It happens to almost everyone, seeing people saying "OMG this anime is so sad, so heartbreaking etc", you watch it and it's a bit dramatic but nothing more than that, and definitely not a tearjerker. I think the most overrated drama anime is Hotarubi no Mori e. It's a dramatic story, sure, but I've seen people comparing it to CLANNAD ~AFTER STORY~, and I think that's ridiculous. Ιt's so short that you can barely attach yourself to the characters, let alone feel sad for them. What anime do you think are hyped for their drama but aren't really worth it, and why? |

Definitely Angel Beats! The ending was supposed to be sad, but I just ended up laughing. Very disappointing. |

I don't really know any shows that were suppose to be sad, But I found some death scenes in shows that were suppose to be sad not that sad at all. Hotarubi no Mori e was quite sad and actually can still make you feel sad after watching it. sad-overdose |

Another anime that I think is tremendously overrated for its drama is 5 centimeters per second. I get that what I'm watching is supposed to be sad but I don't actually feel sad... plus it's not like anyone died or something, they just broke up and randomly met on a train stations after 13 years, nothing to sob over. Kruszer said: I usually avoid things that are generally agreed to be depressing since I generally hate works like those so..... You've seen AnoHana, Clannad/Clannad After Story and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0... what are you avoiding? :P Mod Edit: Merged duplicated posts; please use the edit button. |

Spoilers, sort of. I will forever cry tears of laughter. I tend to find anime that aren't structured around being 'dramatic' to be more sad than ones that depend on it. |

Little Busters. Maybe it'll just be the anime. Still holding out for EX/ME to be translated, which will probably come out around the same time as Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (never). |

RahXephon. Only episode 19 lived up to the hype, the rest was just a moe harem anime with unintentional comedy. |

Grave of the Fireflies - it was definitely a good watch with a compelling message, but a far cry from the end of the world that it was chalked up to be. |

The usual: Clannad, Anohana, Air, Angel Beats!. All were very underwhelming and not outstanding in anyway (except in being boring). I find the best anime when it comes to being sad are those that incorporate multiple genres, so you can still be interested while the melodrama is going on and actually care for the characters. |

Angel Beats! had one episode I thought was sad, and a lot of moments that tried REALLY hard to be sad but failed. But the one that was the most 'meh'? The first season of Clannad. And to an extent, a lot of After Story, although it had some legitimately sad parts. I dunno, it felt so melodramatic, like it really wanted to be sad, and wound up being laughable. Almost everything that's supposed to be really sad winds up being a little disappointing. The saddest things are usually unexpected, or more subtle, than having lots of crying and whatnot. |

Anohana had a touching story but it was a tad too melodramatic to leave me in tears. The romance in Angel Beats felt too forced (Probably a result of all the scenes they had to cut out) so while the emotional scenes were handled well I was just sitting there stone faced. Also not that I expected to be moved by the show in the first place since I went in thinking it was going to be something completely different (For example, something that wasn't shit). But all the emotional scenes in Mirai Nikki were really manipulative, cringeworthy and sometimes even despicable in their execution. I'm fine with suspending my disbelief a little when watching anime but often times the characters I was supposed to be sympathising with did worse things than some of the characters they painted as irredeemable psychopaths. |

AnoHana - every character in it behaved like a retard from start to finish so I couldn't help but not care about their problems also Angel Beats ending was rushed and bland as hell edit: Hotarubi no Mori e didn't make me feel a thing either edit2: not to mention Byousuke 5 Centimeter, I have no idea how people found that one touching at all |

Victory gundam, I kept hearing over and over again that its the most depressing in the entire franchise and had the undisputed highest body count in the whole series as well. The show actually had alot more calm and relaxing light hearted moments that were not present in the first 2 series and while the body count was through the roof it seemed to almost only apply to the side character count. Compared to zeta which killed off so many of the most important characters in 2 episodes seeing so many people survive victory really didnt sell through the depressing hype of it -Katsu-kun- said: yeah the character design in that series is bad, even the fans will admit that, i just kind of got used to it eventually but they really could had done a much better jobClannadQs said: -Katsu-kun- said: The character design? Hotarubi was very good for what it was, It made me feel a lot for the characters, since it only has two of them for 45 mins, I think its enough time to make you like just 2 characters. Plus i presonally thought that while a small scaled one It had a decent story, and likable personalities. It was better than most same time anime out there. |
