Why do anime characters always wear the same thing: For ex Luffy from One Piece, Natsu, Lucy, Gray (fairy tail), Gon (Hunter x Hunter) and also for a ton of other cartoons like South Park and Family Guy and Spongebob. Like every single time we see them, they are almost always wearing the same thing. Like, don't they ever change out!

Because the animators and character designers are lazy. Do you want to be drawing a load of outfits for one character?

Reason 1:

It gives the character a "signature" of sorts... for example, if I ever see a straw hat similar to Luffy's, he usually comes to mind. Clothing can be iconic to a show just as much as the character wearing it. Otherwise... it would be especially helpful for shows with identical twins, no?

Reason 2, AKA what I believe to be the MAIN reason:

Laziness. Why draw different outfits when they can use the same thing over and over? As if drawings have to worry about hygiene...

Reason 3:

Consistency. Not sure how legit this is since every anime and their OVA/movie/sequels have fanservice episodes where the characters end up in revealing outfits (or nothing at all...). But what I'm going with is this - the less that a character changes outfits, the easier it is to keep track of the state of the character. In many instances, a character will go from being injured/dirty/tired to perfectly healthy without any explanation. If the animators cannot even keep track of little details like that, I suppose outfit changes would be more difficult?

Reason 4:

It simply isn't important enough. Why worry about outfits over background art or character models? Etc. Etc.

Disclaimer: This is obviously just my opinion; I do not have a verified answer to give the OP, so I'm shooting in the dark here.

Simple answer: Money. It cost less and takes less time (time=money) to draw each character the same all the time, unless the scene specifically calls for something different.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

There's no benefit in having designers around just to allow characters to have a different set of clothes every day. Maybe a simple few T-shirts and jeans for the main character for when he's at home, or maybe a nice dress for a girl that's going on a date with a guy. I don't think this is something that you should fuss over.

Also obligatory high school anime is best most realistic anime ever, because school uniforms are realistic XD

Money and time.

Most anime episodes haven't just one day in an episode -> More than 2 different outfits per episode.

But also for mangas, it takes of course more time to draw completely different outfits for each of the characters in about every chapter.
It's easier and faster to have 1 outfit for a character, so you can draw that one better i guess.

Due to money. Seeing them in casual clothes is okay but if they have good story then its an exception.

^ THIS

I don't think it really has anything to do with laziness (maybe very little cases) since they'll probably spend the same amount of time drawing...so it's more about keeping a certain character "signature" look so they can be recognizable. Imagine if naruto wearing different clothes most of the time or Yato from noragami not having his classic jersey..

You should watch CardCaptor Sakura, she has a new outfit every episode. The reason characters wear the same outfit is for branding, its important for characters to be easily recognizable especially when a lot of studios draw the same type of faces on multiple characters.

Because animators already have enough on their plates without having to design several dozen permutations of the same character as well.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Because not only are they too poor to buy more than one set of clothes the animators are also too poor to chip in to help them buy new clothes (Except when its a beach episode because that's worth the extra money)

1. Marketing. If you take away the hair and clothing from a single show, the characters would look too similar to each other. Giving each character one unique outfit and hairstyle allows viewers to distinguish between characters. Instant recognition is an important factor to successful marketing.

2. Merchandizing. This is just a guess but, if the anime and/or cartoon were to become popular enough to be able to sell merchandise, it would be cheaper to sell if the character had one main outfit.

3. Time. Designing a new outfit for each episode would take a lot more time.

It's so they stay Iconic, it's the same with their hair cuts, you would ideally like a character to be recognisable from their silhouette alone, like the following:

Because of this it's often the case that the hair will always be the same, in a similar way the clothing helps with creating a character, even though their clothing may change they will still have a main piece of attire that you picture them with, it makes branding and animating for the character a ton easier.

Because it's a pain in the ass to reanimate the same character in a different outfit when you can keep them in the same outfit at least 75% of the time. To be fair, they've occasionally shown alternate outfits during non-school or "primary theme" related episodes.

Basically the same reason why characters in any animated series tend to wear the same clothes. It's easier and saves time to just always give them the same clothes, rather than having to design a whole wardrobe for them.

-Makes the character's more distinguishable/identifiable for the viewers and especially in long runner's, the clothes become apart of the character.
-Easier to draw the same clothes in a certain style rather than changing each chapter which would take time. Clothes are an important part of a character's design.

Luffy actually changes his outfit quite a lot. The opening's don't show that, though.

Because they usually wash them and wear them in a cycle.

But the animators are lazy to show that they wash them.

Of course it's handy if you have someone like Tomoyo as your best friend.
