Well, gg wp, better freeze your credit. Oh right, also fuck America for collecting all the fucktons personal info that they do. And other countries that do that. What a time to be American though (or to to just live here) =/

*Edit: people seem to be misunderstanding what this actually means. The stolen information is your credit history (which is taken without your consent from financial institutions, by credit reporting agencies like Equifax), which includes your Social Security Number, past addresses, all previously held accounts, all inquired accounts, any bankruptcies within the last seven years, and more. The use of this information could amount to accessing your bank, to taking out loans/credit in your name, to identity theft. Though you would be one in ~140 million other US residents who have had their information stolen. More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/comments/6znofc/ysk_what_your_options_for_responding_to_equifax/

Equifax's latest security breach involves its Argentinian operation
The credit report provider Equifax has been accused of a fresh data security breach, this time affecting its Argentine operations.
Cyber-crime blogger Brian Krebs said that an online employee tool used in the country could be accessed by typing "admin" as both a login and password.
He added that this gave access to records that included thousands of customers' national identity numbers.
Last week, the firm revealed a separate attack affecting millions in the US.
After being notified of the latest breach, Equifax temporarily shut the affected website.
"We learned of a potential vulnerability in an internal portal in Argentina which was not in any way connected to the cyber-security event that occurred in the United States last week," an Equifax spokeswoman told the BBC.
"We immediately acted to remediate the situation, which affected a limited amount of information strictly related to Equifax employees.
"We have no evidence at this time that any consumers or customers have been negatively affected, and we will continue to test and improve all security measures in the region."
The discovery came less than a week after Equifax revealed that a separate breach meant about 143 million US consumers and an undisclosed number of British and Canadian residents might have had personal details exposed.
The firm took six weeks to make the discovery public after first learning of a problem.
On Tuesday, 36 US senators called for a federal investigation into how three company executives came to sell nearly $2m (£1.5m) worth of shares in the company in the interim.
Equifax is also facing dozens of legal claims over the matter.

Equifax has yet to say how many UK citizens may have been affected or what data they may have had compromised
Mr Krebs wrote that the Argentine matter involved Equifax's local business Veraz.
Specifically, a web application - referred to as Ayuda, the Spanish for "help" - appears to have been weakly guarded.
"[It] was wide open, protected by perhaps the most easy-to-guess password combination ever: admin/admin," wrote Mr Krebs.
The discovery was made by the US cyber-security firm Hold Security, which Mr Krebs advises.
Its researchers explored the portal and within found a list of more 100 Argentina-based employees, the blogger disclosed.
Using this list they were able to uncover the workers' company usernames and passwords, which turned out to be matching words in each instance.
Each example amounted to either solely the worker's last name or a combination of their surname and their first initial, which made them fairly easy to guess anyway, Mr Krebs added.
'Extraordinary'
"But wait, it gets worse," he blogged.
"From the main page of the Equifax.com.ar employee portal was a listing of some 715 pages worth of complaints and disputes filed by Argentinians who had at one point over the past decade contacted Equifax via fax, phone or email to dispute issues with their credit reports.
"The site also lists each person's DNI [documento nacional de identidad]- the Argentinian equivalent of the social security number - again, in plain text."
All told, there were more than 14,000 such records, Mr Krebs said, concluding that the firm had been "sloppy".
Unlike social security numbers in the US, DNIs are publically available in Argentina.
But one UK-based cyber-security expert agreed the case raised questions about how Equifax protects the data it holds.
"This kind of security vulnerability is extraordinary as even the most basic of checks should reveal this," Prof Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey told the BBC.
"It's outrageous that any organisation that holds such sensitive personal data can build a portal with this kind of basic security vulnerability.
"It simply shouldn't happen and responding that they have now fixed the issue is not the point: it puts a huge question mark over whether Equifax have been applying the appropriate resources to online security elsewhere."

Good thing I don't have a credit card. Yet.
I want to postpone digging a hole of debt for myself as long as possible. I've seen personally (thanks to a few examples in lives of others I know) how it affects your life and the lives of others.

Technically I'm still listed under my father for all these payments. I doubt any of them are in my name directly. Unless the Big Brother CC providerfags (and I very rarely get credit card offers in my name, always rip them up and trash them) leaked my info to this specific credit check site I doubt someone will actually take strides to steal my information, it's probably not even there.

