I've probably missed the point of Princess Hitei killing Togome. Was it to prevent the change in history? Could someone enlighten me?

Why do i seem like the only one who liked togame? Sure she set out to use him, but almost immediately he changed her and its obviously she loved him. All those things she said about killing him were lies to make him live his life to the fullest with no regrets(which she also ordered him to do). Even her last words prove this more. CHEERIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ending so epic..

This is what I call an ending! All the emotions and perfect balance with ending the plot was really awesome to see! The begin of the episode was really sad, deep down I hoped she would survive in a way but that hope was lost when we saw her grave! But yea I think it does strengthen the whole story!

After that it was just a massacre the 12 months they where on their journey was all trashed in one single evening, all the swords broken and the goal destroyed, but with such power! Looking back to the old episodes we really see how much he had held himself back to not destroy the swords or get hurt himself!

In the end it was a really great journey to see the development of the characters really change over time really makes it awesome and as the length of one episode is longer it made a global episode much richer in story telling!

It was a great journey in the end but with a sad ending, still this was one great Anime and a great 10 hour run! 9/10

I've finished this just yesterday, and believe me, I was depressed for 24+ hours because of how it turned out; but then again, it makes so much sense.

The battle was definitely epic, and seriously, I burst out into tears (well, figuratively) when Shichika dressed up in similar clothing as Togame to mourn her death. That was just *sniff* so beautiful and so touching.

The last conversation between Togame and Shichika was so sad... I've never cried from watching something but surprisingly, I was sniffing throughout the last 40 minutes.

Although the whole happily-ever-after is cliche, I would've appreciated it more. Just my humble opinion as a girl who'd like a happy ending.
(Still depressed and sad from it...)

Well Katanagatari was definitely 10/10 for me - till this episode. I didn't like the ending at all. Togame's death was sad and tragic, but I am into tragic endings, so I was fine with that, what's a problem for me is everything that took place after it. Whole part of fighting in a castle was for me disappointing.
And I could even live with Shichika going berserk (though it was like complete ruin of a person in whom he evolved during the journey), but Shichika going berserk and not dying? And travelling with Hitei? I mean really? I almost hated this episode. Everyone who I loved during other episodes turned out to be almost heartless retards. It's ingenious story, absolute masterpiece with exception of this one episode.

I totally agree with you on that; although I must say, Shichika going berserk was a sight to see but WTF HITEI? Are you fricking kidding me? I wanted to strangle her on the spot she laughed about killing Togame! It was a big let down but then again, I feel like it wouldn't have been as shocking had Togame not died.

Holy fucking shit, this final episode was amazing! I really regret putting Katanagatari on hold for almost a whole entire year. My friend even called this Anime '9/12' (episode 9 being where I stopped watching at :P).

Togame's death scene was very saddening. So Togame was going to kill Shichika when she had completed her sword collection journey and all her feelings were 'pawns'. Dammit, that really got me. I almost teared up too. Shichika totally changed when Togame died. His eyes looked so damn awesome. You could tell he was really pissed off. I loved it when he defeated all of the 12 swords individually. It's like a room full of boss battles.

Shichika was so fucking badass. His fight with Emonzaemon was the best. I really liked how he was like 'I don't have to obey Togame's orders anymore. I came here to die'. He looked even more badass with all those wounds and bullets pierced in his body. I absolutely loved it when Shichika killed the last guy while yelling Cheerio~ I'm gonna miss that. <3 Seeing those Togame flashbacks were great.

Some parts felt pretty boring but an awesome final episode to a great series. I was surprised to see Hitei-hime still alive and tagging along with Shichika though.
Overall giving Katanagatari a 9/10.

Just managed to get around to finishing this series and, it was amazing. I can see how It would be much more enjoyable watching the series as it aired though, it's not something I can marathon easily. Guess that combined with the fact that I haven't had much time to watch anime recently are the reasons why it took me so long to finish this.

