Such a sad yet beautiful episode.
I am so happy that Okabe and Kurisu finally expressed their love. That kiss scene was probably one of the best I've seen in anime and completely reminded me off Toradora from how Okabe said "once more" to how Kurisu was standing on the tips of her toes :)

I seriously believe Okabe can save her now since it is obviously not over yet with the whole WW3 thing happening now. Please save Kurisu. Onegai!!

Wait, how did deleting the message actually shift the world line by itself? All they did was delete the message in the present. That makes no sense.

THIS X INFINITY

can someone explain why deleting the data from SERN's database sent Okabe to another world line? how does that retroactively delete the tracing data? i understand that sending the first text changed the timeline drastically and made it so Kurisu wasn't murdered, but how does using the IBN5100 and deleting data switching things?

They deleted their informations in SERN's database since they picked up the very first d-mail (the one in EP1) that Daru accidently sent. By deleting their informations from SERN's database will reconstruct the past where SERN doesn't know that they are experimenting with a time machine, also preventing them from completing one since they don't raid the FGL. That also prevents Mayuri's death and the future doesn't become a dystopia due to SERN's monopoly on time machines, which causes a huge divergence. Result? The change was so big (I mean, preventing a dystopia) that they've switched attractor fields, and in that attractor field, Mayuri doesn't die because SERN doesn't stalk the FGL and doesn't raid it, so they can't complete their time machine. Kurisu is stabbed, and instead of a dystopia, WWIII happens in the future of Attractor Field Beta.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember them actually undoing their first d-mail. After getting Mr. Braun's phone, they undid Moeka's d-mail. That resulted in a timeline shift to the world in which they still have the IBN 5100. They then used that computer to hack into SERN and delete the info from the database.
So logically, shouldn't they just stay in that world-line? SERN can't stalk FGL because the info is gone, which prevents Mayuri's death as well as the development of SERN's own time machine. Kurisu would also still be alive, since they would have stayed in the world-line in which she survives. Since SERN doesn't develop a time machine, and Kurisu's father doesn't get his hands on her paper on time machines, this scenario would prevent both the dystopia and WWIII.

The first d-mail is very important, but didn't have to be undone like the other ones. That d-mail is the first that SERN picked up. By deleting the d-mail infomation from the database basically means that they've never picked it up. Since SERN doesn't have any info about d-mails and the FGL, they are unaware of them. Thus, they never complete their time machine because they never raid the FGL and force Makise Kurisu to complete SERN's time machine. Because of that, the future is drastically changed (SERN doesn't rule the world), and the change is so major that it caused the world to jump to the beta attractor field (where Makise Kurisu dies.) A major change like this was only possible in specific moments in time, such as in 2010 where SERN is supposed to force Makise Kurisu to finish the time machine.

The scenario you're talking about is pretty much the Steins;Gate World Line, and that world line isn't affected by any attractor field. Doctor Nakabachi never returns to Russia with the paper on time machines, nor does SERN pick up the first d-mail sent by Daru since it is never sent.

the thing that's confusing is that what seems is implied is that no matter how many d-mails he deletes, mayuri dies in some way, NOT NECESSARY THROUGH SERN. this is known because no matter how much he tries to run, mayuri will die, e.g. when she gets tackled into a train.

deleting tracing data, as a previous poster mentioned, would stop SERN from following them on episode 22's timeline from that time onward, and i could see how that would make it so that the future is changed drastically, but how does that retroactively change the past in some way?

so, I'm ju7st gonna copy paste the answers from the material book. You guys can start debating from there.

"Q25. Here’s something that bothered many players… Why did the timeline shift just because they wiped a log entry from the Echelon database?
A. John Titor mentions in one of his @Channel posts that if a significant event is changed at any point on a timeline, history will re-construct itself and thus, changing the events that happens following that point in the timeline which, is what happened in this case."

This is not a spoiler since we already passed episode 22.

^By deleting the D-mail log entry from the Echelon in 17 Aug, the history from 28 Jul to 17 Aug has been rewritten - it doesn't matter whether SERN has already noticed the D-mail. They explained that as the D-mail is "heretical and outside the cycle of causality", simple interference of the D-mail like deleting can cause a dramatic change in divergence.

If that explanation is canon, all I can say is that I'm really disappointed.

