It was Natsuhi with the knife in the billiards room

Epic Clue moments aside, I thought it was a pretty interesting episode despite the introductions to a rather large cast of characters. I had to watch the intros twice to make sure who was who.

Maria's damn UUUUUUUUUU was pretty damn annoying. I was hoping for a dead loli by the end of the episode, but alas, it didn't happen.

What was this lack of BGM? Disgusting.

Fastpaced indeed, remains to see if that was a good move. My greatest fear (since lack-of-BGM already has occurred ;_;) is that the characters will miss lots of depth, like the Higurashi animation. Otherwise we got some sweet adoptions of them - especially Maria and Rosa was really well done.

Voice acting was godlike for many characters, albeit some (like Rudolf) wasn't anything near what I imagined.

Mixed feelings are mixed, but I'll follow this boat till the end.

EDIT: Oh yeah, OP was awesome, but not as awesome as I imagined. The ED was better than I expected though, and no matter what whoever says I'm in love with it. No complaints about OP or ED except for spoiler parts: They spoiled Beatrice OVER and OVER again in this episode...

Finally, I can understand Rosa when she's hitting Maria due to the "uu". I would hit her, too.
I wasn't too impressed by this first episode, Horie Yui for Maria and Kugyu for Shannon really turned out to be a bad choice.
The OP turned out to be better than I expected it to be, but I would still rather have had "Umineko no Naku Koro ni" as the OP.
Still, looking forward to the next episode.

It seems OK. It seems to attempt to jump into the suspense a little quickly, with family problems already showing up between the mother and daughter, and such, though.

I've expected more from it.

The story seemed to be slightly underdeveloped but it's only the pilot, so until we get the first kill that means nothing.

The characters were mostly OK. I loved Rosa and the way she outbursted on Maria. On the other hand, the characters of Maria and Battler. Maria was acting wierdly, I'll say more, retarded. When I have heard the sounds she was making I wanted to smack her off the screen not only on the ground. When it comes to Battler, well he just did not get to me at all.

I have no regreat to say this, but I hated most of the animation. Battler looks awkward if not awful. Most of the chracters suffer from the big blue/violet eyes syndrome which is not appealing at all. Furthermore some of the girls have breasts so big that it's a miracle they're not falling over. In my opinion extreme boobs and weird looking big eyes don't fit the theme of murder and mystery.

The background animation, was OK. Nothing stunning, though. We can see that in pretty much every anime these days.

The voice acting was a highlight of the episode, the chracters were very much alive. The only two that were below that standard were Maria and Battler as mentioned before.

With art being mediocre, unless the story becomes more appealing I'm going to dropp this in an instant.

Nothing great. The episode was a little rushed, but it was probably necessary. OP sucks. Animation quality decent, but not stunning. Blue eyes suck. At least Rosa and Maria saved the episode. IMHO, Beatrice with an umbrella in the garden was shown unnecessarily.

Now waiting for real subs (CoalGuys' don't count)
And also waiting for the 2nd ep and

What? Lack of BGM? I'll cry if they don't at least add worldenddominator or answer in the anime.

Wonder why they're going through this so quickly though. The four arcs themselves aren't too long, so it should be fine to slow down, right?

I've been waiting for this for a seriously long time, but it's too bad I've ended up a tiny bit disappointed. Only a bit though. I was really excited to watch this, even though in the end it felt pretty rushed. OP and ED were delicious enough. I'm also pretty satisfied with how most of the voice acting turned out. Overall, I enjoyed seeing Umineko animated very much.

It's funny how the anime OP animation fits so fell with the game OP. Maybe even better.

Leaving that aside, I can pretty much make a better analysis now.

Now, as a sound novel player, I did feel this as extremely rushed. Heck, even Battler's "OCHIRUUU OCHIRUUUU" could have lasted 5 seconds more. Some scenes even seemed ridiculous on how rushed they were. Eva vs. Natsuhi scene especially; I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that Natsuhi didn't even get to the room to start crying. Some things were even skipped, as to be expected (Shannon getting scolded anyone?). Disappointed a bit on the lack of commentary on the epitaph; but I guess they didn't want to drive attention at it until the scene when

On the other hand, knowing the story further, I can pretty much say that they did a great adaptation. Heck, Legend of the Golden Witch was about 40% introduction, and they managed to adapt more than half of this introduction in the first anime episode. If Legend is indeed 5 anime episodes long, than it wouldn't be wrong to assume that Turn is 6, Banquet is 7 and Alliance is 8, thus resulting in a 26 episodes anime. In other words: skipping certain scenes and rushing the rest was necessary, and I can pretty much cope with it.

