Not in the vein of psychological animus, of course, but it surely was a nice thread on human development. And I lol'd at the radio scene. One of the best episodes so far, imho. |

| lol i loved the part in the VERY beginning where Yukari freaked out in the car X'D i couldn't stop thinking about it haha... oh and ARRANGED MARRIAGE?! wow that's surprising!!! lol the whole bar thing was awesome... oh and i loved Chiyo-chan running in the dark and then being all happy in the light XD oh and poor Tearfullittledietgirl! i think its cute though ^^ anyway great epi! |

Well, it's weird to have you saying this here because this is probably the most nicely-drawn episode of Azumanga. The scene at the restaurant and the conversations below the cherry blossoms are among the most beautiful shots in the series; and the use of lights, shades and colours was surprisingly varied for the general quality of the show. This is much likely my favorite episode of Azumanga Daioh, maybe just behind the 12th, maybe not, it just depends on the day. It's so mature, for a light school comedy it surprisingly has pretty solid and realistic conflicts. As I said somewhere, the biggest quality of this episode is how it seems to be aware of real problems in Japanese society. The inner conflict of Nyamo about her purpose in life, with the pressure to get a husband, to progress and dismiss her actual employment, is so well-written and interesting, I think it makes a good summary of what a 30-year-old Japanese woman finds in her daily life and how it affects her objectives to the point of forcing her to get married and get a "better" job to be fulfilled in life. It's interesting how Nyamo feels like she's still immature by remaining single and teaching in a high school. Apart from that, Kagura in this episode is given a quite interesting share of depth and that makes her interactions with the rest even more enjoyable, even in retrospect. It was a great idea to confront the rest of the girls with her, to show how they tend to live separated from the dynamics of the competitive school system. It is true that no one of them joined a club in the whole series, and they seem to never be worried about their future... until this episode comes and somebody (Kagura) shows them that this is going to finish one day. Such a powerful premise. This episode is the only one that is completely original from the manga. For that reason, I think it deserves even more respect. It adds several layers of complexity to its characters, and in a way, serves to understand many of the interactions that are shown through the whole series. If there is one episode that justifies the whole experience of Azumanga, it's this one. A great 10/10. |

| Great post, reeses, I pretty much agree with everything you posted. reeses said: I think Nyamo's refusal to change jobs, even for a better one, is kind of the key here. I don't think she likes things to change, especially when she's very content, and which is why she doubts the idea of an arranged marriage once Yukari tells her that she has her own choices in life. Now that I think about it, during her drunken rant at the beach house, she said it was better to live alone. I sort of see them just focusing on their careers and stuff for their lives, which is what a lot of people seem to do now, and still find real contentment anyways. I don't know where did I read it, but there was a review on this episode that basically defended the idea that the main reason why Nyamo appreciated her friendship with Yukari was because she envied her lifestyle and philosophy. That is, while Nyamo is more grounded in reality, worried about the future, and more influenced by the canons of society, Yukari is a careless free spirit, somebody who doesn't care about any of those things and just lives the present. Nyamo to some extent envies this attitude, she also would like to live without any bonds nor obligations, yet she isn't able to get rid of the social and family pressure. reeses said: Also makes me curious about Eiko. Is she married? Living the single good life? She seems to be pretty well off, given her job and all. I'm also curious as if this episode is about personal views of the author in regards to tradition and all that. I assumed, not only that Eiko had a job, but that she was married. I could be wrong, though. In any way, she, as a character, represented the result of making "good" and "responsible" decisions in life, she was what Nyamo feels forced to become. I can't really say if this is a personal perception of the author, though. The episode at all, and its main conflicts, is not adapted from the manga but created originally for the anime... But I think both the manga and the anime seem to be focused on a carpe diem-like philosophy instead of the plans and concerns about the future that are usually present in their situation, in fact this episode also talks about how the girls hadn't yet thought about their lives after high school. That is, while the school system is extremely competitive, they don't seem to care at all about grades, clubs, popularity (except maybe Chiyo, and I'd bet it's for family pressure too)... they just want to have fun and make the most of their moments together. |

