Well there's no rush! I sort of hope to post the new challenge by January 1st, but the world won't end if it's not ready. I originally wanted to have the discussion and planning for the 2016 manga challenge in the 2015 discussion thread, but I guess it somewhat derails the real purpose of that thread, so it was better to do create a new topic. What will be new in the challenge next year? We will get different difficulties (I really liked how this was implemented in the 2015 Anime Challenge) and there will also be an extra category called bonus points. I am also calling for help to anyone who would like to design some badges/graphics for the event! You can send some prototypes here and we can include some of those in the official challenge post later. The original list from 2015 is below under a spoiler that. The purpose of this post is to compile more items for the list as to have more items to choose from and also to clarify a couple things that I have in mind and create some discussion. Last month I said I'd like having 15 items for easy, 30 items for medium and 50 for hard. In the original 2015 planning post it seems "insane" was also mentioned, so we'd have to come up for a number with that if we wish to include it. I want to have an extra category called bonus points with sort of crazy stuff or very specific stuff and participants would be able to do them regardless of what difficulty they're choosing. For example have 3 or 5 items there. An idea for a bonus point item that I have is: start and catch up to a long-running (300+ chapters at least) still-publishing manga My final question is regarding the difficulties. In the Anime Challenge they set specific items under specific difficulties, but I'm not sure if to do it like that or if to base it just on the number of item the participant chooses and then they can decide which ones to leave out from the total list. Let me know what you think! ☆Challenge list: ➤Read a one-shot ➤Read a manga published before the 90s ➤Read a manga published after the 90s ➤Read an award-winning work ➤Read a compilation by different authors ➤Read a manga by your favorite author/artist ➤Re-read a manga ➤Read a manga by Osamu Tezuka ➤Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike ➤Read a debut manga ➤Read a manga that became a prototype for a longer running series ➤Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) ➤Read a manga that has been adapted to live action ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) ➤Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc) ➤Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic) ➤Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList ➤Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList ➤Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username ➤Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10 ➤Read a manga that you can relate to yourself ➤Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant ➤Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge ➤Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc) ➤Read a manga that has a one word title ➤Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships ➤Read a manga with children in it ➤Read a manga about food ➤Read a manga about music ➤Read a manga about war ➤Read a manhua ➤Read a manhwa ➤Read a slice of life OR comedy manga ➤Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga ➤Read a webmanga Also, I invite participants that have already finished the one this year to share their impressions and (maybe even recommendations!) in the discussion thread! |

Hi tsuyukunaru, best of luck with the new challenge. I could help with the new badges. Would you like to sort them into three different catagories (like bronze, silver and gold) so the challengers will get a different banner depending on the level of difficulty the challenge they completed had? |

A little suggestion. 1. How about "Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga" challenge divided into 3? Make it into: ➤Read a horror manga ➤Read a sci-fi manga ➤Read a fantasy manga 2. How about "Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump", "Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine", and some more popular magazines? Will think of more later. |

50 seems like a hell of a lot for "Hard". That's double the number we needed last year, and 10 more than the anime challenge's "hard" difficulty. I wouldn't mind different tiers for the different difficulties. like read a manga of at least X chapters with X being longer for higher difficulties. Like 50/75/100. You can probably cop the popularity challenge directly from the anime list. Something along the lines of "Read a manga that was serialized in the same magazine as the manga you rated highest for this challenge so far" could be decent too. |

Don't worry tsuyokunaru , as you said it's better to have time to plan it well than rush it , I would even say that "opening" the challenge on middle of january might be better . FlameWingman21 said: I support that idea . And dividing slice of life / comedy in two entries would be good too .A little suggestion. 1. How about "Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga" challenge divided into 3? Make it into: ➤Read a horror manga ➤Read a sci-fi manga ➤Read a fantasy manga Taking it from something I proposed in the discussion thread : ➤read a manga that have a tag with less than 300 entries in MAL database according to the manga search With the same logic we could divide the "time periode" related stuff , like instead of " Read a manga published before the 90s " and "Read a manga published after the 90s" : ➤read a manga published before 1990 ➤read a manga published between 1990 and 2000 ➤read a manga published between 2000 and 2010 ➤read a manga published after 2010 something like that . Picking (shamelessly) ideas from the anime challenge also : ➤read a manga with less than 750/1500/3000 completed members (hard/medium/easy) ➤read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge ➤read a manga that does not take place primarily in Japan , but is still within our universe I also think we should remove the item " Read a manga that you can relate to yourself " . Like for a lot of other users I found that it was too difficult to make something out of it , and as a result I left that one the two times I did the challenge . AudioTsunami said: That's why it's Hard . huhu50 seems like a hell of a lot for "Hard". But more seriously, maybe 20/30/40 would be better for the difficulty levels , and then having 50 items will make it so that everyone have more choice how to complete the challenge , even for the "hard" difficulty . |

