It's simple really. Since there's demand for violent and gory shit the market delivers.

Is this a shitpost or are you being serious?

You watched Tokyo Ghoul and gave it a 10, so you don't really have a problem with gore then, isn't it?

Ok, ok, if this is supposed to actually be a serious thread, i'll answer seriously too.

I'm actually bothered by gore too and that's why i'm always vary of any anime rated a R - 17+ (violence & profanity).

Though, for some anime i can't even find information of what exactly it contains and it's frustrating because otherwise i would be really interested in it, like, for example, i can't find anything about Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou! :(

I'm ok with only showing blood like in Bungou Stray Dogs(I had a phase when i was younger, where even blood bothered me, but now i'm more okay with it).

However, when it get's to dismemberments, mutilation, being cut/ripped in two, eyes being poked out/ripped out and especially "real" gore like brain splatter and organs, i get queasy.

Many shounen and action anime nowadays seem to be R - 17+ and it sucks, since those are some of my favorite genres! :(

It's a genre that appeals to certain people that enjoy these anime genres (action/horror/other genre that shows brutality and gore). I get it if you're not a big fan of these types, I'm not too fond of them either.

There are a bunch of gory 3D shows and movies too I think... I'm not a reliable source for 3D programs.

1. Pandering to the deviants.
2. Realizing the mental issues of the authors. Manifesting them in a work of "art" which the has some publicity with others justifies them on a subconscious level, their urges seem not as deplorable and ostracizing.
3.Actually using excessive violence to provide a point, making it a serious point in the narrative is extremely difficult and quite rare. The majority of depictions can be attributed to either 1. or 2.

Development and civilizing of the society, education and, subsequently, art. A worldwide trend. The better educated person is, the better insights they have into life and all the questions surrounding it, the less appealing violence becomes. After the Dark Ages it was and will remain the joy of few, few who need assistance but are too afraid of the society stigma to ask for it.

There is a certain difference with depiction of excessive violence and how it can affect the conscious of the viewer. Compare:
a)Tokyo Ghoul where every second character is a monster and mutilation is easily subverted when they regenerate. Excessive violence there gradually loses impact as it becomes just a part of the narrative, without any strings attached to it.
b)Some more serious series when losing a limb or blood actually has repercussions. Just... any.

Honestly I'm okay with the type of "gore" and violence you find in R-rated show when it actually fits the story.. For example, I'm currently watching Attack On Titan, and I think that it would be a lot less impactful and "realist" without the gore.
Someone talked about Bungo Stray Dogs higher in this thread, and I do love this show, I think once again that the violence and the blood in it serves the mood and the "dark" side of the anime.

I think blood would disturb me if it wasn't "useful" for the story, or if it was really unrealistic :/
(Tho, I've seen some extract of "Corpse Party" and that really made me uncomfortable.. So yeah I totally have my limits when it comes to gore HAHA)

Supply and demand. Someone made one and it was popular enough that it seemed like a good idea to make more. Same reason why there's any other type of anime. If you don't like them then don't watch them.

Which anime do you specifically have in mind? I can't think of anything I've seen that is just violent for the sake of being violent. If there is violence it usually has plot purposes and thematic relevance, as it ideally always should.

I really couldn't care less about watching violence or gore in anime or any media content though. It's one of those things where I can understand logically and intellectually why it might bother some people, but it isn't something I personally can relate to whatsoever. When I was 9 - 10 years-old I got obsessed with watching horror films and tracking down every horror film worth mentioning out there - including old, foreign, and underground/indie stuff, and so have been extremely desensitized to any depictions of violence in media since I was at least 10.

Also, both in history and contemporary times, there is so much extreme violence and chaos happening and having happened somewhere on the planet basically every second of every day, 24/7 in real life, that I find it logically difficult to really even feel moved, perturbed, or otherwise affected by violent content in media. I'm just numb to it.

I neither seek out nor avoid a series even a single iota due to violent content or lack thereof. It's just a part of a story that's utilized and relevant to some and not to others. It's the story ultimately that's most important, so I don't really even think twice of switching freely back and forth between G-rated and X-rated-level content in violence, sex, or any other sphere, without reservations, as long as the story itself interests me.

Short answer:
because why not?

Longer answer:
A) Sometimes it is simply because someone likes to be edgy, either the mangaka/ the creators of the show or the audience. There is a pervasive but often wrong perception that something that's gory and bloody is also automatically mature and for grown-ups.

B) Sometimes it might be simple artistic expression.

C) Gore generally provides a safe space to explore themes of a dark nature because whatever happens only happens in the anime and no one in the real world is affected. Even though the watcher is exposed to extreme situations like death, dismemberment, rape etc. they are still and always in full control and can choose to not continue watching the anime at any time, safe in the knowledge that they and their loved ones are fine. It is also a way to test personal limits and in some cases it is also a certain exploration of evil, the monster, the other and the desire to understand, for example Shiki, Parasyte and Tokyo Ghoul.

D) It might also be a necessary plot element to tell a compelling story. Shingeki no Kyojin and Berserk wouldn't be so successful if the titans and demons brought flowers instead of killing humans. Since every decision could potentially lead to disaster and the stakes are higher many viewers are more invested in the well being of the characters. It also lends an air of realism to these sort of stories.
In these cases the gore is merely a necessary story-telling trope.

E) Sometimes it might also be a form of coping with real-world issues the viewer or, in case of manga, the mangaka has.

F) In some cases, especially guro, it might be simple paraphillia. Rule 34 exists for a reason.

In short short because there is demand.
Shogo Makishima... just an unemployed bitter lit major who wanted to be a cereal killer.

Remember, kids, it is called looting, not shoplifting.

hmm, anime can get away with things that hollywood can't?

I actually enjoy gore when I'm watching it expecting gore. Berserk, Drifters, Hellsing, tbh, I get tired of the kiddy violence where people get slashed with a sword and all they have is a tear in their clothes. They get smacked in the skull with a mace and just go unconscious...

Compared to the messed up crap they do in hentai, just about every anime is rather tame in comparison. Hentai is not suppose to be artistic, it just goes for the gut and does whatever sells in Japan, so all the crap you can't see in your live action fap videos will be prevalent in hentai.

This is hilarious. You watch anime with insane fights with people who have abilities that could totally destroy people. There are weapons and monsters and all kinds of things. How is gore and everything like that just not expected? It would totally unrealistic for all this stuff to go down without there being a ton of blood and gore and dismemberment. It would make no sense at all for there not to be.

That's a really good point. I hate when there isn't blood in a scene when there very well should be. It is just really distracting...and also feels too child-friendly.

Sailor Moon Crystal pissed me off with that. Even though there's blood in the manga. The anime removed it entirely when she stabs herself WITH A SWORD like COME ON.......

because the fictional mediums explore controversial subjects. I know you're not getting at that it should be stopped, still anime should never be barred from exploring gore. It's okay if you don't handle it though.
