....it was okay............ I was really hyped over this anime, because I'm a fan of the manga. The animation was kinda dull and dark.

I also think Hanakana is a mis-cast for the role of Rize. It doesn't match at all.

Whoa, this first episode of Tokyo Ghoul was really something, quite messed up but man I'm intrigued. So Rize's organs were transferred to Ken and now he's part Ghoul. Ghoul's eat humans and normal human food taste disgusting to them. Man, feel so bad for Ken. Touka's also a ghoul too! Man that last scene where it's just Ken and Touka was my favourite. The OP song by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure sounds great too. Looking forward to more Tokyo Ghoul. It's a shame to hear that things have been rushed though. D:

I knew I was going to like this show. The hardest thing is that Kaneki still has his human emotions. It's not going to be easy for him to live a life as a Ghoul.

Touka is pretty cool.

5/5 for the first episode.

This first episode was really good. Being just half a ghoul seems going to be really hard in the long run. The part where he was forced feed reminded me of snk where Misaka forced Erin to eat bread.

I'll admit, before watching this anime, I saw the hype of it's release over the internet and I was kinda worried it would end up being some mediocre craze like K or Noragami, however I was pleasantly surprised by how good this first episode was.
I really liked the opening scene, I thought it made it that much more intense from the get go and instantly engaged you. I really liked the art and music, especially the ED theme. I really hope the next episode continues to deliver the same amount of interesting themes and art.
Also A+ voice acting from Kana Hanazawa as always, she's just amazing. <3

Can't wait for next week now! I hope I won't be disappointed.

meh i guess i liked it. Hated that it was censored, honestly the part where kaneki is trying to eat normal food was more gruesome than any of the bloody scenes. It felt pretty rushed, I thought they would have ended the first episode when kaneki wakes up and you see his one ghoul eye. It was also weird that they showed Jason in the beginning of the episode, I thought he would get introduced much later. Really liked that it ended with that gulp tho.

I dont think its going to be a 12-13 Episode anime. My reason being is because in the trailer it showed Kaneki on some platform that is similar to him standing on in chapter 128 Page 2. It should be around 34 seconds in the video.

I like you optimism that it will be more than 13 episodes. From what we seen so far, the extra original scene of Rize with ??? ghoul (anime original addon) and cramming of 5 chapters (also chapter 1 and 2 are 70 pages +) into 20ish minutes, it is likely that cram like 70 chapters of material into one season and some kind of anime original ending.

The end was particularly well done.

idk for the manga ppl complaining how the pacing in the manga was just right and the anime was too fast.... 5 chapters to get to the point in the anime's first episode sounds pretty long and boring to me .Even if there were world building details skipped out on this episode doesn't mean that they can't take place later on.

Yup, they absolutely cut scenes from the manga. He met Toka again before the incident with Nishiki, it was then she asked him about his eye and Kaneki he even begs her to help him with the food situation and she actually gave him some. Along with other stuff they cut out involving Nishiki, as well as the coffee situation. That's why this felt quite rushed. I hope the adaptation as whole isn't though.

Still, solid first episode. Will definitely keep watching.

To be honest, it's really hard for me to rate this higher than 3/5 right now... I mean, I really liked the gore and some of the animation was pretty decent. I loved the part when he was being driven mad in the middle of the street- craving human flesh.

Besides that, everything was very predictable in this episode. I basically knew exactly what was going to happen right after he made the observation that his ghoul girlfriend refused to eat her food during their date. After that, it pretty much went downhill from there. It's got the visuals down pat, but plot-wise it really hasn't completely got me hooked. I'll continue it though. The plot may thicken later on, but this is my first impression of this show.

Also, the characters are, of course, looking to be the usual generic anime stereotypes. How depressing (especially the girl with her one eye covered by hair...I don't even remember their names). Hope it gets better!

(Also, the ending reminds me of Attack on Titan, when Mikasa force-feeds Eren bread. That's all I could think of when I saw that scene, except it was like a blob of blood??? That's right, I am particular with how blood is animated)

Um, well... Considering they chopped up the first chapters of the manga to bits it wasn't too bad.I'm still really disappointed though, because this kind of shows it's not going to be a long series.
Oh, and I didn't like what they did with Rize. I mean yes she was always a busty, pretty monster chick but the fanservice lol... Rather than being freaky she was more like some nightmare fetishists dream come true. Maybe I'm being harsh though.

The animation was really nice to watch though and I thought the acting was pretty damn nice.

But when I saw Yamori at the start I think my soul shattered.

It'll be nice for horror fans anyways

You're not understanding. They removed a lot of content, and changed/mixed scenes just to get where it is right now. Majority of that can't come later at all. I believe that from all the content they removed, approximately 4 chapters worth only 1 chapter content can be used later (Note that 1st and 2nd chapter of a manga are extended and so they have together the same content has 4 normal chapters. So basically the anime used 7 chapters content worth to this episode, while they should use 2.5(the 1st chapter), 3(1 chapter and some of the 2nd) or in the extreme 4 chapters(the 1st and the 2nd chapter) of content).

