Why so many strong female characters in anime?

It seems at odds with what I've read about Japanese society which seems to be quite conservative and where, I'm told, women find it difficult to get top positions in the workplace. Are there any theories why women are so often the strong character or heroine in anime?

It is pretty ironic how women in anime have such huge presence and most of them can be strong, independent and badass but women in real-life Japan are treated quite the opposite for whatever reason. The only reason I can think of is Japan is still dominated mostly by men in the business world and they still uphold that sexist belief.

Edit: Also, you notice how most anime girls (notably the girls in hentai) are submissive as fuck? I'm guessing that's how men in Japan expect women to act like. Most of the girls I know are assertive and so, I cringe a little when anime/hentai girls can't speak or stand up for themselves and they just let the guy do whatever the hell they want with them.

Well some have strong will power and some have strong body figure.

There are just a lot of females in anime in general (kind of a dumb statement), so it just seems like there are many strong female characters. Honestly, you can ask the same question about weak female characters too and have a valid point.

I think strong female characters just leave bigger impressions and are therefore more popular. Japanese culture aside, it’s just how it seems to work psychologically.

how are they strong doe? most female characters suck ass so hard that they can be hardly called characters. their personality only consists of the most generic 'strong attractive feminine straight woman' traits. or maybe just 'attractive feminine straight woman' traits, bc swinging sword (not better than a man of course) in a dress hardly makes them 'strong' characters.
i aint saying femininity is bad, but theres so many other, interesting ways to write women. give them fucking abs at least.

and yeah, fujikos a good example, bc she actually has personality besides also being the archetype i mentioned above

I think...

1. They aware of those and trying to "encourage" woman to be like that and break that stigma (is this a right word ?), although sadly yes like someone said above they still portrait them as submissive so it's kinda wasted that led to the 2nd points below

2. They only made those for drawing "market target" who have that "kind" of fetish

If we look at how is japanese weeb rn (atleast from their behaviour in vtuber world), i think points 1 is almost impossible to do

I guess it appeals to a more Western culture. Not many Western women would probably like anime if it constantly placed them in a submissive role or the role of the damsel-in-distress.

There are fan edits of popular movies by misogynists where they alter or remove any content that violates their ideal of women being subordinate to men. I have to wonder if these guys do the same to anime, or if they have discussions over which anime they consider "good" and "bad" according to their twisted ideal of gender roles.

Japan is a pretty sexist country, but it doesn't necessarily say that women are weak and submissive the way Western sexism has often told. Rather that they have to be... virtuous, in the way defined by the strict gender roles. That may include having a strong personality when it's "needed".

On the other hand, about anime... you guys are treating it as some sort of mirror of the Japanese society and culture, when like any other artistic or narrative medium it is a construction, and a construction often created to escape, form an alternative or counter the cultural norm. I think the magical girl archetype for instance was considered countercultural at the time it was created.

Simply having physically powerful female characters isn't feminist in and of itself. They need to feel like a person in their own right as well, else it's just lip service. And in many action anime I see that it doesn't necessarily hold up to that standard.

Possibly because there's precedent for them in Japanese history.

You also gotta keep in mind that a lot of mangaka are women, even for works aimed at men.

And as mentioned previously, a lot of guys well...

And also "Strong female character" doesn't just mean "chick that fights", but a character that is well-written and memorable in addition to being capable. Like any medium, there are anime characters that are strong female characters and "strong female characters".

I think there's nothing wrong with a strong female character, but it'd be annoying if it gets to the point that they make men be nothing and women be everyithing, I don't know if I'm explaining myself. I would not like an anime that makes women too much, as well as I wouldn't like an anime that makes men too much. I don't have any problem with a character being very strong if it doesn't damage the story or the enjoyability.

There are certainly more heroines and strong women in anime than in other media imo, but I still think they are kinda underrepresented overall. I usually enjoy watching a show more if there is some diversity in gender, especially when it comes to the main cast. Unfortunately especially shounen anime suffer from too many strong male characters for obvious reasons.

Yes, we need more women main characters that make tea at the office. Joking. Audiences love strong main characters, doesn't matter the sex.

Not really, but I don't get why one would since you can have a character that is both a skilled fighter and is a well-written and three dimensional character at the same time. This applies to both male and female characters.

I've seen my fair share of both weak and strong female characters (physically or mentally). And i say... I prefer the strong one so.. i don't have a problem with that. XD
And i saw a lot of people in some discussion thread also say they rather dislike weak ones. I guess that can be the cause..? XD

Well i don't think there's that many. I think most female characters are pretty weak. There is a few real badass women in anime. So we need more.

Or maybe I didn't see the "right" animes.

But anyway to answer the question, even though Japanese society is pretty conservative, that doesn't mean there aren't people who try to be modern, or even if they really aren't, they try to be in their work, maybe to make it sell better, maybe to make themselves look better or for other reasons. Also if it's a female author, chances are high she'll have strong female characters.
I don't really know how conservative people think, but maybe they can fully differentiate their real-life views from their work. Maybe they really only make badass females because they are hot. Who knows?

Waifu potential. Also, the MC -normally a man- needs to make a progression, so there's a need for strong character to serve as a master or to compare the power level itself:

Erza, Yoruichi, Sango, Asuna, Akame, Revy, Rem, Kohaku... And a huuuuge etc.

Its quite funny since shounen male writers tend to make their female characters powerful and dominant but shoujo female authors prefer the shy and submissive type of girl to be the protagonist

I think shounens need powerful females because they cant really imgine a world where females have no important role since everything is based on power in shounen worlds

I love how quick Westerners are to call Japan sexist. Japanese women by and large have rejected feminist ideology. Nekopara, the anime and visual novel constantly held up by Western feminists as an example of how sexist Japan and anime is was made by a woman who explicitly sexualized the cute, feminine innocence of catgirls in the visual novel.

Anyway though, I don't really see that many animes with "strong female characters." I think they only really exist in shonen animes and I don't watch very much shonen. Romance, SOL, ecchi, and even the psychological/thriller/horror genres are usually cutesy and vulnerable.

Because anime doesn't give a shit about gender politics

Step 1: make a good character
Step 2: pick a gender

I wonder why this seems to be such a difficult task in a certain other industry πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Fiction is not necessary to depict reality, sometimes author want to depict their idealism in their work. Strong women and better world are examples of this idealism/dream.
