Is the original anime good? I like mecha anime but the art style is really not my type but if it has a good plot I will watch it. So should i watch it?

I give 7/10 (good) for this anime.

What makes this anime good?
+Well-developed characters along with a proper backstories for them
+Existentialism theme
+Shinji in NGE, you can say that he is realistic.
+The last 2 episodes. Some people didn't understand on what the heck is that but it's actually a mind conflict on each of the casts, mainly Shinji's, and that weird ending basically ends on what Shinji is arguing with his mind and accepting it.
+Music was very memorable, especially that "Zankoku na Tenshi no Teeze"
+Artstyle and animation during the first 3/4 was great considering its year of production.
+If you love mecha fights you'll probably love this anime.

Now I'll told you about the cons:
-The battle scene was really repetitive and predictable. It's always like "A wild angel appeared", "EVA(s) used ordinary attack!" It's not very effective." "Angel used skills." "Critical hit! It's super effective!", then either "EVA used plan B!" or "EVA-01 went Berserk!" and finally "it's super effective! Wild angel fainted!"
-The animation was pretty laughable in the later 1/4. That elevator and EVA-01 Kaworu scene was laughable, it's really indended for prolonging time due to lack of budget. So I mean, the animation was inconsistent. Wonderful during first 3/4 but laughable during later 1/4.
-Character development only been shown after the later 1/4, so expect some boring fights with one-dimensional characters during first 3/4.
-Asuka is the most annoying female character I've ever found. I mean, Shinji did everything, but she still got that ego and whine literally everytime to Shinji. Seriously she is the devil and she must be stopped.
-If you're not into mechas (just like me), you probably won't like this anime that much.

This only covers for the NGE and not the movie alternate ending End of Eva, which I abhor more.

If you don't enjoy character studies or analyzing themes and symbolism, then you might not enjoy this show very much as the plot itself is quite lacking and the pacing leaves much to be desired.

My mistake was watching this when I was quite new to anime, hearing how good it was, expecting something that wasn't there.

Thankfully I rewatched it 2/3 years after and exactly that ... the symbolism, character studies, analyzing a lot of the stuff was what I enjoyed immensely.
The pacing was a bit slow but probably made it a lot better.

Movie aswell, one of the greatest films, had some flaws but so good.

Eva is one of the best anime of all time and the best mindfuck anime ever if youre into those

the art is actually really good until the last 2 episodes were it's pretty much ridiculous (not even counting the Crayola minfuck scenes)

NGE is a solid 7 with the given ending and about a 9 if you watch End of Evangelion.

There's a few tone shifts throughout the series but it really holds up to today's standards in terms of character and story.

Animation is iffy at times due to budget.

Just watched the 3rd episode and I already really like it. Shinji is a very relateable character and I don't see why people find him annoying but maybe I might find him annoying later on. I don't normally like mecha anime but this is an exception because of its more psychological elements (which is why Madoka Magica is my favourite anime despite it being a magical girl anime).

I have mixed feelings about it. It seemed to have had a good idea about kids with mental issues fighting angels in giant robots and looking into their psyche, but it was executed horribly. The main character is always whining and crying and being in fetal position and not wanting to do much. The other few characters do somewhat the same, but deal with their problems differently. The one who seems to be the most calm is Rei.

If you like mecha, you might find it alright, but nothing special.

I can see how EOE could confuse a lot of people so much they might not like it. It is extremely crazy and 2deep4us! The whole movie is just violence and gore.

Dependant on what you define 'good'.
It is NOT straightforward, and relishes in leaving the viewer with questions. However, it is excellent at showcasing humanity as humanity. Not humanity at it's best or worst, but as it is. IF anything, I'll give it high credit for that.
And for being relatable at nearly any age and most walks of life, considering the amount of focus on the adults are just as relevant as the focus on the three children.

If you are one to drop a series, I say you should give it to at least episode 10, because the series goes through a shift in style and pacing in Episodes 8-10.
If you don't ever drop it, I'll still recommend it, because even if you don't like it, it is worth at least watching this importance piece of anime history.

Quick edit. Also, this is a series that IF you are even remotely interested in the franchise after finishing the series and the End of Evangelion movie, the Manga is a MUST to pick up. The manga fixes nearly all the problems the show has, however, it's preferable to watch the show first to actually understand where the Manga improves.

It's divisive as hell and that's understandable, so your enjoyment of the series will ultimately come down to whether you enjoy stories that aren't as straightforward as most and don't take issue with the characters, who are definitely unorthodox and don't develop in a conventional way. Regardless, it is something that you should give a try. I personally loved it.
Take care of yourself

Well, I've seen the show pretty recently, and it took me a while to get into the story and to like the characters as well. I guess for about 7-8 episodes.

I'm not a fan of mecha in general, but i believe this one is more about psychology than Evas vs Angels. Before the last 2 episodes, the show was good for me, but with the last two episodes, I loved it! If all the episodes were like the last two, I would give it a 10. (Now 8)

Also, yeah, the art style may disturb some people who are not used to old anime, but both the style and the context are really nostalgic, deep, and heart-waeming. This is not a shallow show just for entertainment. Be ready to question your own existence and your overall attitude/motives in life.

