Welp from what I saw in the first episode, there is something to this anime. Putting the OP and ED aside (which weren't really amazing to me), I feel that there is room for this anime to explain some things such as how his being a 'Non-Regular' factors into things in the tower. The announcer said that there needed to be only 200 Regulars to pass, meaning that I think perhaps he doesn't even need to fight anyone to do anything. However, that's my speculation.

Art is okay, nothing offensive really. I did notice this episode does like to turn to black at various points though.. but I'll see how the rest of it unfolds.

can someone tell me why it was so bad? I thought it was pretty cool, I liked the op song (not as much the visuals), but also thought the characters looked fine.

I mean this Anime was not that bad, the design of character was decent. But we really hate about the rushed storylines

Hmm a mysterious tower brimming with mysteries and riches huh. While Rachel's departure was hard Bam's opportunity to enter the tower sure presented him with a golden opportunity to fix that. Bam sure encountered quite the interesting pair on the first floor though a princess no less. Bam sure had some nerves as he awaited to be eaten by the eel before cutting it apart from the inside. Amusing how the sword spirit also had a preference for men but at the same time it sure proved to be a lick break for Bam. Poor Yuri though being seen as worthless by the kingdom's treasure. Looks like the second floors theme will be battle royal. Looks like this floor will introduce some real interesting characters to the series. Though Bam has one hell of a encounter to overcome first next ep. A solid first ep that did well in not just world building and character intro's but also in blending in the desperate combat that will become the hallmark for the series. Looking forward to next weeks's ep.

I read the WEBTOON and it ain’t all that. It’s the typical generic op chosen one main character. The whole series ripped off the hunger games pretty hard which I’m not surprised because the series came out right after the hunger games blew up.

Imo having read both series. The hunger games (books) are superior.

As for this episode, I love the ost and art direction, but they cut some important character interactions. The anime should be superior to the webtoon because the art is extremely ugly in the webtoon but with the pace they are going with I’m not sure anymore.

All things aside, I don't understand why in animes, people who've never even heard of each other, let alone met each other (Yuri and Bam in this case), tend to be so altruistic towards each other (was Yuri so keen on saving a shounen she's never met before just becuz he's cute??). Same thing with the sword (Black March I guess). This is something I don't understand pretty much in any anime. Apart from that, a nice start.

So let me get started

I dont read webtoons and i dont have any idea on this show so imma give my honest opinion on what ive seen on this very first ep

So the MC survived so far because of the help of these people. He literally cheated on that first task because he had a "handsome/cute face" lol
Oh well....

Overall its interesting
Art style was refreshing on what we usually see. Pacing was fast af i hope they elaborate more on whats happening

Lastly that OP and ED were underwhelming because its just bunch of credits lol

I have mixed feelings about the art. The backgrounds look amazing and the fight scene was fluid. On the other hand, the characters don't have any shading and the line art is rough. There are also some lackluster and weird angles and movements.

The OST is good, and has an interesting vibe to it.

The dialogue and plot aren't being adapted well. They're rushing the story and cutting out a lot of stuff.

Overall, 5/10 for this episode. I hope they do a better job next ep.

Interesting this show shows promise. The OP not bad tho but I'm really glad i don't have to see some plastics dancing and why does kpop song really need to include lousy raps lmao. Looking forward for more of this show since most of my friend says it has a slow start. Nice cliffhanger. Glad some interesting voiced by nobuhiko. The ED sounds not bad but at least better than the rap in the OP..

I knew it. I just knew it. EVERY TIME something gets so much hype from such a large loud crowd it always turns out to be some mediocre cliche-ridden generic battle shounen or iisekai type deal. I hate the anime community so much. Please overhype at least somewhat interesting series. Some creators are actually trying out here ugh anyways..

The writing so far aside, at least the soundtrack's great and I quite enjoy the visual direction (can't speak for everyone by the looks of it). Like the OP and ED - the songs specifically but that's probably the kpop trash within me talking lol - they're nice. Would be cool if the sequences provided the visuals to match.but my playlist will be happy.
Hopefully, the strengths in production can maintain my interest cause the story and characters don't. seem to be the selling points.

Hey, from what I heard, it starts of mediocre and gets better later on. I can't really say that for sure, but it will probably get better with time. I'm glad to see someone else who likes the animation in this show, but I'd say give it AT LEAST 3 episodes before calling it cliche. :D

As someone who has been rereading the first chapters until now, I got say this was...disappointing. Animation and "weird" artstyle aside, this adaptation skipped important plot points which have some relevancy later on for the story. Not to say how rushed it was, mischaracterizing any motivation or "feel" the characters had in the webcomic.