Anyway, I find it hard to understand the ending. Hitei had Togame killed whom the seemingly emotionless (Well after that scene hes not really emotionless) Shichika actually loved. Yet he allows her to accompany him on his journey? Even if he doesn't want revenge, surely hes got to hate her or find her company distressing. Or is he really still that emotionless?

Bittersweet ending.

It's a shame Togame died though, but I was expecting that when I started watching this since I read her bio. After the fight slaughter at the shogun's castle/palace, he ended up with the princess, or at least it appeared that way. I didn't expect that, rather, I thought he would die from taking all those injuries.

Still, this was an entertaining 12 episodes, and because of that, I give it a 9/10.

Meh, someone said that we can't take real endings if it was meant for Togame to live.

My scored actually lowered twice:
1)Because Togame died
2)Because Shichika lived.

Easy easy easy 10 and a new member of my top 5 (as well as 2 new fav characters). Everything about this worked perfectly for me. The art style, the music, the action, the comedy. An instant classic that I will rewatch for sure. The entire BD box set is like $120 and I would easily spend that on this. Bravo, White Fox. Again.

Togame's death was amazing. I teared up because of it, but damn, I can't believe she really did kick the bucket.

One of the best endings I've seen for an anime. This episode was explosive. I never really cared much for Shichika(Always considered him the weak link of the show), but he was one badass mofo in this episode.

Well, I don't really like an ending without Togame, but the way they handled it was good. They way he fought was really nice and it was even better that he didn't kill the kid on the 10th floor, showing his character development. The fight against Emonzaemon was impressive and his finishing blow against the shogun that split the whole tower was nice to with his "Cheerio!".

Nice to see Shichika drawing a map of Japan. It's really too bad that he couldn't do it together with Togame.. I really wished a happy end for those two :(

Such a sad episode/finale...:(

Togame lying there dying and her final speech. Dying under that sunset ;.;

Well, overall I found the series very entertaining. Those fights against the first 11 blades were predictable but the final fight to break Jū was well presented. It finally ends. The way that Shichika Yasuri took those bullets and retaining his resolve to win was epic.

>Princess, please forgive me for dying for your sake.

Damn.

9/10 for this series. Very well presented and exciting unlike some of the other shounens I've watched.

You want to rate this series lower than a 1 because your favorite character died? Even though said character had a great death scene, and the series as a whole is reeking of quality.

Flawless logic right there folks.

That same thought occurred to me too. In fact, being that upset about Togame's death kinda proves that the show was good - he got so attached to her that her death really bothered him.

I loved Togame too. But to give a a score of something lower than a 1 just BECAUSE your character died on the very last episode of a series, that's incredibly stupid. If that was the case, The Song of Ice & Fire series would never be a popular as it is with the high main character body count. And that series kills characters almost at random, with some of the shittiest death scenes I've ever read.

I mean, did you guys expect them to run into the sunset and live happily ever after? It's the last episode, so anybody should know that the likelihood of main character deaths is very high.

Good example. Especially in the upcoming season (A Storm of Swords doesn't fuck around).

I hoped they would, but it wasn't in the cards, and I definitely won't resent the creators for the ending they chose. I thought it was pretty powerful and it also served to push Shichika over the edge.

I have to admit this was the only time I ever enjoyed Shichika as much as Togame. Until this last episode, I just thought of him as meh, but his killing spree during the 2nd half of the episode really stood on even ground with Togame's emotional death scene in the first half.

