll never watch them though. I'll eventually get around to them.