- Skipped plenty of Headon's dialogues. He doesn't feel as cunning as in the webcomic, nor pass the sensation that he might be hidding some truth from Baam.

- Skipped Yuri's and Evan's motivation to go all the way down to the first floor and meet this "non-regular".

- Skipped Evan's dialogue about guides.

- Skipped Yuri's talk about irregulars and the reason why she lended Baam the sword.

- Skipped the pocket's functionalities and what it is.

- Skipped all the shinsoo explanations (the "watery" element the eel was swimming in).

- No mention of Evankhell's floor.

All in all, it will definitely still watch this to the end, but I gotta say I feel there's no reason to rush this adaptation as much as they are right now. They could have skipped the OP/ED and the second floor's introduction in this first episode and fixed all the problems mentioned by me and others before...

I'd much rather not get into the webcomic, as I prefer anime, but some of these details seem genuinely important, and if they keep cutting corners in the anime like this, I might have to swap over.

As someone who had no idea what Tower of God was until I saw a trailer on YouTube, this was everything I expected it to be -- pretentious trash. I've heard about how powerful our irregular MC was going to be. But like every other shounen MC there is, he didn't do a single thing to work for that power. He was handed it like a baby with a pacifier, with every trick in the book to misattribute power to the MC to make him feel greater than he is. It's like in Haikyuu when they never miss an opportunity to inflate shortie even when he isn't doing anything.
  1. Headon opens the tower doors and attributes it to MC's power.
  2. Yuri handing MC the Black March for some ridiculously contrived reason, to "test" MC.
  3. Evan telling MC to "talk to the sword", in which MC does, demonstrating his "great power" since the princess was unable to do the same.
  4. The sword taking a life of its own and fighting on behalf of MC.

Can't you just feel how much potential he has already? (sarcasm)

Meanwhile, he's tripping all over himself like he's dyslexic, frozen confronting literally every enemy. And judging by his response to the ones he fought on the 2nd floor, we could surmise that his attack in the whale was not planned, but just another example of him not reacting in time.

4!! characters had a chance to kill MC, if it weren't for plot armor. While this might have been made to make us feel how dangerous the tower is supposed to be, it instead kills all urgency. It lets us know that we can expect MC to stand around unprotected and still survive, while the people around him get picked off one by one -- because author-kun wants it.

None of the characters so far are likeable. We have a bunch of characters showing off for exposition, saying things like
  • "You don't even know who I am and you're climbing the tower? I am..."
  • "I can't believe you're giving him the sword!! It's a treasure!"
  • "Why are you attacking me? It appears you're already under control..."

They all sound like those corny lines when you defeat someone in Street Fighter, except they're all little brats. Headon's conversation with Yuri... Like when a B-list celebrity going on a radio show for attention.

Episode score: 4/10
Expectations for the show: 3-4/10

P.S. What's up with 3 different characters calling this plain looking 12 year old "handsome" or "cute"? Like are you kidding me? You're going to drive a plot on such a weak self-insert premise. You're cute. You're the chosen one. Please enter the tower.

Everything has a reason
I am going to give you 3
1.Crunchyroll, various sites and readers hyped this up like the second coming of Christ so people either watch it only to dismiss it or are disappointed because it's not the greatest thing ever
2.Everything that starts with somewhat of a familiar setup it's deemed "boring" or "cliché" because people are in a rush for opinions and decisions, so they can't wait for things to develop(Example, some people were dropping Shield Hero last year because the show, after 2 episodes, didn't explain Everything about the world and why a certain character aged after 1 episode)
3.No spectacular sakuga but unique artstyle throw off the "animation" elitists who only want to see Mob Psycho replicated ad infinitum
(Example:Big O, a good show imo, in the beginning was highly dismissed because of its own unique american style)

I can assure that on Twitter we have the opposite reaction
And Twitter isn't the healthiest of places