Basically it's Suzuha and Daru's fault.
Here's some explanation that I took from 4chan:

1. Delete the mail data from Echelon.
2. SERN's higher ups don't find out about the FG Lab.
3. Mayuri doesn't die.

2034
4. SERN doesn't complete the time machine by 2034.
5. SERN doesn't form a dystopia.

6. Daru doesn't get killed before fully completing the time machine.
7. Suzuha doesn't use a faulty time machine.

2010
8. Suzuha's time machine doesn't crash into Radio Kaikan.
9. Nakabachi's time machine conference doesn't get canceled from due to any satellite crashes.
10. Kurisu dies

In another words, the future without dystopia changes the past because Suzuha now have her father and he can build a full time machine and will not crash in the building where Kurisu will get killed.

jk ignore all my posts, this is freakin genius. my fault for not reading the pages long enough, but i cannot believe how complex this is and how this makes everything make sense. damn u writers for being so smart

I don't understand why there are only two world lines. Why can't there be a gamma? Or whatever c is in the Greek alphabet.

There are limitless world lines, the series is just focused on Alpha and Beta because of the D-Mails sent.

Actually, there aren't limitless world lines. There are only so many that every single thing that can happen, can happen in every single order. Basically ∞-1

what did she say when she had her suitcase and okabe was turned around gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

This is for me my all time favorite episode any show confounded. The romance is done at the perfection. It is really at the apogee of Kurisu and Okabe relationship. Okabe being ready to sacrifice Mayuri to live with Kurisu just showed how much he was broken. Kurisu speech during the kiss is probably the most beautiful romantic moment and phrase I saw/heard. When Kurisu come back just before he change world line, I'm pretty sure she was about to say that she love him too.

After he change world line, the face he make was perfect. It was a mix of confusion and distress. Then he just look instinctively for the sewing she did, looking for a clue that he's wrong, that she's still there. Mayuri telling him that she's fine, that he can cry for himself was also one of the highlight of the episode. It really represented how much Okabe is a wreck at this point (emotionally).

And of course, the after-credit wtf moment, it was a really great timed cliffhanger because it wasn't too rushed and it was a great way to relieve all the heaviness of the episode.

The cinematography was perfect. The building scene was really well made with all the ''camera'' angle. The kiss scene also, it was really sensual.

WAHHH FINALLY KURISU & OKABE moment !! mfg I really shipp them both and was soo overjoyed to see them finally confessing their feelings :33

she is smart, strong great heroine, and he is crazy caring smart and also strong ! they are so for each other ! I really was glad when they kissed..

BUT DAMN WHY MAKING SO SAD EPISODE WHY SACRIFICING ONE YOU LOVE FOR ANOTHER ONE WHO IS SO STUPID T_T
I am sure if Kurisu was in place of Mayuri she could prevent her death million times T_T

THAT MAYURI IS SO STUPID AND ANNOYING ! mfg I can't believe they sacrificed everything to save her :(
also he didn't manage to save anyone from SERN, he just made it back to start .. really disappointed of this epipsode.
it's like doing everything to prevent that doing from the start, and they wanted to get off SERN..

really that stupid Mayuri is such useless character.. I really thought that Okabe wouldn't abandon Kurisu even after confession ..

agrhhh so pissed at this episode.
and Mayuri is definitely going to be on my BLACK LIST characters.

There are so many romantic moments in this episode! Even I repeat these moments until 3-4 times! :)

But if you see world line divergence number that appears in end of episode, I totally sure that Okabe still doesn't to reach the Steins;Gate World Line.

So, let's see an another epic moments on next episodes! :)

Ok. So, first of all loved this episode! The feels! And the english dub is just soooo good! Anyway, I had one problem/plot hole question...

How can deleting SERN's info about the first D-mail in the PRESENT, change what happened in the PAST? I just can't wrap my head around how Daru hacking into SERN's database and deleting the D-mail info could move world lines and alter the past. Sure, deleting the info would prevent SERN from furthering their time travel research (assuming no one over at the SERN headquarters can remember anything about the intel they gathered on the first D-mail) but how does that affect what has already happened?

HOLY SHIIIIIIT ENDIIIIING

It's odd; despite all of the really emotional scenes, this series has yet to make me actually cry. This episode ALMOST did it though. I could practically feel Okabe's pain.

Still no explanation on WHY Kurisu killed and who killed her.

Ecstatic Suzuha is back though!
