Okay so I have been noticing this for quite sometime but why in anime it's kinda rare to find an anime that has two female characters that aren't portrayed as rivals but as friends like yes there are quite a few friendships seen in an anime but it's very little you see people talk about that friendship. Like compared to the Boy x Boy friendships (which you can find in all anime) and the Girl x Boy friendship (also found a lot) why do we rarely see a girl x girl friendship that is actually memorable and people often talk about? Am I the only one who feels like this is rarely seen in anime? I hope not.

Girl x girl friendship and boy x boy friendship both just lead to shipping, by the boy x boy ships sell better in 5he shows you're watching I guess :/

Pretty sure most moe shows show girl x girl friendship though

The anime/manga industry is filled with men that have never seen girls other than in anime.
Yeah, but I agree on the lack of platonic relationships between females. Like irl girl relationships aren't just fighting over some basic dude.

Would Hanasaku Iroha and Nana fit under that criteria?

Yuri bait aside, Kumiko x Reina, BiriBiri x Kuroko, Shinobu x Karen for one on ones off the top of my head.

Female friends, in general, you got Non Non Biyori, K-on, other parts of the Hibike cast, Lucky Star etc

Kinda ugly to only have to watch Mahou Shoujo anime to see normal civilized sincere friendships between girls don't you think? it's kinda basic to include that into all genres.

If you are a fan of SoL (which I am) finding girl x girl friendships is far from being hard and some relationships between girls (non romantic one) really stuck with me in series like Aria for example.

Albeit a lot of SoLs are yuri bait and it is hard to draw the line between friendship and them having hots for each other.

Maybe cause I don't often watch SoL I usually watch anime with a lot of action and adventure and sadly you don't see that type of supportive friendship you usually find in SoL. I agree on your second point, this seems to be a flaw in all kind of anime, tv shows and movies lately.

Welp it is always the time to switch to the only true religion known as slice of life

I don't really see it as a flaw but I would rather if it either went all the way and just turned into a proper yuri or it stopped with the baiting and just showed a good friendship instead.

I think it is because the industry is kinda trying not too risk it and plays it safe so that people who want yuri can imagine it themselves and decide on how far they want it to go (ya know doujins etc.) and people who don't want it can just say they are just friends and at least most people seem relatively happy.

Because of the whole "best girl" thing. Unless it's ecchi or hentai harem (the kind where every girl wins) then only one girl can be with the MC. And every girl wants to be with the MC.

This is one of the many reasons to love Toradora. Minori and Taiga didn't let romance ruin their friendship.

In shoujo/josei anime there are these kinds of frienships.
Orange, AoHaru Ride just to name a couple

Ayukawa and Hikaru are great childhood friends in Orange Road. And still are for a while after Kyosuke barges in.

But Tomoyo is only friend with Sakura because she can't be more (I lost her quote about love being the wish for the loved person to be with her own love or something)

>watching anything else but mahou shoujo

but seriously though, there's plenty of shows with girl friendships, as someone mentioned above SOL has TONS of them, there's the whole "cute girls doing cute things" subgenre and idol shows and those kinds of series.

The first examples that immediately come to mind are Kill la Kill and Coppelion.
But based on the post it seems to be more you're skipping the genres where they're extremely common, or looking to the community for discussion related to girl x girl friendships but aren't finding them.
Which does make since, the boy x boy shipping community is often portrayed as much more vocal. Probably because especially amongst certain genres girl x girl friendships are extremely common so shipping is much more common.
Like 2 other examples that come to mind are Jormungand and Canaan but most people will remember those series for the action and not the fact that 2 girls happened to be friends. So focusing on action series you've also set the bar rather high.
Looking at my list now there's like 9 shows that I'm watching that have significant focus on friendships between female characters, granted 3 of them would be counted as magical girl anime and only like 3 have a focus on action.

So tl;dr: it's not that they're uncommon it's that you keep adding extra hurdles and portraying it as a larger issue when you set the standards to be extremely specific.

I'm currently reading the manga, Tomoyo clearly wants to be more than friends. Did the anime tone it down about her being a lesbian?

Ao no Exorcist with Shiemi and Izumi?
Black Lagoon with Revy and that fake sister?
Bleach with Rukia and Inoue?
Demi-chan wa Kataritai with... all of them?
Girls und Panzer?
Kimi ni Todoke?
And so on and on and on.

I would say people don't talk about female friendships because they are nothing special. It's not worth people's attention when girls are good friends, because it's kinda expected. But when guys show affection to one another... That's a big deal.

You will find a lot of them in Slice of Lifes and the likes. I think there are some shonens where females friendship is noticeable.

On another note, I liked the friendship of Taiga and Minori in Toradora a lot (it also helps Minori is one of the person whom Taiga doesn't treats like trash at the beginning of the series), to the point it was one of the things I liked the most of the series. They care for each other, are always ready to help the other in cases of needs, and are even willing to giving up in their love to make the other happy.

There is also Claymore, who is a shonen where the female protagonists creates strong bonds between themselves and over the series forges a friendship as strong as the iron.

As many people said, there are a lot of girl x girl friendships, you just need to look closer, even shonen and action anime in your list have it.
Like To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Akame ga Kill, Canaan and even Log Horizon and Sword Art Online
Sometimes, the girls start as rivals, but after certain events they become BFF.

Well, the most recent action+adventure+friendship anime I saw was Shinsekai Yori and Kure-nai

Maah, I won't deny it and I hate the fact that I CAN'T.
There are those girls, especially in their teenage years, who are so damn insecure about themselves that they are bitching about every girl, even their "friends".
The real problem are plenty of grown up women, who are still bitching about their peers / other women. They waste so much energy of their grown-up asses to bitch about "Oooh, her boyfriend is so cute, I bet she doesn't even love him." Blah blah blah...
The worst type was always the "I'm different than other girls, the are all vain and dumb and all the same. I hate drama." Believe me, those special snowflakes are the source of all the drama lol...
And the worst fact is that almost every girl (included my dumb 16 year old self) is going through this asshole-phase.

Luckily, Luckily, luckily... there are always a few girls, even in their teenage years, who aren't like that and actually LIKE their female friends without back-stabbing them, if they leave the room. It also gets better with women above 20. A little bit.

That's because of things like the smurfette principle (only having one girl to a group of three or more guys), harem elements/love triangles (girls competing for a male character), and in general girls only existing to be paired off with male characters. Even if a show has none of that and there are female friendships, most of the time the bulk of attention will be focused on the M/M (platonic) or M/F (romantic) relationships. Ofc, this only applies to shows that don't have a female majority cast, particularly shounens and seinens.

Most idol anime have friendship between girls. Also, watch a few Manga Time Kirara adaptations with a mostly female cast.

You have your choice of the following genres:

• SOL
• Mahou Shoujo
• Sports
• Idol
• CGDCT
• Romance

All of these are either built upon female friendships or contain them often.