It was a pretty good first episode, though everything went a bit too fast, I haven't read the manhwa yet but I have a feeling that they rushed things quite a bit... But it's still pretty easy to understand for now.
One of my main reasons for watching this anime was because of Kevin Penkin at the soundtrack, and while the music wasn't very notable most of the time, there were some very good pieces that played a great role in establishing an atmosphere, as expected from the man. (One or two in particular reminded me of "New World" from Made in Abyss, which made me happy as I love this soundtrack.)
The art is pretty good, I like how the characters look like they're hand-drawn.
I'm also really fond of some of the chara-designs, like Rachel's and the "Navigator"'s (I forgot his exact name).
The voice acting is quite good too, but nothing amazing for now, but well, it's just the beginning. (I just have an issue with the princess' voice, she sounds like your typical tsundere, which tends to annoy me a bit.)
As for the story in itself, I can't really judge as the manhwa probably establishes things better, but it caught my interest, so that's a good thing ! I'm curious to see how things are going to play out.
The characters, however, seem pretty generic, with the brave but weak mc, the mysterious weird-looking guy who leads the mc, the tsundere (actually, I thinkthe voice isn't the only problem, I think I have an issue with the character as a whole), the tsundere's sidekick, the kind-hearted lady the mc is going to fight for... Nothing I've never seen before, but since this is only the first episode, I'll wait and see how they develop. Besides, they are still entertaining.
While I said all that, I am intrigued by the person Rachel met (was it a girl or a boy ? I really can't tell).
Overall, this episode made me want to see the next one, it had a very good soundtrack and atmosphere, intriguing story and universe, characters with some potential, pretty art, good voice acting, so it's all good !
Guess I can officially declare this show as my first seasonal one.

There was some characterization, but you can only get so much out of nonverbal communication and we just didn't have people really talking with each other, so I don't get what people expect.
I don't take people serious that rate something early on, but I also dislike people judging way too fast.
This first episode was clearly intended to throw the viewer and the main character into the whole tower situation without much explanation and that is what that episode did.
We can discuss if they did a good or bad job with it, but criticizing the episode for something that it wasn't even supposed to do is stupid or do you guys run into a store to argue that the banana you bought doesn't shine bright enough?

We went from "There was no characterization" to "There was some characterization". Funny how that works. If you're saying someone can't get much from the characters through their actions and behaviour with all the conversations, talking and heck even an over minute long flashback as context for motivation that went down which are all sources of and attempts at characterization then that's pretty much either just implying that the characters came off flat or the viewer was oblivious to their personality traits. You seem pressed to insist on the former being the case because the episode very clearly tried to characterize (?) the characters.

"This first episode was clearly intended to throw the viewer and the main character into the whole tower situation without much explanation and that is what that episode did." Who talked about worldbuilding? But as a counter-argument there was quite a lot of explanation of what ws going on so the episode was also apparently doing other things it wasn't meant to do?

That entire last paragraph is an unironic testament to how well this episode handled the characters. Though now you're making me feel like saying "It wasn't THAT bad"

Funny how that works when you know the source material.
The thing is, knowing the source material, I have to compare, and if you compare there was barely any characterization. After having a nights sleep I think I got a better idea on what went wrong with this first episode. What they did was essentially taking all the important actions that happen in the source material and putting them together. In that sense it was complete, but what they didn't put into this episode was any of the context. In the source material we have a similar amount of time of what the episode showed allotted to inner thoughts, dialogue and explanation. This part was completely cut out.

Mind you not everything is explained is the source, where Bam comes from and what they were doing there is a mystery for a long time, but the rest is getting a lot more context that is basically missing. That is why I said that I would have preferred a slow approach instead of that high speed rush, but that also means they could add a lot of context into parts of the later story.

Tower of God could have profited from a similar first episode to Fate Stay Night that is longer and gives more room to get the viewer invested, but so far it feels more like the first (Deen) Fate movie that rushes through the things happening without any context. In the end if you do that it will only be nice for people that already know the source material to see the character they know animated, but it won't give people that don't know it anything to latch on. That seems to be the general disconnect here.

I'm a first time viewer of the series. I will hold off on any critical judgement for now. My first impression is that the adaptions pacing is far too quick. There wasn't any time to digest what was going on, and the lack of introduction for the characters was quite jarring. Things were happening too quickly. The visuals are vibrant and different, the sound was intriguing. The only qualms was the pacing, lack of explanation. I'll figure out more the more episodes come out, and make my judgement after the fact.

Why does this have such a high score already? It's just the first episode, and nothing has happened for us to judge this as good or bad yet.

The art directing is odd. I don't know if the art suits the story, though. Usually, unusual art styles are used for horrors or psychological genres. Well, I kind of like the art, so I hope the story is of the same quality.

The boy is being motivated to risk his life for a girl? That is a very weak motivation, and it kind of makes me not care about the story's goal.

I don't know why, but I feel like I will end up hating Rachel.

OP & ED: Now I'm interested in Stray Kids a bit. Modern music choice. 8/10.
Story: simple concept but not too much explanation. Lacks detail. 5/10
Characters: wannabe look alike rin and shota type mc adored by 3 grills at start. 8/10
Animation: aside from one slow mo sequence it was fantastic compared to the crap seasonal animes we usually get. 9/10
VA: typical VA voices nothing special aside from joraiya being the caretaker of the tower. 7/10

Overall 7/10

I remember reading this a few years back, really interesting story.
Definitely different than what I’m used to.
I like the simplistic design of the plot, ‘climb the Tower and attain whatever you wish’

Still can’t believe we got an adaptation of a webtoon, this is exciting as a viewer! Looking forward to more webtoons being animated ... like Solo Leveling, heard that’s good as well.

