That's like asking why do we have drama anime. It's fine if you like character relations and the like to be more lighthearted, but it's also fine fro anime to explore some of the... deeper implications of a given situation. Like on one side you have shonen anime like One Piece, about brutal, ruthless pirates fighting for various reasons with all kinds of earth-splitting supernatural powers; barely anyone dies. On the other you have stuff like Akame ga Kill.
We should have MORE gore anime.

I don't think the R rating means much. Death Note also got an R rating but there's really only one scene that has any blood in it. That one scene has a lot, but overall Death Note is a fairly tame show. The violence in Death Note feels much more PG-13 to me than R-rated. The violence in Code Geass and Kingdom is pretty comparable to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings in terms of having a high body count but no gore and fairly small amounts of blood but it gets an R rating here on MAL.

You may find the IMDB "parents guide" section to be useful. On IMDB, if you scroll down and look directly above where you see the words "Did You Know" you will see "Parents Guide: View Content Advisory." Click on that, and there's usually a description you can see for yourself and decide whether you are able to handle whatever content is in it.

I admittedly actually use it for the opposite reason sometimes to see if an ecchi show I'm considering is sexy enough to be worth watching 😂

To answer OP, I don't think there's really that many animes being released nowadays that are really gorey and brutal. Anime in the 1980s and 1990s had a lot more of that. The only fairly recent examples I can think of are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan. Those do happen to be very popular animes, but generally most animes contain either no violence at all due to being a slice of life show or contain fairly mild levels of it such as in action oriented shonens and isekais.

But animes like Hellsing and Elfen Lied are actually pretty rare when you consider the amount of anime being produced every year.

I think rating of anime is quite subjective and depends of the platform.. For example, MAL rates Attack on Titan and Death Note as R/for 17yo and +, while Netflix rates these as 13+ LMAO (well at least on the French Netflix, idk if it's the same everywhere). So yeah, I don't really trust any age rating because it's never the same <.<

And concerning Attack On Titan and Tokyo Ghoul, I think the gore is "useful" to the story because it makes the anime more realist and dark. The impact on watchers would not be the same without this violence, imo!!

Yeah I'd say Death Note is definitely PG-13 material. I'm surprised they'd rate AOT as PG-13 though.

MAL ratings tend to be pretty harsh on violence. I kind of wonder how they choose the ratings in the first place.

I wasn't criticizing AOT for being violent. AOT is definitely not Hellsing Ultimate and just being violent for the sake of being violent. AOT has a pretty dark concept so it makes sense.

Sometimes I am just in a mood to watch someone explode. I don't know what that says about me, but I'm glad there is people who make what I want to see.

Gore and brutality is frowned upon by Japanese audiences outside of seinen manga and novels (and even moreso frowned upon in hentai). People don't like their favorite characters dying brutally anymore.

mainly because it’s fiction, it’s something we don’t see much in real life (hopefully). as someone who likes gorey stuff, i can say we find it entertaining and fascinating. it’s terrible, but also interesting. fiction should be able to explore dark and disgusting things (as long as it’s not glorifying it). it’s alright if that’s not for you, you’re not the only one and many people can’t handle stuff like that. but there’s also a lot that can and are interested in seeing that stuff.

If you go to Japan, it really isn't. Cute is everywhere. Even on medicine products for adults, the mascots are ridiculously cute.

China has cute mascots too.

Asia likes cute things.

Why are there Cute girls doing cute things animes? Why are there gore/war/scary movies?

It's all the same, maybe you don't like it, but someone else does.

Honestly I think it's bad that I find more excitement from watching people dying in extreme car crashes than from watching people have sex

My biggest regret: Reading all 200+ chapters of Kanojo, Okarishimasu

There's people for everything. I personally don't get the appeal, but I also don't like the horror genre altogether. Different personalities.

Because fun things are fun. Overall though anime lacks any extreme violent content especially these days and Japanese live action movies and even porn have more titles acknowledged for their brutality.

What about Jojo's? Part 3 really squicked me and I hear it gets WAY WAY worse. x___x (I'm scared lol)

Sorry for the late reply, but anyway! I don't know girl. I'm not really into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure that much, it just doesn't thrill me at all. I couldn't even get past the first volume of the manga and I still don't feel the intensity or heat of Die Hard. I want more of those scenes similar to a cop getting knocked off a plane by a terrorist before lighting the fuel it leaked with a lighter then watch the terrorists on board get blown up.

I dig explosions and firefights yes, but I want anime with characters that I can relate to also.

Speaking of gore, too bad there are no music-themed anime with the brutality of Metalocalypse, now that's true adult comedy.

Fair enough. I'm not that into it either...my friend makes me watch it. xD Part 1 is pretty lame though.
