Rating R - 17+ (violence & profanity) such as Berserk Hellsing Ultimate Gantz Ask those fanbases. They will tell you. I recommend you watch them. :) |

Well because you and some other people don't like it, does not mean it shouldn't exist, right? That is the proper answer to this question. For example, I do not watch mecha, sports, yaoi or yuri but do not complain even if a season is full of them and people are only talking about them. That being said, anime based solely on these themes without any thematic depth or characterization should not be encouraged. Also I hate it when they water down the violence by not showing blood and broken bones, when they are supposed to be. It breaks immersion and the feeling of actually enjoying the anime. As a watcher of many war movies, Tarantino movies and 80s no-holds-barred action, I like realistic depiction of violence. |

Because some people enjoy it. Some people enjoy watching or reading horror gory anime or manga because it's their guilty pleasure. For me, gore mangas are my guilty pleasure because most of the anime or manga I read are school slice of life and sometimes I just gotta rain a little negative in my mind |

I am also uncomfortable with seeing excessive gore and blood but many times these give effect to the characters brutality or making them look like they have suffered a lot. Also there is demand in market for these anime as many people prefer violence over anything in anime. For me it's fine as I think it as a red colour painted by animators it's just anime. |

How is gore and everything like that just not expected? It would totally unrealistic for all this stuff to go down without there being a ton of blood and gore and dismemberment. It would make no sense at all for there not to be. That's a really good point. I hate when there isn't blood in a scene when there very well should be. It is just really distracting...and also feels too child-friendly. Sailor Moon Crystal pissed me off with that. Even though there's blood in the manga. The anime removed it entirely when she stabs herself WITH A SWORD like COME ON....... |

personally i dont like it. i mean, i dont like blood. i dont find it disgusting, only boring. i especially hate when its used as a horror element, cause i dont find it creepy or scary at all. though, some people like it and they do like it a lot. some of them watch anime only because its brutal. but if its something they truly enjoy, i dont mind it at all. |

Dauphine said: Is this a shitpost or are you being serious? You watched Tokyo Ghoul and gave it a 10, so you don't really have a problem with gore then, isn't it? Ok, ok, if this is supposed to actually be a serious thread, i'll answer seriously too. I'm actually bothered by gore too and that's why i'm always vary of any anime rated a R - 17+ (violence & profanity). Though, for some anime i can't even find information of what exactly it contains and it's frustrating because otherwise i would be really interested in it, like, for example, i can't find anything about Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou! :( I'm ok with only showing blood like in Bungou Stray Dogs(I had a phase when i was younger, where even blood bothered me, but now i'm more okay with it). However, when it get's to dismemberments, mutilation, being cut/ripped in two, eyes being poked out/ripped out and especially "real" gore like brain splatter and organs, i get queasy. Many shounen and action anime nowadays seem to be R - 17+ and it sucks, since those are some of my favorite genres! :( I don't think the R rating means much. Death Note also got an R rating but there's really only one scene that has any blood in it. That one scene has a lot, but overall Death Note is a fairly tame show. The violence in Death Note feels much more PG-13 to me than R-rated. The violence in Code Geass and Kingdom is pretty comparable to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings in terms of having a high body count but no gore and fairly small amounts of blood but it gets an R rating here on MAL. You may find the IMDB "parents guide" section to be useful. On IMDB, if you scroll down and look directly above where you see the words "Did You Know" you will see "Parents Guide: View Content Advisory." Click on that, and there's usually a description you can see for yourself and decide whether you are able to handle whatever content is in it. I admittedly actually use it for the opposite reason sometimes to see if an ecchi show I'm considering is sexy enough to be worth watching 😂 To answer OP, I don't think there's really that many animes being released nowadays that are really gorey and brutal. Anime in the 1980s and 1990s had a lot more of that. The only fairly recent examples I can think of are Tokyo Ghoul and Attack on Titan. Those do happen to be very popular animes, but generally most animes contain either no violence at all due to being a slice of life show or contain fairly mild levels of it such as in action oriented shonens and isekais. But animes like Hellsing and Elfen Lied are actually pretty rare when you consider the amount of anime being produced every year. |

