I know this is a stupid question, I'm new to anime so I don't know how the system works with it, but how come dubbed anime is always behind? They can't just be at the same episode? Look at Naruto, the dub is still at 300 episodes. I'm sorry for my ignorance, I'm just asking.

Because 99% of the time, anime gets released first in Japan.

Anime that are not very profitable don't usually get licensed, and therefore not dubbed as well. Some studios don't even want their anime dubbed, like how Toei is hogging rights to DBZ Super and not letting anyone dub it yet.

As for something like Naruto or Pokemon, if they're not currently being simulcast, it's only natural for it be a ways behind the sub releases.

And of course, cost and time are also big factors.

They're actually getting better and faster than back in the day. Now with the more popular series it'll take only a few months to release the English counter-part whereas it would take sometimes up to 4 or 5 years to license and redistribute in English.

Funimation is slowly working on that with their new simuldubs. Of course they're a few weeks behind, but that's as fast as they can get them out.

Dubs such as Naruto have always been behind, the studio can't do anything about it.

Simply because a lot of things need to be done first like receiving rights to dub the anime which takes a lot of time because the anime doesn't belong to any dubbing company like funimation. It wasn't created by them so dubbing without receiving any right to do so would be like illegal or something like that. After they have received those rights they can therefore go on to do other things like hire voice actors which again takes time because of auditions and blah blah and other shit that i don't really care about.

Because releasing them at the same time would require either the Japanese studio to release the dub themselves or the license holder being a lot more closer involved in the production of the series.

Because the show is developed for a Japanese Audience, thus it is released in Japan first, and if a distribution company has developed interest they will acquire the rights than dub the show.

Only places I know that can keep up are still at least 6 months behind, depending on what they choose to broadcast.

Them reverse importing fears. That's pretty much what keeps them behind. At least as far back as they are. Broadcast dubs are trying to make the gap smaller though.

As long as the right shows are being dubbed, we can say they're not so bad. The shows on Toonami are actually done really well for the most part.

Otherwise if Sentai/NIS America keeps picking the wrong shows to dub, then avoid at all costs.

Not surprised that some people just HAD to turn this into a Sub vs Dub thing even when the OP wasn't even trying for that and was asking a genuine question.

On topic, it's probably licensing issues like some have already said and the plain fact that anime is first and foremost released for Japanese audiences before the rest of the world. However, I can think of one show which had the English dub released BEFORE the Japanese audio and that was Space Dandy. Considering it was made by the same creator as Cowboy Bebop, I wasn't surprised.

That's why you just watch both, then just laugh at the close mindedness of it. Then see reactions "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?! THIS ISN'T THE NATURAL ORDER!" and then in the future both dub and sub watchers can get married.

Another possible reason: thanks to Japan and North America having the same Blu-Ray region code, Japanese companies sometimes impose an additional delay on the North American release to cut down on reverse importation (Japanese fans buying cheaper North American releases rather than the expensive Japanese domestic ones), which means it takes more time for the English dubs to be available.

Why is this even a thing? Couldn't they just change around the regional code? Well.. I mean I understand that doing that now would probably render all Blu-ray discs in circulation now useless but... That just seems stupid to begin with.

Take it from me, I used to loathe subbed anime because reading and watching felt unnatural. However these days most of the time I don't even notice I'm reading, it just sounds like they're speaking in English. So after watching subbed a bit, it wont really phase you... However I must warn you, when you are able to watch subs just don't turn into one of these subbed-only elitists. I get that people would rather watch subbed and that's fine, but to go through and bash the other is just completely mindless and moronic.

Unfortunately, it's a decision beyond the powers of the anime industry, whether in Japan or elsewhere. Maybe it was set that way because of the popularity of anime in North America, and the Blu-Ray Shadow Council thought, "Hey, Americans and Canadians might want to import this stuff," while not considering the reverse importation angle.

"Season 1 didn't sell very well, so the company that picked up season 2 decided not to risk dubbing it" doesn't sound like a religious reason from any religion I've heard of.

NIS have only dubbed two shows which were NagiAsu and Toradora. They're great shows so I can't say the decision to dub them bothers me even if I would literally kill to see a Hanasaku Iroha dub or Sailor Moon Viz style uncut dub of Cardcaptor Sakura. I mean, people were barking at NIS's door about a Toradora dub for ages.

Also they're dubbing Love Live which I think is just great. Though Love Live is one of very few shows I've seen where the Japanese cast is so good that I can live without a dub, I'm glad it's happening all the same.

Looking back, very few of the anime I've watched have been dubbed. 80% of my top have not been dubbed. 50% of the anime my favorite characters are from haven't been dubbed. There are even anime I've watched that haven't even been subbed. Anime being dubbed is more of an exception than a rule.

SAO and Death Note have great dubs. I don't remember the voice acting in Naruto being all that good, but the only version I've heard a great deal of is the censored version that got broadcast on TV. Apparently the uncut dub is way better and Naruto himself is slightly less annoying.
