Dark anime is better with gore, tits, and messed-up things. That doesn't mean that those things have to be in there for an anime to be dark. It just means that without those things, the anime might be a little boring.

Why does it even matter to you? You're just gonna read the wikipedia entry. And just because there is not tits, gore and messed-up things, that doesn't mean an anime can be a bit boring. The biggest example of this is Steins;Gate and a whole load of Shonen.

Series like Death Note, Mirai Nikki, and Elfen Lied are dark, but they're not deep nor are they mature. Monster and Texhnolyze are dark and mature. And Wolf's Rain and Tatami Galaxy are deep, but not dark.

People who are accustomed to shallow moe standards can't tell the difference.

Wolf's Rain is a bit dark, isn't it? Seemed darker than Mirai Nikki to me.
I probably regret this post by now.

I don't know what is a dark anime..don't think I've ever seen one...

Higurashi was really comical, Elfen Lied had naked chicks, Deadman Wonderland was constant sex talk, Code Geass had highschool kids talking about their next club meeting, and Psycho Pass has a bunch of kids shooting lightning balls.. :I

Wow, that is amazing. If i had your type of creative outlook, i wouldn't waste it by watching anime. I would just take drugs...lots and lots of drugs...

Mirai Nikki is psychological?

If having psychopath in the show means it's psychological, then I guess Mirai Nikki do count as they have a number of rather comical psychopaths in there...

Personally, I think Ryuugu Rena of Higurashi is an okay psychopath, but her alone is deeper than all Mirai Nikki's psychopaths add together.

Serial Experiments Lain isn't bloody or gory, but I think it definitely takes a mature mind to understand any meaning in the plot.

By the way, although moe anime pretty much has peaked the last couple of years, that doesn't mean that every fan of dark horror anime has switched tastes. Hell, it doesn't hurt to balance a really dark, twisted series with a more mindless fun one. :P

Doesn't it have the MC going through some sort of psychological difficulties? I mean, he was suddenly told to kill random people by his imaginary friend, was it and he had a psychopath in love with him.

Ah, see we are different. 16 year olds got their mind blown because they just saw things that they might not have got up until that one point. Call me crazy, but hell I even think Angel Beats' target audience is older than its fan base.

I spend hours and hours looking for serious animes.More than serious I wold say not cliche-like ones.Im not saying that cliche-like animes are bad, just that if 80% of the series tend to follow preconceived cliches, they end up being a little tedious.

I love animes with serious atmospheres and adult characters (+20 at least) where they just focus on the plot and nothing else. The fact is that, given that anime is seen as "cartoons" and the target group is thought to be between 14-18, producers find more benefit making animes for that group(at least that is what i think).

If we take into account the seinen animes out there, they are just a little portion of the whole "anime world".
In my opion serious animes are rated much better than childish or cliche-like ones(for instance some masterpieces like elfen lied, monster, ghost in the shell, ergo proxy...

I'll accept Madoka Magica as psychological, but only on the very surface layers of the genre.

It's unfortunate, in my opinion, that so many anime fans are so easily awed and mindfucked by anything with passing resemblance to deepness. You can dress a pig up as a philosopher and an anime fan will call it a masterpiece.

It doesn't have to blow your mind to be psychological. Madoka is psychological because the psychology of the characters is very important.

Shin Sekai Yori is another psychological anime, in this respect.

Stupid question with relation to etatau's post

Psych is about the mentality of people yes

Is "thriller" the genre that makes an anime mindblowing?
sexual incest in nisomonogatari - no one bats an eye
romance incest in SAO - everyone loses their minds

I have to agree. It seems that some people have failed to realize that anime as a medium has always been about more light and accessible entertainment. That is what it is (or was) good at doing. The worst anime are the kind of that try to be the two at the same time, unless they become such extreme clusterfucks of nonsense that they're actually enjoyable like Code Geass or Death Note.

What balance? 1/10 anime is dark, and psychological. The rest are about school and cutesie stuff and romance and comedy and robots and super powers.

You really don't have the merit to be making that sort of claim with your massive list of 39 completed shows. You haven't even seen 1% of the anime out there, how can you say what 80% of the medium does?

Dark, Serious and mature is my preferred genre.

My favorite anime are Psycho-pass, GitS, Texnolohyze, Monster, Kara no Kyoukai, Mardock Scramble, Berserk, Bokurano, Mononoke, & Mnemosyne. Black Lagoon is also a favorite of mine. It has some comedy spread throughout, but it also has its dark and serious moments.

I like mature anime like Gankutsuou, Monster, Kaiji but I don't like over the top super gory type of anime like Genocyber. I can handle and do like gore in realistic type of anime like Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal and Golgo 13 but I hate gore with like demons or ugly monsters killing people and stuff like that.

Notice the emphasis on DARK.

And "dark" means something that's messed-up like gore and blood. "Dark" could also mean a messed-up story too; a traumatic or psychological story. Again, notice the emphasis on DARK.

I'm so Dark, its my name.

On a serious note though, contrary to my name, I much prefer lighter shows over the darker ones.

I think the very idea of a "Dark" anime is subjective, I've known some people to think Deadman Wonderland as the most depressing and darkest anime/manga out there yet I simply shrug off the themes in it. There are also those who believe Shingeki no kyojin is a dark and disturbing anime because of all the blood and death while I think it is childish since most of it is senseless killing.
