I'm only watching this anime because the name "Urobuchi" is mentioned AND it's an anime original; but hey it looks decent enough. Hopefully it proves to be a good Summer anime since those are few and far between IMO.

No they said they want to surpass Gundam even though I'm not sure what the metric for that would even be or how long they expect this thing to last. I just chalk it up to typical Aniplex hyping BS that'll ultimately prove to just be about marketing buzz like they do for everything. So far really all it seems like they do is mash up popular names, tropes and ideas to try to pull in as many demographics as possible and then just throw a lot of money at the show and especially at marketing and try to score a hit. The show looks like it might be alright, but then who knows, you can say that about almost anything just based on a trailer. It could just be yet another Aniplex show that is meant to be a flashy blockbuster and "cutting edge" but ends up being something that fills 24 episodes of content and then just ends.

The OST is generic as hell but then Sawano is so run into the ground at this point that that's hardly surprising.

I'm interested in this series because of the big-three attached to it. Urobutcher, Sawano, and Aoki.

Thing is... I didn't notice it before but..

Takayama Katsuhiko (Series Composition) did the scripts for Boku no Pico and its three sequels.

What a world we live in.

Someone wrongly credited Slain(e)'s voice actor. He's being voiced by Kensho Ono, not Yuki Ono.

If they want to compete with the Gundam franchise they can't do full CG mecha. That alone is going to hamper a lot of interest.

That's how Aniplex gets you. Big claims (will surpass Gundam), big names (Urobuchi, Shinbo, Aoki, Sawano, Kaijura, Araki), and a whole lot of empty promises and disappointment at the end. Hopefully people have learned their lesson by now to take thing with a grain of salt during the promotional phase of anything they do.

Yep. I just confirmed it by looking up the kanji. I posted this in the news thread as well. Hope it gets updated.

More mecha is always good. And from Urobochi. Wonder how involved is he in this one? Like in Gargantia (basically only chapters 1 and 13)?

Shimura Takako on the character designs. Knew they looked familiar.

It's funny.. As of now, this looks better than the recently announced 35th anniversary Gundam series announcements.

It has good staff, it has a unique character designs, and it is being backed by A-1. (Which isn't always the best thing... but they can have great animation when it counts.)

I'm looking forward to this.

Last time that Aniplex tried to make a bleeding edge show that they figured would be the next big thing by throwing popular names into a blender on all fronts Guilty Crown was the result we got and boy was it a mess. I don't see any reason why I should expect this to be any different right now since it's basically raising all the same flags Guilty Crown did when they were trying to hype the shit out of it. Just don't want to get fooled again.

People figure just because this staff worked on some popular and well-received shows in the past this show is guaranteed to be great, but a lot of things look and sound good on paper only to turn out not so good in application. It's so blatant that the producers are trying to bank off the popularity of the staff from their work on Fate/Zero and some other really popular stuff in the community they've worked on recently that I have to wonder how well they've thought beyond that which quite often doesn't seem to be the case. It's very typical for Aniplex to just get all these popular names and hype the shit out of a show before the start of the season thrusting those popular names in peoples faces and then forget to actually put anything into make the show good enough to sustain itself in the absence of all the hype. Cynical commercialism over actually quality content.

I'm taking a very cautious approach with this one and while I'm interested I'm not planning on giving it any particular extra special consideration with the number of times I've been burned by the Aniplex approach before. Just so sick and disgusted of how much they try to hype everything up and always take this approach and like 9 times out of 10 the show turns out to be disposable trash.

Different Studio, Different Writer, Different Director, etc.
And the staff of Guilty Crown wasn't anything special, the director is the same of Death Note and the writers from Code Geass, and that is it.
The staff is far more better than that.

The staff looks really good, but the PV does feel a bit underwhelming to me and I'm not really into mecha anime. I wonder if they're gonna face backlash if this ends up being a flop, with the claims they're making about this series.

Same producer and that's all that really matters at the end of the day. The show itself is going to have to prove it's as good as they've been hyping it up to be as they always do if I'm ever going to be particularly impressed here, but for me throwing the same old popular names they always do at my face is not enough. I hope for their sake their actually focused on making the show good and not just their favorite list of credits again.

Not even remotely surprised. I knew they'd find some way to include Kajiura too since she's the only remaining name left off the list whenever Aniplex is trying to hype people up over a show. Literally the only name missing from their usual stable is Akiyuki Shinbo, but I think tossing Ei Aoki into the role of director kind of precludes that cause now they can add "From the director of Fate/Zero" as part of the hype campaign.
