I really don't like them, and would never consider getting even just one. Don't like them on other people either.

It's funny how so many people that don't like piercings, tattoos, and even dyed hair care so damn much about everyone elses and think so low of them for it. Seriously just get over yourselves.

I don't have any piercings. Not sure I'd want any or not.
not sure if you were responding directly to my comment, but mine was negative so let me explain.

It's a heuristic, the same way that obesity hints at a lack of impulse control, obvious body modifications hint at a struggle with the self-image. It's not true every single time, but it's true often enough for it to be a useful rule: If the new semester started and you can pick who you sit next to, the girl with a lip piercing and green hair, or the girl that's just normal looking... Who do you go for ?

The answer is obvious, unless you're into damaged girls.

Shaving, having a haircut and hair style, getting a tan, and teeth whitening are all obvious body modifications too. People have for most of their history either used their image (and also their children's image or captives image) to show what family or clan or society they belong to or an expression of their own desired image. Piercings, gauged ears, tattoos and dyed hair have all been part of human culture for thousands if not millions of years.

Your argument overly simplifies and generalizes. Some of the body mods that would be a really consistent indicator is scarification and branding because it's so extreme and painful. Hair dying even little kids and old ladies can do and it isn't even permanent so it lacks deeper meaning. Tattoos it depends on location, subject, symbolism and size. Small tattoos are very casual. Very large tattoos show dedication but possibly a tough mindset which can be either good or bad. Large amount of smaller tattoos put together may show an addictive personality though which is what you may see in people that used to self harm or do drugs or drink a lot but their new addiction may be a sign of improvement depending on if the old habits aren't so much a problem, unless it's prison tattoos that basically mark number of people they killed or something. Piercings it's more down to mass quantity on the face than location anywhere alone unless they did something like pierce their eyelids shut. Ears seem not too reliable an indicator of much except how much they like getting their ears pierced and that they like collecting earings.

I'd sit between them so I can know each and judge them as individuals.

sitting between them wasn't an option in that hypothetical situation, you are missing the point. The thought experiment is supposed to model a situation where you can't talk to everyone, and where time and resources are limited, heuristics can shine.

It's a heuristic exactly because it's generalized and because it oversimplifies, the purpose of it is to allow a judgment based on generally lacking information.

If you want to know for certain, of course you are going to talk to both of them. But sometimes you can't talk to everyone, so you have to thin the herd somehow before you commit your time to a group of people or a single person. How do you do it? By using heuristics, just like the one I explained.

I meant your past post in the thread and your general point you made after in reply to me was too simplistic to be in any way realistic and accurate to be useful not just your hypothetical alone. By what you said it's not even a 30% accuracy (just an estimate). I corrected it to show where it's more accurate to around at least 40% at worst and as high as 73% at best.

Except even if one can only choose one to sit with that doesn't stop anyone from talking to the other too later or talking to neither of them thus making it not even matter as much who is sat beside because neither person is likely to just stab you or something. There are other factors that come into play even if given limited choices and information too. The green haired girl has the advantage of being easy to spot in a crowd or to ask others about her with an easy identifier. Her being easiest to track down and avoid means any possible speculated personality trait doesn't matter in such a situation for such a person because it favours both good or bad outcomes. It's also possible to pick based solely on looks alone with no care for possible personality due to lack of interest in talking to anyone anyway which is just a personal preference. Also one might just be closer so a quick convenience choice.

You made the mistake of thinking I or anyone else will always come to same conclusion about someone as you regardless of my choice but I already demonstrated that isn't required to make a choice. You're assuming I would judge by looks same way you do even though I already explained my more detailed version of it. Your scenario gives no negative image to my judgement so I could go with either girl assuming if they have similar levels of attractiveness and similar visible behaviour in the moment but I would go with green haired girl for the non personality advantages i outlined. If I needes notes or something I could spot her more quickly. If it was only the piercing that plus goes away though since that's hard to spot far away then I'd be back to not really caring who aside from who is a spot I would lke to sit.

I have an ear piercing, but when I see them anywhere else on the body, I kind of feel awkward! Still, whatever floats everyone's boat, you know? I have a friend who has done double piercings on both her ears and one on her nose, they do look pretty cool on her.

Granted, it doesn't work every time, and I've met some great people with unnatural hair color and nose piercings, but the correlation is still undeniably there. If you have any obvious body modifications, you probably have issues, and everyone who pays attention will know.
I'm not sure why it works that way, but it's no coincidence that body modifications get more common as people get poorer.

For me it's a good sign to stay away from someone, and one that I actively make use of.

This is my experience as well, though I don't think it's probable. Only more likely. And I've read that unnatural hair colour was associated with BPD, tattoo and piercings with risk-taking behaviours. It's commonly known that tattoos, piercings and unnatural hair colours tend to be looked down upon in most developed countries. Stigmas can be self-prophetic insofar they attract those very individuals who wish to be stigmatized.

Piercing is maiming your flesh and not letting it heal by putting a piece of metal in it, and I don't see anything attractive about that. People who have prominent piercings are as if aiming to make a statement of a kind. It looks aggressive, but the exact meaning of it evades me, because I can't imagine how someone can have time in their life to muse over what they should do with their bodies next.

I don't really 'get' piercings. I don't think there's anything attractive about dangling a piece of metal from your flesh, but to each their own. I'm just not into it.

Piercings are great, I've been lazy going up in size with my tunnels though.

Nice to see typical douchelords judging people on piercings though. People who claim they're ugly and for poor or 'damaged' people are just hilariously lame, vanilla people who can't stand the sight of anyone appearing different because their parents told them that anyone with a piercing or tattoo is a drug addict or a criminal.

