What got me into the anime world was FMA and subsequently FMA Brotherhood. I was impatient for the last episode, so I've read the final parts of the manga to know what happened. That was my first real encounter with this medium. While I continued warching anime for some time I became focused mainly on reading manga.

I actually don't remember higurashi that much since I only watched the anime a long ago, but one thing is for sure, umineko is a lot more complex, especially for the whole concept of universe(meta/real worlds, etc). Also what it "looks like" may not be it since umineko trolls the readers quite a lot :>

Try out shinsekai yori then after you complete kara no kyoukai that is, s; g 0 is upto you :> or you can fast track KoT read too but that will be difficult with umineko I guess.
