| To be honest, most of my ships end up being 'character with other character who seems to understand them the most', and that often ends up being two guys who are best friends (or at least close/on their way to being close). I don't expect them to get together, but all it is to me is that I enjoy the thought of the two together and sharing experiences; I like their vibe and it brings me joy. This is actually the case for me in real life too; I love watching two best friends (regardless of gender) interact all chummy-like; it's one of the sweetest things ever to watch. Some of my friends who act in this manner together tell me that people very often mistake them to be a couple, which brings us back to why people might ship two friends together. Media, for some reason, doesn't seem to portray two girls as best friends too often, so sadly my ships usually don't consist of two females (although I'd like them to-- my own creations are full of all types of ships). Or if media does feature two female best friends, the relationship between them is often really flat/just kinda created to seem cute or fanservicey (?) as if the creator isn't sure how girls interact with each other. Yet in a lot of anime, you see a HUGE focus on male to male bonding, friendship, relations in general, and so on. Like, you usually have to check out an actual shoujo-ai or something with GL undertones to get anything close to that for females. Just as an example, male to male rivalries are often just "I'll beat you one day, my friend," or like, "I'll defeat you but wow I respect you so much," so again, it's establishing a bond beyond something which can't be moved. Female to female rivalries are often just "I hate her and I have to beat her or else she'll be in my way". An example of this would be Sakura and Ino from Naruto. With these two, unlike the usual male rivalry of fighting someone you respect or are friends with, their rivalry was based on actually hating each other at the time despite being friends before. |
