I was suprised to see that MAL does not have Avatar: The Last Airbender in it's database.

I'm sure this debate has been done to death on this site, so I'm just looking to see whether there's agreement on the AD forums one way or the other.

Feel free to start debating it though if you feel like it.

Just to be sure; this is about the series that aired on TV in the US from 2005 - 2008 (and by extension sequel), not about the movie which obviously is not an anime.

I'm pretty sure it's not in the database because it was produced in the USA.

For me anime refers to animated shows from Japan, so I don't think of Avatar as an anime.

But there are non Japanese shows on this site though.

Is Chinese, for example.

Here in MAL, only Korean, Chinese and Japanese animation works are accepted so I guess we have to stick with that. Avatar is not an Anime.

No it certainly is not an anime (just like how RWBY and Cory in the House isn't anime)

Alright, it seems that there's basically unanimity on AD with regards to this (so far, I'm the only one who's voted yes). I'm surprised.

Well, my question has been answered.

Why are Cory in the House and Seinfield not on MAL? Would break it to #1 and #2

The only think that prevents it being qualified as an anime, is fact that it wasn't made in Japan.
Still, it was so heavily inspired by anime, I think it deserves MAL entry.
Especially, because there is quite a few non-japanese anime on the database already.

It hasn't been produced in japan therefore it's not an anime.

Don't consider it much an anime. I mean it's fine if you do and though it's story can work to that of anime story telling it has a very "western" appeal to it.

Nobody ever gives a damn about anything, nothing ever matters.

It's all just fun and games anyway.

Its just fun to hear what/how people think of something sometimes, is all.

Who cares? It isn't like there is a rule that anime is better than other animated works, like cartoons. Avatar is better than 99% of anime. So why chain to a platform which is regarded as infamously as anime when it is better for avatar to not be an anime. Just call it a cartoon and you can still compare it to anime if you want. If you want to get technical, it isn't an anime only due to how the majority of the world views the word anime to mean cartoons from japan. However, if it looks like an anime, sounds like an anime, and feels like an anime, call it anime if you want to.

@Zydeph

In the West, who defined anime as, "a style of Japanese animation", to begin with?
Most likely, weebs like us.
Besides, "a style of Japanese animation" is too vague: there are plenty of animated series from Japan that look nothing like the anime we know of, like Doraemon.

@Gorganoth

How am I bringing bait?
The topic is: Is Avatar: The Last Airbender an anime?
So I answered the question, with evidence.
The lengths you guys on MAL will go to to create drama amazes me. Even Youtube commenters are much more reasonable people.

1) Anime is a Japanese colloquialism that is directly referring to animation. Avatar is anime to the Japanese and to us Gaijin.

2) Anime is animation that must be produced in Japan. Avatar is an American cartoon.

There is also Korean and Chinese made anime which would not fill option 2. Option 1 is better as it is more encompassing in nature.
All credit goes to Sacred.

personally, I really don't mind what it is
if it were to get a Japanese dub, I bet people can't even tell the difference

it look like an anime, it feel like an anime, so why the discriminate

Objectively Speaking it isn't and never will be but of course special snowflakes are free to believe in it being anime just like some people believe in an old, beared man in the sky.
I probably regret this post by now.

I used to think it does, sometimes to me it doesn’t. More often then not though, I get more confused the harder and deeper I think about it.
