The novel is, at least as far as I can tell having only ever read the manga, decent. Shaft's adaptation was terrible because every episode looked like it was made on a budget of 50 USD, of which at least 45 were spent buying various psychedelic substances for Akiyuki Shinbo's use. | I guess you could consider Monogatari pretentious because its fairly avant-garde in its presentation. Combined with some pseudo-intellectual bullshit like the whole fake being more real than the real thing and I can see it coming off as pretentious. But at the same time its a harem with lolis, incest and fan service so it kinda nullifies the pretentiousness. |

It could come off as bit pseudo-intellectual because the whole hyperreality and simulacrum bits are thrown in and aren't really explored to that much depth, mostly because Nise was apparently a brain dump for the author so it might not even be intentionally there. I'm not hating on Monogatari, its my favorite show, but I can definitely see an argument for it being pretentious although I think that mostly hinges on the art an animation and less so the content. |

I'll bite the bait One Piece has a well thought out story that has continuity as well as planning. fairy Tail is just one random arc after the next and with an overarching story of dragons/an evil wizard that gets crammed in whenever convenient. The characters in OP are silly because it's a mostly lighthearted adventure. fairy Tail's characters are silly because sex and stock characters sell. |