I'm definitely going to complete it this time! Here are some ideas for challenges: - Read a manga by one of the members of the Year 24 Group. - Read a manga published by Garo - Read a shoujo ai manga - Read a shounen ai manga - Read a manga over 30 volumes long Dullboy said: we could divide the "time periode" related stuff , like instead of " Read a manga published before the 90s " and "Read a manga published after the 90s" : ➤read a manga published before 1990 ➤read a manga published between 1990 and 2000 ➤read a manga published between 2000 and 2010 ➤read a manga published after 2010 something like that . Or maybe one for each decade, beginning from perhaps the 50s. read a manga with less than 750/1500/3000 completed members (hard/medium/easy) I'm all for this, I like this challenge. Am I the only one that enjoyed the "Read this, this, or this" genre challenge? I feel that those gave us extra choice to how we wanted to complete the challenge without adding a bunch of different categories that we had to sift through. People want choice but they seem to be arguing against it here. I don't know what Garo is, and google only turned up the anime of that name, so no thanks on that challenge. Shounen ai and Shoujo Ai have the potential to make people feel uncomfortable. I like the decades challenges how Dullboy wrote them. I feel those could go straight in. Are the numbers for the completed members challenge looking a bit low to anyone else? Edit: Nevermind, Lone Wolf and Cub almost qualifies for the Medium difficulty. |

Fair enough. How are we gonna handle a challenge such as "x or less members completed" for ongoing works? Might as well get that question out of the way now. Edit: Also I think 1k/2k/3k, would probably be better for the numbers on that chalenge(the anime challenge has it at 10/20/30, so it would be easier to remember). |

Possible challenges could be: Read a manga based on a one-shot that got serialized Read a manga about a sport Splitting up the following "Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame)" Read a manga from last years top 30 top-selling manga list (or any other year for that matter) Read a manga that has not been adapted in any way (Anime, Live Action, Stage play etc.) - For lower difficulty just without an anime adaption Read a manga that has been adapted as a long running Series (min. 100 episodes) Read a manga from an Author you normally dislike Read a manga that started in 2016 Finish a dropped manga Read a historical manga Read a manga that is not set on earth Read a manga that is a collection of short stories |

^ I like those second badges quite a lot Sooru , very nice work you're doing . AudioTsunami said: right . in fact I'm not sure I like it how I write it first : more than taking the "members completed" aspect , we could do it with the "number of members" as a all . That would make it more easy and less complicate with the manga that are still on-going . How are we gonna handle a challenge such as "x or less members completed" for ongoing works? Might as well get that question out of the way now. Also I think 1k/2k/3k, would probably be better for the numbers on that chalenge(the anime challenge has it at 10/20/30, so it would be easier to remember). The numbers I gave at first were just a rought idea , based on my experience , so I just gave them as exemple . The fact is , MAL community is more interested in anime than manga in general , so usually the numbers of members for manga are really lower than for anime overall , even considering manga that were adapted into anime . delija9091 said: I like those .Possible challenges could be: Read a manga about a sport Read a manga from last years top 30 top-selling manga list (or any other year for that matter) Read a historical manga Read a manga that is a collection of short stories AudioTsunami said: I understand what you mean, but then if the challenge was 20/30/40 for the difficulty levels , and then there is 50 possible item to pick from , that would leave a lot of possibility about what to pick or not . People want choice but they seem to be arguing against it here. Even at "Hard" level, there would be 10 item more than needed , wich is enought to forget a "read a comedy/sport/horror/etc manga" for a particulary genre you really don't feel like reading . And like that , we could had a "read a shojo-ai/shonen-ai manga" , and people that don't want to read in that departement would still have more than enough choice to do the challenge without it. |

What about these: - Read a manga with a "Play or Die" situation - Read a manga about time travel - Read a manga about politics - Read a manga with childcare - Read a coming of age manga - Read the spin off or the sequel of a manga you have already read - Read the remake of a manga - Read an Axed Manga |

I support long-going manga, but since there are a lot of monthly or irregular series, instead of chapter count there should be volume count. And so instead of listed category it would be requirement to complete at least one manga that has set minimum number of volumes for each category. Something like 20/30/40 for easy/medium/hard. I think all of the multi-genre categories should split and there should be added categories like sport, space, maybe vampire/demon, shoujo ai/ shounen ai |