| I really love this episode. Every time I rewatch this series, it's interesting how much more I relate to Nyamo and Yukari, which is expected as you get older, I suppose. The thing is, I never had the time of day to feel free in high school. I was always studying or doing something to find my "purpose" in life. There were some good times, but it didn't take me until the last semester of senior year to try to enjoy the moment. I had a couple years of community college, but after going to uni things felt very... constrained like in high school but even worse, considering the pressure of how much it cost. I thank my lucky stars I got through with a degree and now a career I enjoy. It helped me weed out all the things that made me so unhappy on top of school. (Which was a major overhaul in every sense.) The point is, I think for a lot of people, finding your "purpose" in life is so draining in terms of societal expectations. I hardly thought I'd be where I am, but after careful reflection and hard work, I feel comfortable to finally live in the moment, and that's something to cherish. This episode is beautiful because living in the moment is something we are often trained not to do, in a world of competition and goals. |

| I too yawned... and I have never done this w 3D yawns... はかない；ー； gave me feels... idk what i'm doing this summer or what I want to achieve in general... rlly like this show's unique feel and general comf but also the interspersed melancholy and contemplative moments w themes abt growing up and just passing time and finding ur place w friends and goals that are stressful and motivating and seem both incredibly important and minimal in the scheme of things and just ughhh idk man also rip ダイエット少女ちゃん... がんばります！！ |
| Such a strangely hypnotic episode. Like, you don't expect a lighthearted comedy that came from a 4koma to get this... I dunno, deep? Philosophical? It was a strange punch in the gut thematically. I almost wanna say it was like a kind of whiplash, but it didn't feel out of place. It felt like all the characters kinda took a step back, just for a moment, to make sure you're getting the message. I suppose on the surface that message is, "don't waste your youth", but it feels a little more nuanced than that. There's something to be said perhaps about how the more things change, the less things change. I can't quite decipher the greater point of all this, maybe because this is the first time I've watched through this series as a whole, or maybe because it's two in the morning. In any case, I really enjoyed that; I love these sleepy atmospheres. Late summer nights, lying in bed staring at the ceiling with faint lights shining through your window, the only thing keeping you company are your thoughts. I love those vibes, and the scenes with Tomo just chilling in Yomi's bedroom were kinda like that. As I said, the whole episode was... hypnotic. I liked it. |

| A spring night, full of a mellow thoughts. We get a separated girls, doing their brain-storming, alone, or accompanying with the others. I felt a bit slow down, watching their interaction. Some feels sad, the others still fun as always, and another just being a cutie pie even in the middle of the night. The two teacher try to seek some future events. The other girls searched the meaning of the freedom. Mmh, their interaction, all were wonderful. Below the blossom tree, some talked, pouring every feelings in the heart. In a quite room, some girls mingled. Nice to see they were back in good terms again, when the previous episode feel a bit irked for the other girls. Above the bridge, some adults gone crazy refusing their future, trying hard to seeks a better plan, but ended with failure. Another? A freedom means slept. The others just act cool while reading some cute book. Thats it. A bit sad seeing all of them. But, its actually nice to seeing something different from this show. A bit mellow drama goes into another level. Azumanga Daioh succeeded to bring such a feelings, and end it well with more comedic way (Osaka, what are you doing??) to finish what they started. Amazing direction! |

| Damnit. I didn't want to watch this to have a mini-existential crisis about growing up (school and uni days are long behind me now (≧﹏ ≦) ). I wanted to watch this to laugh about a bunch of friends in awe over a magnificent yawn several times through the episode and yawning along each time. |

| Chiyo's facial expressions were hilarious. Overall, I didn't like this episode at all. Ayumu's yawn and that Little Tearful Diet Girl were pretty much the only good things in this episode. All those conversations about marriages and guys were so annoying. |