Now, regarding OP and ED. Was expecting a bit more from the OP, they made Beatrice look sort of... apathetic? And Jessica is huuuge. But it was good nonetheless. ED pleasantly surprised me; it captured the feeling of impending doom much better. Loved how they showed the garden, the guest house, the mansion and even

I will now officially declare it:

Voice acting was also really good; especially from fanboy Kinzo. Kyrie's voice is nothing close to what I imagined it to be, but I guess I can get used to it. On the other hand, I'd slap my daughter too if she was 'Uuu'-ing in Horie Yui's voice.

Overrushed.

That is the first thing come to my mind after watch it. There are many scenes cut and the characters aren;t explained properly. The seiyuus and BGM was pretty much okay, but still, the problem is the too fastpaced plot.

I am a little bit dissapointed, but the OP is awesome ! Akiko Shikata really rocks !!

Okay, after finally watching the episode, I got pretty pissed.

I mean, I was hoping Yui Horie would do "uuu uuu" like she did with "Uguu". Bummer.

Anyways, outside of that, they went straight into the seriousness so early. Where like in Higurashi and the original novel of Umineko, it gave off a calm, natural atmosphere, that nothing could possibly go wrong. It does so at the beginning of every arc, surprisingly eve in Alliance of the golden witch where everyone would expect Battler being depressed, he's intentionally letting himself being teased by one of the sisters.

And of course you would freak the hell out if you were in front of the ship like that, rocking. They didn't show the airplane scene either. D:

I haven't played enough of the visual novel to say anything (only gotten to the point where this episode ends), but man this show just doesn't give me that mysterious atmosphere that Higurashi has, which kept me thinking wtf was going on.

Maybe I shouldn't compare the two really, but so far I really do think the show is slightly inferior compared to Higurashi.

Kinzou should have been voiced by Wakamoto. This voice does not carry his mad, intense willpower over very well at all.

And yes rushed, too little BGM, what is with the huge boobs, why did George lose weight, WHERE IS MY MACKEREL, et cetera. But I don't think Uu- was irritating at all, given what
it was more sad, I thought.

Not bad. Comparisons with original will be too cruel as of yet, of course.

Few things about this episode that annoyed me:

1. Pacing just felt off. It feels rushed, and it just jumped into the serious stuff right away. There wasn't enough character introduction as well imo.
2. Maria was just plain annoying. Seriously, if I were Rosa I'd hit her much harder than she did.
3. Something about the animation just bothers me for some reason. I don't really know what it is though.
4. It could have been better with more music.

Still, it's a decent episode, and considering this is just the very beginning of the series, I think it will still get better.

Not bad. OP is fabulous and ED would be too, if they had used someone who can sing.

Episode was more or less good and there seems to be a lot of potential, but:

- lame breast jokes - come on: this is totally out of place and makes the main character look totally pathetic right from the start
- I loved Ayu-Ayu's Uguuu~ but that huu~ is annoying as hell

Nevertheless I am going to follow this even when I am not particularly fond of the genre.

Well, as a non-VN reader, I didn't think it was rushed at all. As a first episode, it has to pull in the viewer so perhaps all the skipped scenes with Shannon and whatever, will be incorporated later.

Kaiserpingvin said:

Oh, this. His current voice isn't too bad, but Wakamoto would've been BRILLIANT.

The music that was used really added to the atmosphere, so I don't get all the complaining about that either. You don't need music EVERY SINGLE SECOND during a show. A little more would be nice, but it wasn't really that bad.

Seiyuu generally did a good job, Marina Inoue as Jessica, Ami Koshimizu as Rosa, and Suzumura Kenichi as George seemed perfect.
Rie Kugimiya as Shannon was absolutely fine. People should stop thinking KugiRie is always loltsundere.
Daisuke Ono as Battler felt a little off but, as a big Daisuke Ono fan, I think he'll manage.
Yui Horie as Maria just grated on my nerves. She really needs to improve her performance.
Itou Miki as Eva kept reminding me of Takano. It's a little weird.

Now, I really can't wait to see what Sayaka Ohara does for Beatrice. I have very high expectations.

I wasn't really interested in this show after reading the plot description but I'm glad I watched the first episode. It's surprisingly entertaining and quite enjoyable.

The animation and character design don't really appeal to me but it's still ok. The plot seems interesting, with a supernatural feel to it.

I'm guessing those who think it's rushed are the ones that are familiar with the visual novel. I for one didn't read it so I can't really judge but I don't feel this episode's pacing is too fast at all. I hate long introduction episode with nothing happening, and besides, VNs are always slow and boring.