Woah, lots of posts to reply to. @Sooru great work so far! I like both the participant/completed duets and the ones using categories. We can definitely have equivalents of easy - bronze, medium - silver and hard - gold. I'd like to see some using CLAMP art and stuff. @FlameWingman21 and Dullboy I agree with AudioTsunami that either-or categories should stay (maybe not these ones particularly, but have a couple of them?) because if I like one and not the other, then I can choose something more to my liking. Some people don't like horror for example and if they want to do the hard challenge, they might be forced to and I wouldn't like that. @AudioTsunami I think we can lower the number of categories for hard to 40 if most people agree, but considering there are a lot of short works that people can read, I don't think 50 is such a crazy number if someone wants a bit of a challenge for the whole year. @Dullboy I'd also want to not have extra challenges for participants to leave out if someone is doing the hard challenge because then having the choice to leave something out makes it easier. So, if the hard mode is 50 titles, the challenge list should have 50 items. I'm okay with taking out Read a manga that you can relate to yourself since many people had trouble with that one. In general most of these suggestions are really awesome (I'll compile a first list later and then we can discuss different items to include or weed out). Thank you for all the suggestions so far and we can keep them coming. You can agree or disagree with what others suggest too and explain why. I'd also like to consider certain things such as considering both potential participants that don't have access to physical copies of stuff and rely on scanlations and also participants that want to read everything from an official publisher, but I'm not sure if that'd put too much restrictions on the list. I guess I just wonder if I'd be able to find manga from the 50s scanlated haha. |

So we're going to have only 50 items to choose from? Then I suggest to remove "re-read a manga". Though I would not choose the hard mode so it won't affect me, but I think not every one want to re-read. If it's only 50 then there's no need to separate it since there are many suggestions already. |

I guess I just wonder if I'd be able to find manga from the 50s scanlated haha. That is just mean! Imagine the money and possibly the inability to get them cause of country /o/ Even if someone reads 1 volume stories (which is sad for a manga challenge), it's still 50 volumes and where I live a volume costs 10-15euros (not mentioning how few are released on the west and are completed) /o/ I don't mind whatever the challenges, but physical copies should stay as a personal limit rather than an official one. It is really too much of a challenge. And yes, I know I wouldn't have to do that, but it'd annoy me when I want to read a lot and complete every challenge /o/ About the genres, I prefer co-categories myself, not so much because I may not like a genre (it is a challenge after all, you are supposed to get out of your comfort zone too a bit), but I wouldn't want 1/4 of the challenge to just be genres. It just seems boring. Creative and various challenges are so much more fun. And I really had fun last year :D My 2 cents :3 |

- Read a manga that's announced to be adaptated, but not before the challenge ends (I believe this point will be relevant in summer and later...) - Read a manga published in the same magazine in which was serialized your favorite one - Read a manga which promo pic/volume cover annoys you right after first look |

Hi tsuyokunaru, I think that the on-going manga challenge is a really good idea, but that the items should be free to choose from a list, unrelated to whatever difficulty you attempt.. Another thing is that I don't think filling the items with genres is a good route to bring more items to the list, quality over quantity, I think there should be more thought given to what should remain in the list to give it some sort of balance, even more so if you want to have the exact number of items needed for the highest difficulty.. Which I think 15/30/45 would be better, or 15/30/50 as you mentioned is fine too.. :P In terms of challenge ideas: » Read a manga that started the year you joined MAL » Read a manga with a non-human main character » Read a manga about food, music OR art (I think this would be better, I know it isn't about taking items off the list, but it gives more room to choose from) » Read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge » Read a shoujo ai OR shounen ai manga » Read a manga that started in 2016 » Finish a dropped manga » Read the sequel of a manga you have already read » Read a manga from MAL's Top 50 » Read a manga you have at least a physical volume of (I know this is not fair for some people, but that's why I think there should be extra items) Magazine related items seem like a good idea too! If I am repeating ideas by other members, think of it as saying that I agree.. :) I don't think re-read a manga should be left out, I really liked that item, and I'm sure a lot of people did.. /: Sooru, I really like your badges! If I may be so bold, would you mind doing some of Nazo no Kanojo X, Prunus Girl and Hoshi no Samidare? :P I know some of them were used in this year's challenge, but it never hurts to have more to choose from.. :$ Also, how about making more variations for completing the challenge twice? :D Your ideas are great.. :) |

