So I was talking to my friend a few days ago and I'm not sure how it came up but I mentioned anime in our conversation. He told me what is anime? He is 27 years old and from straight out of Russia. He has never seen or heard about anime until those few days ago. He never even knew that Japan made cartoons. All he knows is American cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, & Disney/Pixar/Dreamwork films & Russian cartoons like Nu, pogodi. Both him and his wife have no idea wtf I was talking about. In other words, both are absolute anime virgins. And I'm wondering, what would be the absolute best series to introduce them into anime?

There was no anime present in their childhoods, nor in their teen years and young adult years. This will be the very time they ever lay eyes on this medium of entertainment.

I had a couple ideas, but I'm not sure if they're truly the best place to start or whether I'm just being bias.

They're English isn't all that there yet so the heavy dialogue of Akira & Ghost In The Shell might throw them off.

The violence in Ninja Scrolls or Berserk might disgust them.

They might think Dragon Ball Z & Tengen toppa Gurren Lagann are too silly.

Serial Experiments Lain & Evangelion might just come off as too weird for them.

And as I've mentioned they're English isn't all that there yet. So subs are kind of out of the question, since they still have trouble with grammar sometimes. Although something Russian dubbed or subbed would be absolutely perfect. Does anyone have any ideas, or should I just let them be?

One question, did you ask the couple whether they are interested in starting anime or not?

Pick something that would appeal to their personal tastes.

The end.

Why is it so hard for people to understand this concept? Not just in this case, but in any case of 'what should I show someone new to anime?". Show them what they'd like - not what YOU liked, not what you think they are supposed to like, not what's popular or defines this or that genre. Show them what they would like based on their tastes in everything else.

In this case you need to consider the language issues - but aside that, and even with that involved, you should find something that would be good to THEM that they'd understand. Not what you believe is oh-so-great or whatever.

No. They're probably not lol. Still though, they are film buffs. They actually came to LA to learn more about film making. So something out there should peak their interest.

You shouldn't really push any sort of ideal on your friend. For example: My Weeaboo friend tried that with me with animes like Death Note and Bleach..... I am currently not talking to him.

It's not something I'd normally recommend as a gateway anime, even though it's one of my favorites, but have you considered Madoka Magica? The witch, familiar, and labyrinth designs by Inu Curry are utilized from existing traditions in Russian animation, so it might be something that you can ease your Russians friend into.

Tell him the usual "it's more than meets the eye" rounds if they asks why you're showing them something sappy.

Seconded
There's two kinds of people you can't win an argument against:
One - Too dumb to tell right from wrong.
Two - Too stubborn to admit they are wrong.

There is a fairly sizable Russian fansubbing and even fandubbing scene out there, so chances are you'll be able to find something in his language. Check subs.com.ru , they've got Russian subtitle files that will more or less fit existing English subbed/dubbed files you may have lying around. But I would suggest movies or short OVAs rather than full series -- a lot less time commitment for someone who's just dipping their feet in the water.

If it's films we're talking about, you can try Satoshi Kon films (Perfect Blue can work, and there might be Russian subs somewhere if you can find em)

There's at least one animated movie shown in Soviet cinemas (censored, of course) - The Flying Phantom Ship.

I was about to join the crowd and suggest you ditch them, but since you are determined to try, how about Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart, or Karigurashi no Arrietty.
World Masterpiece Theatre series, Romeo no Aoi Sora, Ie Naki Ko Remi, should also sound familiar in terms of European setting x Fairy Tales.

I have rarely met Russians who aren't into sci-fi - I don't see problems with Ghost in the Shell movies (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was nominated in Cannes Festival 2004). If these people are really into movies, they better start watching those sooner.

Pshhh it doesn't matter if they're interested!

One of my friends refused to watch anime until I forced him to watch a couple episodes of Shingeki no Kyojin... he loved it and now watches anything I rec. him.

I would say something that's a movie, if they are film buffs(not just people who watch popular movies) they would probably find things to enjoy in some of the more critically acclaimed anime movies. My recs..

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Princess Mononoke
Redline
Millennium Actress
Paprika

I would say don't force them if they don't seem into it though. I think movies like the ones I recommended are probably your best bet though. They don't take time to develop like series.

I think Paprika is probably the best option. It doesn't have tons of dialogue, it shows how amazing Japanese animation can be, it has a cool premise, and is aimed at adults. You can also probably convince them to watch it by saying it's an anime that inspired Inception(if they've seen that, they wouldn't be much of film buffs if they hadn't).

Assuming they actually want to watch anime, show them Paprika or Millennium Actress.

I'm going to agree with those who say Ghibli and movies in general over series. Don't show them the bland otaku pandering stuff or things that requires knowledge of anime culture, they might not like it/understand it. More mainstream things that have an equivalent in books and movies will work just fine, doesn't need to be family films either.

There are tons of anime that have Russian dub:

And not only that:

Sekai Meisaku Douwa: Mori wa Ikiteiru <--- this is an adaption of Marshak's "12 months" (I like the Russian version better, but this one also has its charm)
Sekai Meisaku Douwa: Oyayubi Hime
Jack to Mame no Ki
Alibaba to Yonjubiki no Tozuku
Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko
Nagagutsu Sanjuushi
Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko: 80 Nichikan Sekai Isshuu
Chibikko Remi to Meiken Kapi
Andersen Douwa Ningyo Hime
Sekai Meisaku Douwa: Hakuchou no Ouji
Taro the Dragon Boy

More modern stuff (professional dubbing):
Spirited Away
The Secret World of Arrietty
Brave Story
Spice and Wolf
Kiki's Delivery Service
Otogi Zoshi - The Legend of Magatama
Byousoku 5 Centimeter
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Omohide Poro Poro
Ergo Proxy
etc.

There are also many fan-dubbing too (voice-over).