You're in trouble if you've opened a bank account too; any info you've given them (name, addresses, SS, namely your SS) is now in someones' (probably Soviet China or the Peoples Republic of Russia, or just a bunch of random ppl who happened to hack mr "admin's" account) hands.

Ugh. Fuckin' great. Guess I gotta change my bank account password then.
Fuck this shit foreal though, I shouldn't have to pay for someone's administrative incompetence. Nor is it my fault that some random ass company probably ended up with information about me when I never consented to giving it to them in the first place. Fucking ridiculous.

So what?

If you have a credit card from a major bank, you're protected.

I've had fraudulent transactions before, and the bank got my money back.

I'm not one of these paranoid people who hide all their money in their sleeping mattress because they're worried about some nonsense.

Good to know I'm still unaffected by these things (I read the links in the thread), but the eventuality of having to get it is getting a little scarier.

Okay, there's a lot of "doesn't affect me" here. If you're in the US, you're more likely than not to be compromised - you do not need to have or have had an account for them to compile your information. This is used in everything from bank accounts to college admissions to employment background checks. If you've ever gotten a real job with a company, taken college courses, gotten a bank account or credit card, and multitudes of other things, you're in the system. And if your information was compromised, you are indeed affected. There are a multitude of things crooks can do with the information, including:

1) Apply for loans and credit lines (including credit card accounts) under your identity. If they get them, YOU are on the hook to pay them off, and even if you get that straightened out, your credit history and score can be irreparably damaged, directly impacting your ability to get future ones and increasing the cost if you do.

2) Take over your bank accounts. Basically, they have everything they need to come into a bank, pretend to be you, and drain the whole account.

3) Steal your tax refunds. Again, they have much of what they need to file taxes in your name and grab your refund. And what they don't have, the information they do have can help them get.

4) Credit card fraud. A portion of those affected had actual credit card numbers stolen. It's obvious what can be done with that.

5) Social Security fraud. Again, they have everything they need to make a claim in your name, or, if you're getting payments, to redirect those payments to themselves.

6) Tax/employment fraud. Those not legally authorized to work in the United States often get real Social Security numbers of other people to bypass checks. Yours can be used in this way, and cause all sorts of problems.

7) Old fashioned harassment.

And this is just what they can do without getting additional information from other sources. Plus, all of this is in perpetuity. You're unlikely to, for example, be able to get a new Social Security number until after something happens. The information they have can be used to update itself as needed. The potential for any of those forms of identity theft will still be there next year, the year after that, and even 20 years (or more) down the line. That's how severe this is.

Folks, please be careful. If you're checking with Equifax, their ToS that you agree to beforehand states that you waive your ability to enter into the lawsuit.

What else is new? The government and businesses in general either leak private info or they're hacked almost regularly.

If you honestly care that much then I guess you better close your account, have all of your money in cash and hide it all under your bed.

This also effected people in the UK and Canada but to less extent

Also lol the the gov is trying to lure people to the equifax site to waver out of lawsuit without telling it would do that.

Also their one year credit moniterinng for free is a joke. That info stays the same forever so it can be used at any time.

You're late. Equifax removed that clause from their terms of service and applied the removal to all previous signups after public outrage got to them. And that was before this thread was posted.

Furthermore, courts can (and do) throw out such waivers if they are deemed unconscionable, allowing the lawsuit to proceed anyway. Companies routinely put language in terms of service that suggest people can't sue even though they know courts will throw it out. After all, they stand to gain more in prevented lawsuits from the ignorant public than they can possibly lose from the language getting thrown out in court.

But you are right, the 1-year free service is a joke. In addition to that being only an tiny fraction of the time frame crooks can use the stolen data, that particular service is also one of the worst rated by both users and consumer report groups. It's also a joke that they're only giving free credit freezes for 30 days, and not covering fees for temporary thaws, removing freezes, or the costs for initiating them for the other agencies.

I read through the comments on that link and many people say a waver could still apply to get that free trial year even with the removal since it was just a word change or something so im not sure what to think but a court throwing it out is at least a bit more assuring but not much. Also many said the site doesn't even work properly to the point it's seemingly randomly chosen on who it says is effeced. :/
