what would you say is best all around, well made OVA for a anime? one that finished the story for you or gave you a better ending. etc.

Imawa no Kuni no Alice. A short adaptation of one of my favorite manga. I don't know why there's no proper adaptation for the manga, because the OVA itself is great!

Certainly LoGH and Hellsing Ultimate. I also enjoyed Corpse Party when I was younger and edgy, not sure about now. I don't really watch side OVAs for TV series, so I can't compare those.

Black Lagoon Roberta's Blood Trail. Nada como una rica, agresiva y sangrienta soldado colombiana mi parce.
Others would be Hellsing Ultimate and detroit metal city. Really good for me.

Golden Boy
Patlabor: New Files

Major: Message
Master Keaton OVA
Gundam: 8th MS Team
Wolf's Rain OVA
Detroit Metal City

Those are my 9s and 10s that are OVAs. Mostly standalone stuff and full-fledged sequels or spinoffs. The OVAs that are basically just one special episode of a TV Series generally don't make it to that level since I'm pretty exclusive with my 9s and 10s, but I do have a lot of them at 8/10. There's just too many OVA 8s to list them all.
I probably regret this post by now.

If we're talking about stand-alone, self-contained OVAs, then it's Gunbuster and FLCL for sure.

For series-related OVAs, i'd say probably Kill la Kill's Special Ep. 25 and the Levi backstory OVA from Attack on Titan.

I'm actually in the process of watching RK, but i haven't yet reached the point where i should watch that OVA, so i didn't mention it.

I've heard it's a masterpiece, though, so i'm really looking forward to it.

Gosenzosama Banbanzai, War in the Pocket, Patlabor New Files, Animation Seisaku Shinkou Kuromi-chan and either FLCL or Gunbuster to close the top5.

Only New Files is the sequel of a series and would fall in the "one that finished the story for you or gave you a better ending. etc." category, the rest are self-contained.

It has to be Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal for me. It was just an amazing addition to the main series. Not to mention that Kenshin's backstory was something I was really curious to know since Shishio's arc.

That said, another OVAs I also really enjoyed were:
-Hellsing Ultimate
-Carnival Phantasm (It's listed as OVAs in MAL so...)
-Shingeki no Kyojin: No Regrets
-Mahoutsukai no Yome: Hoshi Matsu Hito

My fav is Macross Plus, it's even in my top 5. In theory it's a sequel to Macross, but actually it's only loosely connected and also works as a stand alone. Some other ones I gave high scores to:

- Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen (also works as a stand alone, you don't need to watch the series)
- Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (might be confusing if you haven't seen the 1st Gundam series or the compilation movies)
- Robot Carnival (a stand alone)
- Kasei Yakyoku (also a stand alone, only subbed recently so it's rather unknown)
- Major: World Series (a sequel to Major)
- Gintama°: Aizome Kaori-hen (Gintama side story)

Lolicons are scum.
BABYMETAL is more metal than Metallica.
Naruto is objectively the best anime ever.
HxH 99' is decent. HxH 11' is bad.

I will always have a special place in my heart for the 1993 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA. The animation was great. I prefer this version of the Jotaro vs Dio battle even though the newer anime is more accurate to the manga.
