You know what I'm talking about...

Those subtle jabs at anime culture and it's fans...

How do you feel about it?

I'm cool with it, haven't really found a case where what they say is applicable to me.

How do you feel about series that glorify the fans and culture?
Because that shit can make me cringe sometimes, honestly.
I'm looking at you Eromanga Sensei

Metaa humor is really hard to do to be honest.

But jabbing at cultures, anime tropes or even politics is welcome to me

Actually "Get Out More You Filthy Lolicons", "Nani?! Otakus are contributing to the decline of Japan!!!" and "Fuck Weebs" are some of my favourite anime.

It makes it really awkward watching such an anime.

For people asking for examples, OreImo.

It depends on the execution, but I'm all for that sort of stuff. The problem is that I feel as though we don't get that kind of anime often, and as someone above mentioned, we mostly get anime that panders and glorifies otaku/anime culture, and when we do get an anime that's anti-otaku culture, it's eiter not very popular (no surprise) or the message goes over everyone's head and it too gets consumed into otaku culture ala Evangelion. Other times they never go far enough, they wanna make jabs at anime culture but are too afraid their audience will stop watching, so you end up with really shallow, empty statements and throwaway jokes.

This one made me think "you're saying so now, but in a few moments, you're going to be asking for more", and grin evilly.

Personally, I prefer anime that glorify otaku culture or give interesting insight in that culture.

I think it's due to the fact that japan subtly hates otakus for always wanting crappy anime series that panders to their fantasies. But they do that in moderation because they are still their cashcows.

Those anime rely on things that will never make them good.

Anything that skewers weebs is a-okay by me.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I loved this about ore no twin tails in which the message was more or less get a girlfriend but it was hidden amongst all the fanservice.

i lol'd when one of the Negima! OVA's joked about focusing on fanservice instead of story, same with gamers joking about focusing on moe instead of gameplay

Depends on how it's done. If it's done in like a friendly laugh at yourself thing like in akibaranger then sure it's cool but if it's taken too far and actually makes the fanbase look horrible then that's when I have problems.

I mean I think Eromanga wanted to be meta and I was insulted that it tried to position step-siblings as legit wincest but I do think those two aspects of it are separate

fuckin' trying to give me a false product and pass it off as the real thing, is bullshit >_> like a scam or something

Other than that, this sort of thing you bring up here:

Talking about examples of "meta", I wouldn't necesserily think of Eromanga Sensei, where the jabs are in fact no more than stitches, stupid jokes using memes for their own sake. The first Anime that comes to my mind actually is Re:ZERO. Why? Because Subaru's depiction as good-for-nothing otaku being fooled by all his illusions about isekai heroism is so painstakingly authentic, it made it hard for me to watch at times without feeling triggered.

However, if such meta stuff criticises legitimate problems like in said example, or NHK, I find it a good thing. I mean, what's so bad about being reminded about your own flaws? Makes it easier to eradicate them, doesn't it?

Neither Re:Creators or Eromanga-sensei are being meta. Anime and pop culture is worked into the narrative from the beginning so it's only natural they overlap reality. Need more solid examples or I'm just gonna think you're being too sensitive :P

Trying to be meta by taking jabs at otaku culture is like the last trailer for Mighty Number 9. Something like that?

I don't feel like there are very many examples of this.

First thing that came to mind from Watamote:

"No, son, you may not have your body pillow at the dinner table!"