Grow up and try actually talking to those people. I guarantee that girl with the blue dye hair and septum piercing sitting in your classroom that you loath and look down on as some radical degenerate is probably more intelligent, compassionate and just all around more kickass than any of you will ever be.

It does heal though. It doesn't stay as an open wound.

Then why do you have time in your life to muse over what other people do to their bodies? Have you not ever in your life had a haircut or specific hair style? Because that is part of your body that took thought to choose. It's not exactly the same because it's just semi-permanent for a haircut and temporary for a hairstyle of that haircut and a piercing is permanent if it's left in long enough to heal but they only leave fairly small markings if someone chooses to stop wearing jewellery in it and the thought process is usually similar as picking a haircut or an outfit just a bit more complex.

Yes, I should have used "close up" instead of "heal". I thought of those people just long enough to make a reply to this thread, which wasn't much at all. From my personal experience, people who make piercings and dye their hair do have self-image issues, and just look off-putting to me in general. Maybe someone finds them attractive, but I do not.

Understandable mistake.

Depends what you are considering a self image issue. Technically anyone that wants to change anything about their appearance at all has a self image issue.

I don't have any, but they can look good on others. Its VERY hard to find girls without any piercings. I've dated a few girls with even gauges, septum and like cheek piercings and stuff... but then again I live in Toronto lol.

Using piercings will just make it looks.. complicated.

Piercings in other places than the ears makes me uncomfortable in which I feel afraid that they will get hurt :worried: However, people are not the same, maybe it's not hurt and they find it fashionable.I'll still say no to the tongue piercing :shivering: That is too much for me.

I like piercings.

But honestly, it's just a matter of preference. Like for every person that hates them there's probably one person that loves them - though I will say that there seems to be more piercing hate than there is piercing love. That's with most things though.

Personally, I think they look great until you go overboard. In the end, it's all about self-expression. If someone wants to cover their body with piercings that's on them - doesn't matter whether I like it or not.

I see nothing wrong with piercings, and I think they look very cool actually.
I have five piercings myself, they're all on my ears though.

I understand people have preferences, and you're entitled to your opinion, but you needn't concern yourself THAT much with how others look.

You know what, I actually really like ear piercings, on both men and women.
However, when it comes to piercings on the face... not the biggest fan, especially not the ones above the lip and on the cheeks. Also septum piercings make me think of cows.

i've always loved piercings - but i'd probably only continue to get ones on my ears.
i currently have eight, though i'd like more cartilage piercings in the future. if i could
i'd honestly be down to get something like a monroe or even a nape piercing but i'd
have to really think further about those oof

really not into gauges though - they kind of terrify me

in my opinion piercings sexualized people
i would pay more attention to people who have piercings on their bodies and it makes me curious about them
though i don't want one and i think it's quite scary to have other holes on your bodies
and i'm worrying about infection

I'm only fine with ear piercings, I honestly don't find any other like nose piercings n such as attractive. And too many piercings is just a no no.

Piercings in places other than the ears, unnatural hair color and openly visible tattoos are all wonderful indicators for social status and mental health.

I can't even believe I just read this. There is absolutely NO correlation there... What absolutely awful judgmental, close-minded people.

personally, my left nostril is pierced and i have both ears pierced too, but usually I only keep an earring in my right ear. I had my ears gauged for a while, but I gave up on that mostly cus the smell was yucky. I think piercings look nice when they're tasteful, but like with everything there's always a such thing as "too much"

honestly, I wish more people voiced their distaste for piercings / body modification IRL, just like they do here. It fucking makes my day when people can remind me of how my sweet old grandma used to preach to me about how my body was in the image of god and how tattoos and gambling were invented by satan. I mean that sincerely, it's gold.

I.t.t.: Socialfags under the whip of society's arbitrary whims.

I'll say I have nothing with or against piercings but I'll definitely say that the arbitrary standards of earlobe-piercings not "counting" just because they're common is the most arbitrary socialfaggotry — at that point one just demonstrates that one's incapable of forming one's own opinion and just goes with whatever arbitrary stuff society stuffs down your throat.

It is obvious that "obscenity" is not a term capable of exact legal definition; in the practice of the courts, it means "anything that shocks the magistrate".

Then maybe He should step in and do something about it.

But I know I'm asking quite a lot of a nonexistent fictional creature.

I've worn capture balls in my ears for some time, as long as you practice good hygiene piercings are just another accessory like a watch or a ring.
Personally I wouldn't get them anywhere else because I would find it to be inconvenient and uncomfortable to adjust to, but I don't have any opinion on what others want to do with their bodies.

I only have one piercing on each ear myself (have thought about getting them double pierced). I think double and even triple piercing in ears look really pretty, actually. I’ve noticed most girls my age seem to have their ears pierced like that and it looks really nice. Regarding other piercings, I think it depends on the person. I’ve seen people who look really good with nose/septum piercings. If it matches their style and just overall “vibe” they give off (hope that doesn’t sound like utter nonsense lmao), then chances are I’ll think it suits them. There are some people it just looks good on. Plus, as far as some nose piercings go, it’s just a small stud in the nose, which is fairly subtle and not too flashy. Belly button piercings can look attractive to the right people, and that pretty much goes for any other piercing. Personally, I’m not a fan of excessive piercing. I prefer more subtle piercings, but that’s just my style. I think it really just depends on the person with the piercing and also how one perceives it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people may think a person’s excessive piercing is really ugly, but others will love it.

I dislike any piercing on anybody, not even in the ears. I don't like the look of jewelry like necklaces, bracelets, rings ect. either. I am a fun guy, I swear.