Hype is a very powerful weapon. I went into this with severely high expectations and was extremely underwhelmed.

The premise didn't seem interesting at all, MC seem generic and the constant cuts and half-assed animation were annoying to witness.

The M̶a̶n̶g̶a̶ Webtoon was better copout artists already have their excuses ready lmao.

Anyway, only the first episode let's hope this still lives up to the hype. Apparently the pace is painstakingly slow and they had to speed it up to keep viewers interested.

That was so bad though. Give me Dr. Stone which wasn't hyped at all over this crap if this is what's in store for us.

That 8.12 rating shows exactly why MAL is flawed. If this was an Anime original and we all went in blind seeing that first episode would it have anywhere near that rating?

Hopefully it gets better.

Graphically I don't like it at all, the designs seem flat to me, zero three-dimensionality, ugly coloring, ugly stroke, not detailed at all. On the plot it is too early to say anything but it doesn't look good on that front either.

Hmm, seems like the episode is having a pretty much middling reception, but anyways, I loved it, it was intriguing & tense through and though. Really invested in Bam and Yuri, they were easily the highlights of this episode & the ones who managed to draw me into the scheme of things.

Definitely this has the potential to become obe of my favourites. Can't wait for next week's episode, I'm hyped! :)

Basically what I got from this: OP/ED are pretty good, Kevin Penkin bringing us a decent OST, and the MC is getting shit because he has a cute face. Other than that, this was a clusterfuck of sloppy seconds from other shows I've watched. Hopefully a lot of plot points will be addressed going forward.

I don't really care actually.
if they put the cropped lore here and there, this adaptation would be flawless

artstyle is really faithful to the source material
OST is dope
Opening in pretty generic but I take that
the plot to my knowledge in case of Lore and world building and character development and stuff is second only to HxH in shonens I've read till now (which includes most of the big ones)
Animations... yeah pretty sad there is no sakuga here. but it's still good

so yeah... second coming of Jesus in realm of shonen? of course! TOG is still bears that title within most of the people who read it, and I guess here it would be another missed masterpiece to be realized way after its running is over.

but man the relevancy of people nagging about Baam's plot armor in first episode would be hilarious at the end of this season!!

I'm already seeing it clearly

People here seem to be great prophets who can make out how a 470 chapter long story will go on just one episode that barely covered 6 chapters.

Pacing sucks, seems like it's aimed for readers rather than new entrants to the series.

Art style was rough but I quite appreciated the simplicity. Now we'll just have to see how they handle more complex fight scenes.

If it is really only 13 episodes for season 1 i'm kind of disappointed, there's a high risk of missing crucial elements. Guess we'll see how it goes.

so far this show is absolutely worth the hype it's receiving. + the fact that its source is korean makes me really excited since you don't see that in anime.

I absolutely hated it. The intro was lame as hell, the pacing seemed off even without reading the WEBTOON, and overall just boring. I especially hated that it barley explains anything and the sword and strength given to him is just because the Mc looks handsome. Like, the fuck?

Not a game and not even an isekai. Plus Tower of God was here before the isekai hype.
Still it's really different from what you're talking about, it's just that you don't know it yet.

It's more like a webtoon One Piece.

Structurely it's a videogame tower made of levels, bullshit powerups and even a digital inventory, not to mention the harem already falling for generic MC's cute face.

How is this any different from SAO?

Stop being an elitistist you can't match me for that.
The idea of tower is totally different here, it's not a tower for grinding like DanMachi or SAO which mean nothing.

As I said it's more like one piece, with some geopolitical manipulation and a really big world building. The anime will cover the first part and the first part is the prologue.

6 chapters for one episode? Holy cow, now I understand why it fucking sucks.

1st half was ok. I enjoy more than last part were they start killing each other

If this is going to be battle royal then I'm going to love it. But it seems that each floor has different task. So maybe the battle royal royal will just end next week

I've come across the manga several times but didn't bother reading it, so i'm completely new to the story. I've glanced the manga some time ago, just for the heck of it, and for that reason i had no problem with the animation quality. As i recall, manga has similar art-style. Yeah, you could call it "cheap", but personally i have no problem with it.

The plot, which is what matters here, is intriguing for now at least, so yeah, i guess I'm hooked.