I found Maria kind of cute at the beginning. Then her uuuhh~ became... disturbing. What's more disturbing is the scene where her mom goes into "I are angry" mode and starts hitting her. Just can't stand to see an adult hit a child, whether it's fiction or not. -_-

I honestly don't see why so many people think that this was rushed. One of my biggest worries about this adaptation was that they were going to drag out the introduction too much. I mean, really, did you want five episodes of nothing but talking? I'm actually pleased that red paint events will possibly be in the next episode.

As far as animation is concerned, I'm pleased that it looks decent. Most of the people here complaining about it either haven't played the novel, or are expecting a perfect adaptation psh hahahahah good luck. A few minor things are noticeable, like George being slightly slimmer, but, really, it makes sense when taking into consideration

Voice acting was actually a lot better than I had worried it might be. I couldn't quite tell due to her few lines, but Kyrie's voice sounded a bit too feminine, I thought, and perhaps Genji's voice was a bit too gar-sounding, but, really, it's great considering how many other times that there's horrible voice-acting in a visual novel adaptation.

As far as the soundtrack is concerned, I did not expect all that much to be played just yet. It's the opening, after all, and most of the awesome tracks start after hell breaks loose, anyway. The opening and credits were nice, though the credits were better, and, really, I don't pay attention to the openings' animations- or the credits', for that matter.

All in all, I'm pleasantly surprised by the first episode. My main worries- the art, voice actors, and pacing- seem to have been taken care of. I'm looking forward to next week's episode.

If you continue the anime (or the VN) you'll see that this in some ways is much better than Higurashi. The only way I can think of that would make someone like Higurashi better is if they just like it for the "KILLERLOLILULZ" which Umineko doesn't have. In other words, I agree that you shouldn't be comparing Higurashi and Umineko.

I don't know why so many people are dissatisfied with Maria's voice. Its purpose is to piss off people and Horie-san just succeeds it. Also I don't think the pace is too slow because if it was a bit slower there is a guarantee that it can be boring. Still, there are loads and loads of characters. Since this is the first episode there is not really much to rate or to discuss. (But this is a discussion thread for the 1st episode, so yeah.)

Seconded. Thank you two for putting my thoughts into words. And here I was thinking I was the only one who didn't find Maria and her Uu~ annoying.

Actually I consider Horie Yui's performance as Maria to be one of the better parts of this episode. If it got a reaction out of you, it more than likely served its purpose.

I thought the first episode was pretty good but have to agree mostly on the pacing problems. I understand that jumping right into everything is nice to advance the story but the characters don't have much personality or back story to them... yet.

Of course in standard Ryukishi07 fashion there has to be the obligatory frighteningly knowledgeable loli. As well as a mysterious curse/misfortune/prophecy made known very quickly... that's good that they can jump right into that. I haven't played the visual novel so the story is still unfamiliar to me (I need to read the manga soon), so a lot of stuff in this episode was pretty intriguing to me. Just to name a few of what I'm sure will become very important later in the series and very interesting would be the hidden gold (duh) and the mysterious golden butterflies (possibly having something to do with the gold?).

Anyway with having only seen the first episode I have fairly high hope for this series and it appears that they will be met... if only they could address the few problems I have with the lack of character development (I might just have to check out the drama CDs which would be disappointing considering a lot of people won't/so they will be missing out on a lot).

I'm amazed that I didn't notice it was her voicing Shannon XD I don't remember her voicing a formal, low speaking characters before so that might be it.

That aside, I was kinda expecting the opening from the game but this opening is amazing too. As for the ending... it's pretty cool, until the guy starts singing ~_~;
And I agree with the "needs more BGM" part.

I just read some chapters of the manga and since I didn't play the game I think it wasn't that rushed and for the same reasons I won't say anything about character designs. As for Maria... I like Yui Horie but... geez that "uuu" was damn annoying though it's probably better this way than a Hanyuu kind of way, since I don't think Maria is supposed to sound like Hanyuu because the, I guess there's a reason for Maria to sound like that and a reason to make the "uuu" sound to begin with, like some kind of trauma or something, she doesn't do that to sound cute, but that's my opinion. Also, her being in psycho mode in the opening reminded me of Rena XD
I want to see more Beatrice (and the witches in general), she seemed nice (for the time being XD) since she gave Maria the umbrella.

Well, we have Alphonse Elric, who is polite if not formal, at least.

I don't see how anyone could call Jimang a bad singer. One might not like his peculiar timbre, but he knows how to sing, fershure. It's kind of like Kate Bush; she might be hard to dig timbrewise, but she do know how to sing.
