What is a tone shift in anime that you didn't see coming?

It's hard to win an argument against smart people, but impossible to win an argument against dumb ones.

Death Parade
First episode
When 2 people enter a bar, and then end up playing a deadly game of darts.
And the OP is a funky groovy banger.

Steins;Gate
after a bunch of episodes just fucking around with time.

Goblin Slayer probably. It started of very dark and grim, then immediately after episode 1 it turns into a light-hearted fanservice heavy SoL with some action.

bruh can u say what spoiler ur talking abt so that legit every single person doesn't fight the urge to click?

Also, Gintama right around episode 300 shifts into something completely different from the vibe before (although there were little pockets of adrenaline b4 that point)

I do agree that GS became just another mediocre isekai after the controversial first EP but fanservice? Was there any to begin with?

I mean, there's an entire character that is called "Cow Girl" and is literally just big tits. After the dark start of episode 1, this is what we're greeted with in episode 2:

Steins;gate. I did not expect it to be as depressing as it was. I didn't understand why it was ranked number 2nd on MAL up until this point.

Talentless nana. I was gonna drop it because the 1st episode seemed as typical shounen as possible. Then nana threw our "mc" off a cliff.

Re:Zero. It actually had 2 tone shifts. The first one changed it from a typical fantasy SOL to a horror. The second one(season 2) changed it to a mystery.
I gave up on character of the week since it takes too much thinking. I'll just change my forum pfp to whoever I want every week lol.

They said it several times, but still steins; gate, it's incredible its plot twists that make it darker as it progresses, it really surprised me.

deca-dence changed completely after the first episode and became incredible.

Didn't see majo no tabitabi episode 3 coming, it got really screwed up and creepy.

and munou na nana, the plot twist at the end of chapter 1 wasn't really coming to me, it improved a lot.

I guess the Hunter x Hunter Chimera Ant arc. Hunter x Hunter has always been a bit darker than it's immediate contemporaries like the Big 3, but it always felt like it was more undertones than anything. The Chimera Ant arc immediately showed you it's big, dark ass dick when it started. There was no undertones there, it was upfront with it's dark tone, and it took me a bit to acclimate.

I mean think about the arc that happened right before it

Gakkou Gurashi and Zombieland Saga are the first ones to come to my head (ironically both zombie anime). Kotoura-san started out depressing as hell and ended up being a generic ecchi romcom, which was depressing as hell (so i guess it was still depressing in the end). The entire 3rd season of The world God only Knows was a pretty drastic tone shift from the first 2 seasons as well.

Honestly, Attack on Titan. I really expected it to be very black-and-white; human = good, titan = bad. Pleasantly surprised by how wrong I was.

You mean intentional or unintentional?

The only one I can think of is when the chaos cultists are handily defeating the Adeptus Arbites of some backwater and the planet is in serious dange rof falling to degeneracy and chaos. Then, at that moment, on the cusp of defeat the prayers of the faithful to the
God Emperor are heard and Primarch Lord Vader and Admiral Tarkin show up to use a surgical exterminatus on the traitors. Then Lord Vader single handedly leads a boarding action against the chaos cruiser and massacres the heretics. I was enraptured.

Shigatsu was too much for me, I dropped it at that point and pretended that it ended there because I got attached to the characters way too much. Doesn't help that it was my first romance anime and somewhere around 3-4th anime I've ever seen.

Easily AOT. I thought it was gonna be some dumb mindless action series with a whiny ass MC. Lol Boy was I wrong. The Basement reveal just blew my mind and S4 like holy shit an all out war where you don't even know who to root for like Isayama is a genius!

Dusk maiden of amnesia. Thought it was gonna be a rom-com with supernatural elements, turned out to be a pretty good horror anime after a few episodes.
School-Live got me as well.

Alps no Shoujo Heidi. The first few episodes were very "anime for kids" type of show, so I didn't expect it to become so dramatic around episode 18.

Defitely Madoka magica. I started it as a joke . Didn't knew it would become my favorite

Also evangelion.now Evangelions Tone might have been obvious but I started reading the manga when I was a child because my older sister had them. And I assumed that anything drawn = for children= for me .

Boy was I wrong.
The Eva-03 fight was unexpected and way darker in the manga

I love how looking back on AoT it was always about war and how people picture their enemys as non-human-monsters.

It's really just a good action horror at first. And then the mysteries start piling up.

It's soooo good <3

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle has a tone shift that I didnt see coming. It was light-hearted adventure isekai anime with nearly no blood that turned into a dark, violent, gory, sad and depressing adventure isekai anime. The tone shift in the opening alone was something that surprised me.

I've seen quite a few series that seem confused as to what tone they want to have. A comic relief character in otherwise serious show. A comedy having random serious moments. And so on.

When I recently started Dead Mount Death Play, absolutely nothing indicated it would have some lets say less than serious moments. I'm not really bothered by it so far, but it was unexpected given how it started.

The best example of a well done complete tonal shift for me is still Vinland Saga. Having no prior knowledge of the source material, that blindsided me in the best possible way.

The overly cautious hero.

The plot twist is absolute genius and just devastate you. You were watching a fun and happy anime to suddenly fall into a dark fantasy.

There's probably one somewhere, but I don't get caught off guard much. Even in Steins;Gate and Magica Madoka, the writing was on the wall. You can tell by the build up, the stagnation, the way the scenes accent certain things, that either something was going to happen or the shows were going to be shit. And you can tell by the opening choices and sequences that it wasn't going to just be an easy ride.

I remember there was one show that sort of caught me off guard, but I forgot what it was.

For attack on Titan I expected it to be another teenage dystopian that was really popular at the time with predictable loud MC and stuff. Tbh I didn’t expect it to get rlly war-based and “philosophical” (like commentary on racism and prejudice) or that the main character would turn out so evil.

Steins;gate is an obvious one.

For made in abyss I expected it cause I knew it was going to get dark, but I was expecting more of a coraline style horror thing, I never expected it's brutality and nightmarish agony that it puts on it's characters in, which results in moments that can make me cry like a bitch.

Some more examples are Megalo box nomad in comparison to season 1, Akudama drive's first half vs most of the second half, Date a live a show about dating the power of magical bomb creating girls out of them, that had the operations function like a dating sim with people in their 40s voting on the options in a operation ran by the mc's loli sister, and had low form fanservice.... to become a story with a genuinely serious plot that actually has some really well written moments and segments.

Kaguya Sama Love is War OVA

The amount of ecchi that was shoved in our face from a show that had little to no fan service in it, caught me more off guard than anything else listed here, lol. That single OVA would put hardcore ecchi shows to shame with the amount of boob jiggle physics that was present in it. I never expected to see those characters presented that way. I would have sworn I was on Pixiv looking at highly sexualized fan art (not that that's something I do in my spare time >_>)

I didn't expect the second season of "Megalo Box" to get as serious/heart-wrenching (and good) as it did.
