As far as I know, most people who dislike the movie, dislike the protagonist and his actions.

Probably Tales From Earthsea, I only watched it once back when it was younger, but I hated it.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

I see lots of hate being thrown at Grave of the Fireflies, which I find unusual because that's the one I consider the most masterfully directed and emotionally compelling. But to each to their own, I guess. I think the worst is probably Tales from Earthsea, but I have not seen Earwig and the Witch (and never will).

I won't call it the worst but I had a bad experience watching it... Castle in the Sky (only seen about 7 of them)

Since I was watching it in Sub but sometimes the subtitle didn't work and the dub didn't match the main guy... considering I watched the sub first... I usually don't mind Ghibli in either version but the dub for this one wasn't good... so ruined my joy for this movie.

I largely limit myself to Hayao's movies. Totoro is the worst one I've seen. I haven't seen Earthsea or Grave of the Fireflies, and I'm pretty sure I'd hate both.

Something tells me I wouldn't like Earwig either, even though it and Howl are by the same creator.

Wow there are some pretty terrible opinions here.

I get it, there was a time where I myself didn't enjoy Ghibli movies at all, but c'mon, even if you couldn't appreciate some aspects of the movies, the sheer quality of cinematography, theming and art/animation quality just shields these from being considered even remotely mediocre.

Not the worst Ghibli movie ever imo, but I think that Arriety was okay. I don't like quite as much as Kiki's Delivery Service or older works.

Still, I prefer Ghibli movie XYZ to Summer Wars. Summer Wars ain't worthy of the hype it got.

The worst movie is by far Grave of the Fireflies, because of his inconsicently written and incredibly stupid main charakter who single-handedly ruins everything the movie is trying to tell.

Have not yet watched all. A few of them are left to watch like graves of fire flies, cat returns, wind rises and porco rosso

Out of all I have watched, Kiki's delivery service was most weakest for me (both underdogs ged seki and aya to majo were better for me compared to this)

Everything directed by Gorou Miyazaki....

Especially Earthsea. And yeah I saw the new movie.... personal opinion, Earwig was actually his best... it just needs a proper ending...

I feel bad for Gorou tho... imagine being Miyazaki’s son and not being that talented.... :(

Ocean waves. I've watched it 4 times and still dislike it. The main girl is just such a POS and the main guy is so stupid. I'm always mad after I watch it. At least the art style is nice to look at. The music is stuck in my head for all eternity.

Earthsea is boredom in a movie format, it doesn't help that the world isn't interesting either. it's weirdly paced. bleh

From up on Poppy Hill, I don't remember anything except the weird incest story. ew

Earwig and the witch, it had the potential to be a good movie. When you think the story is beginning to be good, it abruptly ends. I hate when it does that. It felt like I was stuck in that first episode of Majo no tabitabi when Elaina learns with her tutor for a WHOLE HOUR. it was repetitive and I wanted to get out of this god damn house.

Tonari no yamada-kun, honestly I don't really care for this one.

I...think you may have missed what the movie was going for.

Seita is meant to represent the Japanese zeitgeist of the time--he's proud, stubborn, and makes pointless sacrifices because he believes that's just what you have to do. And then as the war rages on, he makes more and more morally-questionable decisions (like, y'know, looting during an air raid) that betray his own beliefs and values. Just like Japan itself.

Of course Seita's decisions were shit--they're supposed to be. The point of the movie is that Seita refused to swallow his pride and live with his overbearing aunt, and that path eventually led to his downfall--just like Japan's pride in WW2 caused it to refuse any and all common sense or decency and pressed forward with an imperialist campaign that became its downfall.

In this context, Setsuko represents all that is good and beautiful about traditional Japanese culture. You get no prizes for correctly guessing what her death represents.

Grave of the Fireflies is a movie about how abandoning logic and humility for the sake of stubborn national pride has led to the death of the very things Seita (and Japan) sought to protect, instead bringing about their own downfall.

(And then there's also the subtext at the end that Japan's increasing industrialism and commercialism in the late 80s is allegedly dooming them to repeat this mistake, which is just a bad take on Takahata's part.)

I'm a big fan-boy of Isao Takahata, who made fewer and more mature movies than Hayao Miyazaki. Takahata was more interested in social issues, and supported the communist party. Miyazaki too was a lefty, but more of the green and hippie variant and more interested in stories for all ages.

Given how different Takahata and Miyazaki are, my best offer is a top 3+3=6 ranking, with Takahata bias. Interestingly Miyazaki still takes the #1 spot, not the least because Mononoke-hime is one of his few adult audience movies.
  1. Princess Mononoke (Miyazaki, 1997)
  2. Grave of the Fireflies (Takahata, 1988)
  3. Only Yesterday (Takahata, 1991)
  4. My Neighbor Totoro (Miyazaki, 1988)
  5. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (Takahata, 2013)
  6. Spirited Away (Miyazaki, 2001)

I've been told it's "the saddest" but it's pointless and not half as touching as people make it out to be.

It's more poignant when you're aware it's actually an autobiographical story / based on the real experience of the writer. The girl in the movie is the writer's real life sister, and it's relating real experiences people had at that time. That is the point.

However possibly the fucking dumbest actual complaints I've ever heard about the movie are