I love horror anime, any kind of well done horror anime. Psychological, gore, body horror, monster horror, etc. With that said, an anime that pulls brutal punches for the sake of just doing so without any pay off for it in the end....yeah, fuck that. Babylon pulled that shit and I'm still pissed at it like 6 months later. |

You can literally ask the same question about Friday the 13th, Nightmare on elm street, Human Centipede, Saw, Evil Dead, The Thing, you can ask also the same question for games like Mortal Kombat, Doom, and Dead Space, entertainment, much like sex and porn, it's in demand and market since there are people who find it entertaining to view and enjoy, but if you don't like or have any interest in it I suggest you avoid them. |

Tropisch said: There's actually not that many brutal and gorey anime as there was in the past. This much is true, and is so thanks to a wider education and a more sophisticated society on the whole. Also, Bubble depression ended some time ago in the 00s. However, even back then excessive violence was not used as freely. There always were loud and meaningless titles, attention grabbing will exist as long as humanity does, but back then the excessive violence was used as a tool to stress something. To make a strong statement. Violence was rather shamed (excessive almost non-existent) after the war, since 2+2. Slowly, they started getting out of these cultural and historical constraints and Japanese embraced the use of the full spectrum of tools to take their point across. When there was violence, it was rather symbolic than excessive. The blood signified damage and suffering, at worst a lost hand or eye symbolized a sacrifice. Original Godzilla was about destruction and lose of life, but there was next to no violence - it was almost natural that people suffered at hands of Godzilla. Today is a different age. A lot of people, alas, realized that lack of mental fortitude and access to the mental institutions leaves a lot of people craving gratification for their subconscious or, worse, conscious urges. Thus excessive, meaningless violence sells. Twice so in Japan, where such people (showing their appreciation for violence) are openly ostracized and left rotting on the outskirts of the society. They become both the viewers and the target audience for those meaningless "works of art" which are full to the brim with excessive, hollow violence for the sake of depicting violence. No, it is not about depicting anymore, it is just about violence, about feeding it to the viewer until they provide recognition to the work and exhilaration to themselves. For some, it is just the entertainment that sells. Twice repugnant are people with principles, misusing those troubled ticking bombs slowly gaining critical mass in the society. |

For example, MAL rates Attack on Titan and Death Note as R/for 17yo and +, while Netflix rates these as 13+ LMAO (well at least on the French Netflix, idk if it's the same everywhere). So yeah, I don't really trust any age rating because it's never the same <.< And concerning Attack On Titan and Tokyo Ghoul, I think the gore is "useful" to the story because it makes the anime more realist and dark. The impact on watchers would not be the same without this violence, imo!! |

Such as what as of late? I rarely see any new anime that are explicitly violent. The anime industry is too carefree to appeal to the demographic that likes The Passion of the Christ, Rambo, Saving Private Ryan, Logan, Predator or John Wick. A demographic that don't mind seeing characters getting impaled, getting their brains blown off, stabbed, gutted, strangled or mutilated. If you're thinking Demon Slayer, then I don't agree. I don't find it that excrutiatingly violent, it's just generic battle shounen. |

The answer is obviously cause that's what people like to watch that sort of content but more slightly specifically it's to trigger the reaction of digust when watching the anime (In most people). Since people like to experience emotion with art and the digust reaction is easy to trigger with gore people add it to the anime. This also may lead to greater immersion in the story. nyugvo6 said: better question: why havn't been any shows like that in ages? there's a huge drought. I'd say this is because the demmand for that kind of thing has been mostly filled by the internet so it's no longer easy money to make a gore filled flick and sell to the people who have a strong appetite for that sort of thing. It's also because most anime is made to appeal to a younger audience and keeping the rating low is generally better for making money (obviously with some exceptions) so investors keep the ratings low. |
