I recently finished Aoi Bungaku, and I have to say that as someone who thought that Berserk (1997) was a dark anime, Aoi Bungaku, at least the first half seems to take the cake for me in that regard. It may seem like I'm exaggerating, but some of the stories in the first half are just really messed up, at least from my perspective, and nearly left me unhinged after watching. FMA 2003 is also candidate, as it is the darkest shounen that I've watched; it's tone is much darker than that of Brotherhood, and some really messed up things do happen in it as well.
"I saw the Emperor - this soul of the world - go out from the city to survey his reign; it is a truly wonderful sensation to see such an individual, who, concentrating on one point while seated on a horse, stretches over the world and dominates it."

Elfen Lied, The Promised Neverland, Berserk (both old and new) and AoT, Made in Abyss.

The difference between them is tough to rank. But probably darkest Elfen Lied > Berserk > AoT> Made in Abyss > TPN

I haven’t watched much of those but I believe its Ellen Lied. It didn’t help making the anime any more special though.

There is many kinds of darknes and comparing them is hard. As a realistic story Grave of the fireflies is really dark. In other hand Devilman:crybaby got really deep in my mind by structurally resemling some horrifying fever dreams I had as a kid.

Not an anime, but qtμt (Cutie Mutie) is my pick. I haven't seen the infamous Berserk but this manga is scarring and absolutely creepy.

Gantz, especially manga was fucked up. Worst series if you get attached to characters or ship them.

Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.
Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime.

Texhnolyze. This show is the absolute peak of depression. Nothing good ever happens in it. It's a story of suffering, pain, and misery. It's certainly not for everyone

Probably Hoshiai no Sora. It's not like SnK, where lots of characters die. It's actually a sports anime, and just like most sports anime, it has a lot of character drama. However, it explored stuff I never thought I'd see in a kids' anime. By the way, it wasn't anything sexual; it's still family friendly, but I was just surprised. I really love that anime! lol.

Great anime. And definitely one of the darkest I've watched.

Casshern Sins is also rather dark. It has quite a depressing touch to it.

Tokyo Ghoul, the screen was too dark because of all the censorship

Shiki would probably be the winner for me.

I don't think i watch that many dark anime.. so I'm sure some people will laugh at my choice on this (lol). Anyway..
I think for me there are few, like TPN Made in Abyss, and AoT. But i think TPN only dark for the first half, and i only watched Made in Abyss 1st season (which although dark, it's not too dark yet). So i leave this one to AoT.

I'm starting to get embarrassed by my own forum signature line.. XD

Texhnolyze, and it's not even close.
TEN COMMANDMENTS:
1) If Evangelion and Psycho-Pass are his only 10s, he probably also worships Tool and smells like cheesy puffs 2) Freudian psychosis =/= good writing 3) Moe blob art style is only ok in pure slice-of-life comedy 4) It's ok to enjoy shounen. Having fun is allowed 5) It is not ok to enjoy isekai (jk, it is, I just fucking hate it) 6) Creator breakdown =/= good writing 7) A story does not have to be wrapped up with a bow. Life is messy, why would a good story need to be tidy? 8) InuYasha is proto-Twilight 9) Ecchi CAN be good, but is almost always an abomination 10) If God is real, They allowed Super Kid to happen, so fuck Them

As someone who actively avoids "dark" anime (it's just not for me), I think you'll probably laugh at how tame my answer is but it's probably Fate/Zero. For most people, it's not very dark compared to some of the stuff out there but it's dark enough for me. That introduction scene with Caster still haunts me.

The only other one that kinda comes to mind is Cat Soup. I'm not sure if "dark" is the right word though but it was definitely disturbing. Also the Sodachi Lost arc from Owarimonogatari was pretty messed up when you think about it.

Texhnoylze is definitely on the tame side.

Hard to think of the darkest anime I've seen. Probably something like Genocyber

Also, I'm glad I found this thread. Thanks for reminding me to finish the series.

I have to say Hunter x Hunter, mainly the Chimera ant arc, its not outright as dark as some other anime mentioned here, but i am 100% sure that thematically its one of the darkest anime every created (again mainly Chimera Ant arc).

I see that you are a man of culture. I think the same.

Texhnolyze is also pretty dark, but I don't think that is as dark as this one. Aoi Bungaku is also a great choice.

People saying that Promised Neverland is "dark" should leave the "lobby", lol.

I dropped it halfway through, but I'd say Texhnolyze: literally (every scene the color palettes are dark) and figuratively: nothing positive happens in this show. Yes, Berserk is far more graphic and intense, but it has its light hearted moments.

The storyline and premise of Shinsekai yori are so dark, but the ending is just on another level. Dark fantasy usually isn’t even that dark, but Shinsekai yori shows how depressing and abysmal it can really get.

I know about it....It's "depression in a cyberpunk dystopia-The Anime" with Ichise on the leading role.

I want season 2 with Ram being reincarnated in the Haibane Renmei universe in order to find peace and salvation.>_<