For you to get a glimpse of what they removed, changed and mixed together see this, one of many examples: Touka meeting with Kaneki, after he becomes a ghoul.
In the anime he meets with her only 1 time, but in the manga he meets with her 3 times. In the anime when they meet:
- He founds out that she is a ghoul as well
- she offers him a human arm for him to eat.
- she notices that he is Rize prey from last time
- she notices he only has one ghoul eye
- He begs her for help
- He rejects to eat humans
- She forces him to eat it

In the magna:
1st meeting(end of 2nd chapter and beginning of the 3rd chapter)
- She kills a human right in front of him(Yep, this happens).
- He founds out that she is a ghoul as well
- She offers a human arm for him to eat
- She notices he only has one ghoul eye
- She notices that he is Rize prey from last time
- He runs away scared by the revelation that Touka the girl of the coffeehouse is also a Ghoul
- She get Angry about all of it
(Note: This would be a great ending for this episode!)

2nd meeting(end of 3rd chapter)
- After some time from the 1st meeting, he goes to the coffeehouse right after closing
- He begs her for help
- She rejects helping him
- they have a conversation that can be used later. Let's hope this happens. The conversation is quite important
- He is helped by someone, given human meat. That someone forces her to help him henceforth.
(Note: of course he doesn't eat it.)

3rd meeting(end of 5th chapter)
- After the events with the other two ghouls(I'm talking of what happened in the anime as well)
- He talks with her about the world of ghoul being the worst and that he basically will die from starvation(The anime shortens that conversation with the part of him screaming that he is human and that he will not eat)
- She forces him to eat (notice that she only helps because she is forced)

They turned 3 important events, that put relevance in different things, into 1 event and by that they removed the relevance of every of those things except the two last ones, he rejecting to eat and her forcing him to eat.
What about the revelation that she is a ghoul?
What about she finding he was Rize target?
What about her realization of his only one ghoul eye?
What about her being angry about him?
What about his begging?
What about her rejecting him?
What about her being forced to help him?
All of those things loose impact because they are all crammed together with each other and by the last meeting or because of the changes they made they were totally removed.

That was pretty cool, tbh.
I got a whole Shiki vibe from the episode, with how the lines between ghoul and human were blurred.

Pacing was great. Loved the animation - dark and disjointed, really enhancing the desperation of the scene. Also loved the voice work.
There's not much mystery to this, which I thought there would be...but that's totally okay.

Definitely around the top of this season so far, but much hasn't come out yet.

I was expecting the gore, so thankfully I didn't freak out about it. Although I had to pause when he was about to jam the kitchen knife into his abdomen...needed to prepare myself, lol.

Pretty solid first episode. Apparently there's lots of "rules" about ghoul territory, so that'll be interesting to find out about. I wish we could have gotten more exposition about the MC's life though...all we know is that he's an orphan and a bookworm. Not too interesting. I hope he stays in touch with his BFF...he seems to provide some needed comic relief.
Now this is a show I can't wait for.

I'm really not sure how to feel about this. Half of the time I was laughing when I probably should have felt bad for the protagonist (when Rize was killing him, and especially when he was puking). Though it was definetly an interesting start and it felt like the episode ended all too soon.

Most of those points you put out at the end were for the most part covered in this episode. As with all "ADAPATIONS" there will be some things cut and some things modified in order to fit a certain amount of content into an anime episode.

"What about the revelation that she is a ghoul?" Can this not be shown later? From the way this episode played out, the studio is clearly trying to emphasize the deprived state the Kaneki is in, in order to make this certain events flow easier, to just cut to "OH MY GOD SHES A GHOUL" and back to rejecting human flesh seems unnecessary and clearly this shock can be shown in perhaps episode 2? For your second question, wasn't there a slight shock where she realized he was Rize's victim?? Why are you skipping over this. Same for your third question, didn't Toka also point that out? A direct translation from the show: "Then again only one of your eyes is different..." Your fourth question... does this have to happen before? What DIFFERENT effect would it have, if this happens after this episode (presumably episode 2?). As for his begging, was he not begging at the end of the episode for help from her? And again, who says that the rejecting of help cannot be shown later on?

If you still don't get the point that I'm trying to make then I'll spell it out: manga does not translate linearly into an anime. For all you know those minor details you pointed out could be presented in episode 2. In terms of keeping the story flowing in a nice fashion, I think the anime adaptation so far managed to do that. You have to understand that keeping the events the same way as it was in the manga could have taken too long and would be quite dull/boring. The reason why it works well in manga is because reading a chapter is significantly faster than watching a 20-25 minute episode of animation. However I do agree that there may be some subtle differences, but overall these details can be put in later and have the same effect, only slightly different.

But again, for the most part, this episode DID show Kaneki's desperate call for help, as well as Toka realizing that he was Rize's victim, his one eye, etc...

With that being said, I enjoyed the episode, and will wait until later to see how it pans out, it's only episode 1 after all.

Question tho, when Toka said why is your eye like that, does this mean that one eye cant return to its original human look hence he wears an eye patch? Cause that sucks lol, and the MC is pretty generic so far, then again I guess anyone would have reacted that way :P

The way they made it seem is that he loses control of himself and goes into "ghoul mode" while hungry. So it may be a preventative measure more than anything else (from people realizing he is a ghoul).

As someone who loves the manga, this was so good. That said, I don't expect anime adaptations to be exact representations on the manga... Many on mal don't seem to get that and bitch up a storm. The manga isn't going anywhere. So enjoy the ride.