So i just finished the anime and i've been thinking about it for a while, as well as reading the posts here and other reviews about the end, but there's still a lot i don't understand. I see most people thought the end was awesome and although i enjoyed the series as a whole i can't say that i like the way it ended, or at least not until i can make sense of it, so i would really appreciate if someone could explain to me the things i don't get:

1. The thing that bothers me the most and apparently most of the people who didn't like the ending is Togame's dying speech, i understand that she meant what she said, the image of the snake proves it, however i still can't accept it as the truth, it seems like she's saying that although the feelings she has for Shichika are real she still, somehow, plans to kill him and it isn't even her choice, some other part of herself is making all the plans that use her feelings in order to get her revenge, which seems like an excuse someone came up with on the spot. Even if she was like that at the beginning of the story we saw her change and other characters, like Penguin, acknowledge her change. I would like to understand how she was making all of these plans and yet manage to not know they were being made until the moment of her death, and if i'm mistaken and she did know, how would she be able to kill Shichika despite her feelings (revenge only goes so far). Even with Togame dying i could see a better ending than this, i am not against "bad" endings, i actually like them when they feel like they fit the whole story which isn't the case, it truly feels like a rushed one.

2. What is the meaning of Togame's eye anyway!? I still can't get it, does it appear when she is making schemes or when she is thinking about her revenge, making those plans that she talks about and therefore lying about what she says at that moment...

3. Shikizaki Kiki's plan and the whole history thing. I STILL can't understand what were the power changes since Kiki's time, if there were any, what was the shogunate that he wanted to overthrow and did it change since the sword hunt's time? Also, Togame's father wanted to restore history which means that something had already been altered, but i don't know what that was, since he led a revolution it must have something to do with the shogunate, but if that's correct wouldn't that mean that Kiki's plan had already succeeded?

There's no point in asking about Emonzaemon or why Shichika didn't kill Himei (just have to swallow that one, i guess), but i really need answers to these questions.

The art is worth watching but the duels were sooo lame, extremely lame (aspecially with all the potential of characters' abilities) such a dissapointment has to deeply affect the score of the martial arts and action anime, though every fight was somewhat symbolic due to the message it carried, (for example the fight with the priest who was a mirror of Togame's future) but still badly executed.

I completly didn't get the ending, I don't understand Kiki's or whatsoever "plan" I guess I'll have to watch this again someday,

I would have given it a 10 if it wasn't for the last minute. Togame's death was sad but so foreshadowed that it had to be, but her being replaced by her killer was bullshit :( That I really hated.

Still, it was an awesome anime.

So...now Hitei (who was spared by Shichika for no apparent reason) is traveling with Shichika and actually replaced Togame... Fuck. That. I mean wtf, pretty bad ending I must say. He should have either died as well, or kill Hitei, or just go make that map (which was a good idea btw) alone.
Togame dying was sad, but acceptable. I really don't know though whether she was actually lying about wanting to kill Shichika or not, both ways would be possible.
The rest of the episode was great, all the fighting and Shichika going berserk and beating everyone like a true badass. The true power of Kyotouryuu, huh? Awesome.
I also liked how he got a cross-shaped scar under his eye, obviously symbolizing Togame.

The series itself, was... I don't really know, I mean I didn't really find much flawes, but somehow it still didn't really touched me.
There could have been more romance, the fights should have been longer and actually more of a fight, and sometimes it was pretty boring. I didn't really feel like it needed 12 50min episodes, half of that would have been enough in my opinion.
I really liked Togame's and Shichika's interactions, those were the main thing that kept me interested. They are both great characters (btw, Tamura Yukari is amazing as ever).
I also liked the art style and the soundtrack (mainly the background musics) was well done (even the hip-hop/rap or whatever that is called was fitting). I wish they kept the first OP though, it was quite good, the second one was meh. The EDs were decent. The one song that I really liked and will probably keep listening to was the ones played both during the very first scene of the anime and now when Shichika killed the Shogun. It's kind of weird, but also very good.

So, all in all, this was an enjoyable series for me, but it wasn't anything all that great either. And I really feel like the ending (the last minutes) was a huge betrayal to Togame.
Still, it was worth watching once, so my final verdict will be a 7/10.

Holy crap, the entire killing spree though all the swords was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
The animation was amazing as well. White Fox don't disappoint.