I'm okay with the number of categories = the number hard mode is, but if that's the case than the "either or" challenges should definitely stay to give people the power of choice. My main problem with the "Shounen ai/Shoujo Ai" challenge and challenges like it(and my problem with a hard copies only stipulation) is that if it is a category or stipulation that limits participation in the challenge. I thought this challenge was super fun and I think everyone should be able to experience it, so I think including stiplations or categories that limit participation is counter intuitive to the goal of the challenge, which is to get more people to read more manga, and have a focused goal in doing so. If the number of categories and hard mode are the same than I feel these challenges shouldn't be included. All of sooru's badges are really well done. I also liked a lot of his suggested categories as well. I saw a lot of "top 50" type suggestions, and we already kind have that. "Read a manga with an 8.5 or above". If you sort the list by manga only, 8.5 or above is the top 99 entries only. If you go to Manhwa and Mangua, you get 8 more. So essentially you have a top 106, challenge. Maffy is right that we shouldn't have too many genre challenges, so there is definitely gonna need to be pruning @Flamingwing: Yeah, I was more talking about something along the lines of this than of something like one piece. Where the number of people currently reading the work is under the threshold so if the manga had ended that day and everyone who was currently reading it finished it, you'd still be under the threshold to complete the qualify. @Dullboy, if we did total members instead of complete members, we'd need to do a large numbers tweak(it's a difference between something like Lone Cub and Wolf qualifying for medium vs having to get to the 2,788th most popular series just to qualify for medium. Hard would be 5,327th) . Also, I feel inactive and dropped members shouldn't really count to the popularity of a work, so I think reading or completed members based on whether the work is ongoing or not, would be fine, and the numbers wouldn't need to be tweaked because i think 1k/2k/3k is actually surprisingly good given the disparity in popularity. Also when you delve too deep, you get a lot of manga that hasn't been completely scanalated(or even completely translated at all). One of my favortie series actually may never be completed simply because it just isn't popular enough and hasn't been licensed by a major company(Glaucos), which is really a damn shame. |