@You nice to see someone who also enjoyed the last two episodes. Considering all the fuss fans made for the ending, it's rare and refreshing ^_^

That's a mantra that I've heard periodically for as long as I've been a fan of the show. However whenever I try to back it up with data, I can't.

If you take a look at ANN's list of top 500 most differing opinions, surely it would show up.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=std_dev&n=500

Evangelion 3.0 shows up, which doesn't surprise me one bit. But NGE and EoE do not.

Nor do they show up in the top 500 most overrated, which would be another way of expressing this sentiment.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=most_underrated&n=500

Granted, this is just one sample set. It would be interesting if MAL could provide a query of most differing opinions according to their ratings. It looks to me like it's just top / most popular, without lists like most disliked, etc.

TLDR: Eva's good.

Since a lot has been revealed above:
You should not watch it for the "fake" plot described in the synopsis. You'll be at best leaving mildly entertained, and at worse feeling totally wronged/cheated.

Now, about what I read here:
What's old in Sadamoto's style? XD What about the Hosoda movies then?

The series is pretty straight-forward in what it wants to do/tell, unless you're completely oblivious to the (stage) direction who is not really subtile on various occasions (but stays great).

And about the absence of character-development, we see various characters progressing, stumbling, regressing over far more than 7 episodes. (and I'm no character-development crusader who persuaded itself that it was the One and Only defining characteristic of japanese animation).

One of the reasons Evangelion stood out to me was how it reaches beyond the animation cels. It's one thing to have characters that are mentally unstable, it's another when one crafts their story in the midst of their spiraling depression. End of Evangelion's finer points was how it tied up its ending to a controversial series while also throwing in real life aspects into the mix to make the whole experience feel pretty surreal.

Most stories are self-contained in their own sphere, but not this one, this one broke out of its shell. That's why I believe it still has staying power because the content of discussion doesn't have to be tied down to the fiction it presents, but you could also explore its beginnings from its animation studio, the kind person the creator is, or the never ending reception from viewers, all interesting.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

Most fanon points to it being a budgetary issue, but most tangible evidence points to two things, deadlines, and Hideaki Anno mismanaging the production. He rewrote things to the point where animators had already worked out how things were going to be storyboarded and animated, and then he would walk in with a new script that threw all their work in the trash. I met Takeshi Honda back in 2004, and he described this in a panel, and he said that it got to the point that he stopped talking to Anno personally. He would only talk to him professionally, through the context of his work. He didn't talk to Anno again until after production wrapped on The End of Evangelion, and he finally understood what Anno was trying to express. It's documented that Eva's TV ending was always as intended, that Anno wanted Shinji to smile again at the end. My assumption is that he wrote himself into a hole, didn't have the time, and had to ditch the plot and just focus on the characters to get Shinji's arc to where he wanted it.

I've seen it 15+ times and every time I watch it it strucks me as hard if not harder than the first time.

The art and direction is out of this world and it's what keeps me coming after all this watches. The story is great too, but convoluted.

To say is divisive, this is not true at all, is generally regarded as a masterpiece and is one of the most popular and well regarded animes in Japan.

About the 2 different endings, they're not that different, but I much rather prefer the End of Evangelion. It's a matter of taste and disscusing what was the TRUE or intended ending is a waste of time because they're are in essence the same ending, and carry the same message. No matter how fucked up life can get, be thankful for being alive.

I personally think Eva is one of the best anime series out there. The characters are really well made, with human and understandable behavior, uncapable of keep going in their lifes. I enjoyed the story, it hooked me til' the end, and even if the fights archetype is somehow bland, because every single time is the same (Angel attack starts sounding), the characters doesn't always react like the same, they are obviously affected by their surrounding atmosphere.

Eva is a character analysis in his own (a really well made one), and although I enjoyed the original ending of the series, I must agree that, somehow, it doesn't work as a finale.

I think that this show is only a Mecha anime on the surface, yea there are Mecha beating the shit out of each other but at its core eva is a story of self acceptence or the chance that you maybe will learn to accept yourself, the episodes 25+26 are very controversial and i think they were amazing and some of the best episodes the series had to offer
the only thing is that the ending is not a proper ending one could say, but i doubt that, because its a great ending to the Characters, but not for the story if you need a good story ending watch end of eva after episodes 25+26

If you like Character based storys with one of the best endings in anime, both story (end of eva) and Character wise (end of eva for all side Characters and 25+26 for the Pilots) you definietly should watch this show but you just have to see because the show isnt perfect.....

Personally, I like these series. The first ~1/2 of the series was a little boring for me. But the second part is absolute masterpiece in my opinion. The last two episodes and idea behind them reminds me of the Serial Experiments Lain (SEL) in some sense. If you like the SEL then I almost sure you would like the NGE too :)