"You've died 272 times." Damn, just damn. Shichika=overflowing badassery
The 10th sword was hilarious though, everyone pretty much dying brutally and she only got clonked on the head lol.

Yes I bumped up my score to a 9 because Togame died and stayed dead (and because of how good this episode was).
I'm not sorry to say that I would have lowered it down to a 7 if she somehow managed to stay alive.

One of the things Shichika said is "I can't take on more than one person." and of course he went after the old fart.
Idk why she tagged along with him though, I agree with others, that was kind of cheap.

I do not approve of Hitehime drastic change in personality or her just tagging along with Shichika. That doesn't make much sense to me. It's the drastic change in personality for me. Ah well.

It was an unexpected change, but it felt pretty natural to me. Hitei is almost exactly like Togame. They are in a constant but respectful rivalry of oneupmanship, both using everyone and everything around them as tools, pawns to be sacrificed in the battle. They were like 2 versions of the same person competing for a spot available for only 1. And they didn't dislike each other. There was no bad-blood or resentment between them in the end. And with Shichika's master dying and Hitei's sword dying, having Hitei take Togame's place is poetic justice.

I can't even say it was really a change in personality. Hitei just never had the opportunity to show that side of her. Remember, Togame also was a cool, calm, business-only girl who would show a childish human side when she became embarrassed or indignant. Shichika caused those moments because he would question her rather than simply obey. He posed some challenge to her view of herself.

On the other hand, Hitei's servant, Enzo, was completely subservient and didn't question her or pose any challenge. It even seemed to annoy her that he was so pathetically wrapped around her finger. Shichika was the first one to not do as Hitei ordered and to not treat her as a superior. That caused her to complain and make the cute pouting face. But since she's not in control of Shichika but still needs him, she can't do anything but accept his insubordination.

It was a perfect fit. I would be interested to see another special episode just of how those two develop...

About Hitei, it was explained earlier that she had no choice but to kill Togame, since she discovered her true identity as the daughter of the leader of the rebellion (in ep 10?), and Hitei and Emonzaemon would have been killed for treason if the shogun discovered that she kept that information to herself. Shichika understands this when Hitei admits that she liked Togame, and he knew that the system itself was responsible for Togame's death.

And plus, he's just letting her accompany him on his journey as she also would have wanted to help achieve Togame's dream, since she must be feeling a little bad/guilty about it (which is also why Emonzaemon said he let Togame die slowly). There is no hint of Shichika and Hitei getting together romantically in the end, especially since they are both respecting the people they've just lost.

Like Shichika said "Are you stupid?!"... that's how I wanted to scream at Togame. And then at everyone there. The story is like the story of humanity's stupidity. I have real life for that already.

Shichika should have died. Then I'd be ok with Togame's death. I agree with this review http://antiotaku.wordpress.com/2011/01/04/katanagatari-episode-12-%E2%80%93-a-legacy-of-failure/

Also. I wonder if Shichika has no hormones or is an eunuch, I seriously think it might be the case. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But goodbye swordline.

So anyway incredible story but the last episode cancels out some of it for having been all "a ruse".

I 'thought' this anime was decent through the first 10 episodes, enough to hold my interest, but nothing special. "A 7 or 8", is what I thought I'd end up giving it. Then everything got tied together in one nice little package in the last two episodes. Then the only reason I could think of for not giving this show a 10 was the One Piece-esque characters in the Maniwani Corps, which really annoyed the shit out of me.

What a sublime story to have witnessed, without ever realizing what I was actually watching until the end.

Not disappointed that Togame ended up dying but the way the last 3ish episodes were handled I feel could have been done in a more satisfying way with things still ending the same.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised with this anime. Battles did get a little lazy at times especially with Emonzaemon at the end (DBZ esque) which was disappointing when it would've had more impact if it was choreographed along the lines of Seirei no Moribito. Characters were great to see develop, though the blonde ojou is still a conniving bitch : P