Including everything that has been mentioned so far, it has 95 items without any pruning. 1 Read a one-shot 2 Read a manga published before the 90s 3 Read a manga published after the 90s With the categories by decades below, these became redundant. 4 Read an award-winning work 5 Read a compilation by different authors Not sure if I want to keep this one. 6 Read a manga by your favorite author/artist 7 Re-read a manga I'm okay with taking this one off the list 8 Read a manga by Osamu Tezuka I've decided that I'd like to remove this one or any other specific author item. 9 Read a manga that is tagged with a genre you dislike 10 Read a debut manga Not sure if I want to keep this one. 11 Read a manga that became a prototype for a longer running series Not sure if I want to keep this one. 12 Read a manga adapted from a different source (i.e. original anime/light novel/videogame) 13 Read a manga that has been adapted to live action 14 Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (i.e. shoujo if you're a male in his 20s, etc) 15 Read a manga with a target demographic that can apply to you (i.e. josei if you're a female in her 20s, etc) 16 Read a manga that has a main character of gender opposite to the demographic (i.e. female lead in a male demographic) 17 Read a manga with a score of or below 7 in MyAnimeList 18 Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList 19 Read a manga that starts with the same first letter as your username 20 Read a manga that someone on your friends' list rated a 10 21 Read a manga that you can relate to yourself I'm okay with taking this one off the list 22 Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant 23 Read a manga that another user has read for this challenge 24 Read a manga that has a main character that is a professional in his field (doctor, detective, embalmer, etc) 25 Read a manga that has a one word title 26 Read a manga that focuses on non-romantic relationships 27 Read a manga with children in it 28 Read a manga about food 29 Read a manga about music I like the suggestion to compile these two along with art. 30 Read a manga about war I'm okay with taking this one off the list 31 Read a manhua 32 Read a manhwa 33 Read a slice of life OR comedy manga 34 Read a horror, sci-fi OR fantasy manga 35 Read a webmanga 36 Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump 37 Read a manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine 38 Read a manga by Waita Uziga See Osamu Tezuka above 39 Read a manga that have a tag with less than 300 entries in MAL database according to the manga search 40 Read a manga published before 1990 41 Read a manga published between 1990 and 2000 42 Read a manga published between 2000 and 2010 43 Read a manga published after 2010 44 Read a manga with less than 750/1500/3000 completed members (hard/medium/easy) 45 Read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge 46 Read a manga that does not take place primarily in Japan, but is still within our universe 47 Read a manga by one of the members of the Year 24 Group. I'd like to eliminate authors this time around 48 Read a manga published by Garo Too specific 49 Read a shoujo ai manga 50 Read a shounen ai manga controversial. maybe to be included in the bonus points section. 51 Read a manga over 30 volumes long volume count might be unfair for print-only readers 52 Read a manga that is considered a classic/had an impact on future manga how would be decide what counts? 53 Read a manga based on a one-shot that got serialized we already have the prototype, so this is like the opposite? We keep one or the other. 54 Read a manga about a sport 55 Read a manga from last years top 30 top-selling manga list It might be complicated if the participant already reads them 56 Read a manga that has not been adapted in any way (Anime, Live Action, Stage play etc.) - For lower difficulty just without an anime adaption I like this one! 57 Read a manga that has been adapted as a long running Series (min. 100 episodes) [b]58 Read a manga from an Author you normally dislike[b] I disagree with this one [b]59 Read a manga that started in 2016[b] I don't like/agree with this one very much [b]60 Finish a dropped manga[b] some people don't drop manga 61 Read a historical manga it can be paired with military like the did in the Anime Challenge 62 Read a manga that is not set on earth 63 Read a manga that is a collection of short stories 64 Read a manga with a "Play or Die" situation Too specific 65 Read a manga about time travel Too specific 66 Read a manga about politics Too specific 67 Read a manga with childcare Too specific 68 Read a coming of age manga I like this but I wonder what could count for it? Isn't it too specific? 69 Read the spin off or the sequel of a manga you have already read [b]70 Read the remake of a manga[b] A bit too limiting 71 Read an Axed Manga I think this can be hard to determine sometimes? 72 Read a manga based on a true event (or person) 73 Read a manga from an author you never heard before [b]74 Read a manga from MAL's Top 20/40/60[b] redundant 75 Read a manga that someone on your friends' list dropped I disagree with this one 76 Read a manga that you didn't consider reading because of presumptions I disagree with this one 77 Read a manga with adults as the main cast 78 Read a manga about japanese culture I disagree with this one 79 Read a manga about a specific profession/workplace (for example office) a bit redundant, but this could be kept and the one with the professional in the field eliminated. 80 Read a manga that's announced to be adaptated, but not before the challenge ends (I believe this point will be relevant in summer and later...) I disagree with this one 81 Read a manga published in the same magazine in which your favorite one was serialized 82 Read a manga which promo pic/volume cover annoys you right after first look unsure about this o 83 Read a manga that started the year you joined MAL 84 Read a manga with a non-human main character 85 Read a manga about food, music OR art 86 Read a manga recommended to a title you read and liked for this challenge 87 Read a shoujo ai OR shounen ai manga controversial. I think it could be included in bonus points? 88 Read a manga that started in 2016 I don't like/agree with this one very much 89 Finish a dropped manga some people don't drop manga 90 Read the sequel of a manga you have already read 91 Read a manga from MAL's Top 50 AudioTsunami explained why this is redundant 92 Read a manga you have at least a physical volume of I disagree with this because it's limiting for people who can't buy manga 93 Read a manga that has an anime adaption too easy 94 Read a manga that has a video game based on it seems a bit limiting 95 Read a manga that fits two challenge items seems redundant to me I'm going to review all the items and try to consider how we can take it down to 50 and which ones we should leave out. As always, I'm open to ideas. I'm not closing down suggestions completely, but try not to have something redundant or too complicated as a suggestion because I'll be keeping that in mind when pruning this list. @Maffy I think I was misunderstood. What I said is precisely that I don't want to make things so specific that it would be difficult for participants that rely on one or the other completely. If I only use scanlations it might be difficult to get manga from certain eras and if I put a volume count as a requirement for participants it might be difficult for people who only want to use physical copies to want to participate, so I'll probably try not to restrict things so much in the items. I would never force participants to use one or the other outside of their own choice, but I also want them to consider participating. Please bear with my while I work on the list. I've been sick for the last couple of days and it's been hard to get on the computer (I was doing stuff from my phone). @Ryuma00 well we'll have 50 items for the hard list and then probably 5 more under bonus points. Do you mean calling Hardcore all 55 of those or something else? |

@tsuyokunaru what's wrong with debut manga? I think it's fine there. Anyway, after seeing many interesting suggestions, I don't mind my suggestions not used. I think they're better than mine. Also, Waita Uziga looks like a hentai mangaka to me XD. I don't think read a manga that started in 2016 is a good idea. I think it'll be confusing. HeNrYTG50 said: I don't think re-read a manga should be left out, I really liked that item, and I'm sure a lot of people did.. /: Well, the problem is that those who don't re-read will have to re-read to complete the challenge. I know this is a challenge, but the main purpose of reading challenge is usually to read more new things. 3 cents. AudioTsunami said: I'm okay with the number of categories = the number hard mode is, but if that's the case than the "either or" challenges should definitely stay to give people the power of choice. Agree with this. I guess the most important thing now is to decide whether 'the number of categories = the number hard mode' or not? |
