Lobsters and crabs can feel pain and take action to avoid it happening again
Findings could have implications on food industry which allows chefs to boil crabs, lobsters and prawns alive

Chefs may have to think twice before plunging live lobsters into a simmering pot.
Scientists have proven that crabs and other crustaceans do feel pain, and are able to recall an unpleasant experience and take action to avoid it happening again.
Research has shown that when shore crabs are given small electric shocks while hiding in dark shelters, they try to escape being zapped again by opting to migrate to another hideout.

Other studies carried out at Queen's University Belfast on hermit crabs and prawns also found that the sea creatures experienced signs of pain.
The finding could have important implications for the food industry, where many chefs boil crabs, lobsters and prawns alive in the belief that they are impervious to pain.

Worse still, many seafood suppliers simply rip off the legs or abdomens of live animals to keep for sale, while throwing the less valuable parts back into the sea.
Lead researcher Professor Bob Elwood, said: 'The experiments show it is likely they experience pain, rather than flinching, and therefore we must start to question how these animals are treated.

Many seafood suppliers simply rip off the legs or abdomens of live animals to keep for sale, while throwing the less valuable parts back into the sea
'In the food industry around the world, billions of crustaceans are used each year but are regarded as not being able to suffer. They suffer extreme treatments which would not be allowed in the fishing or farming industries.
'More consideration of the treatment of these animals is needed as a potentially very large problem is being ignored.' The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, showed that shore crabs are willing to trade something of value to them - in this case a dark shelter - to avoid future electric shocks.
Explaining how the experiment worked, Professor Elwood said 90 crabs were placed in a tank with two hideouts.
Half were given mild shocks, and left their shelter. The crabs were then removed from the tanks and after some rest time, they were returned to the tank.
The majority returned to the same shelter and were shocked again. But on being returned to the tank for a third time, the crabs avoided the hideout where they were shocked.
Professor Elwood said: 'When introduced to the tank for the third time, however, the vast majority of shocked crabs now went to the alternative safe shelter. Those not shocked continued to use their preferred shelter.
'Having experienced two rounds of shocks, the crabs learned to avoid the shelter where they received the shock. They were willing to give up their hideaway in order to avoid the source of their probable pain.'

So it is true that lobsters and crabs feel pain when they are thrown into a pot of hot water while still alive :( This is unnecessary suffering. Can you imagine being thrown into boiling water while still alive? This method of killing should be stopped. Next time you eat lobster or crabs think about how they suffered for your pleasure.

Besides, I don't eat crabs and lobsters.

Good thing that animals don't suffer in factory farms and slaughterhouses, otherwise we'd have to ban those too.

I disagree with this, but I have no qualms causing pain as a means to eat. Were I leopard taking down a gazelle I imagine it would feel quite a lot of pain, but I can't be made to deal with that as I need to eat.

Well then I guess it's a good thing they taste like ass to me. This in no way effects my life, and I'm pretty sure that people will continue to eat them regardless so I can't see how this will possibly have an effect on the food industry, like at all.

The PETA will jump right on this despite the fact that the animals will be eaten anyways.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

In the restaurant where I work, we put the lobsters/crabs in the freezer to kill them, apparently it just slowly freezes their brain until they can't feel anything then they die.

It was already known that lobsters and crabs feel pain. They do have nervous systems, after all. Just because they can't scream and speak for themselves doesn't mean they're not in excruciating pain when people boil them alive or rip their limbs off. People don't understand this though and unfortunately just don't care either way. If they did, maybe factory farming would be illegal and people would have more respect for animals. Has this changed your mind about eating lobsters and the like, Danielcook?

So? Most animals we eat have to live in horrible conditions because of us. If anyone would stop eating sea food because of this, then they might as well stop eating meat all together.

For me, life is too short to care about the well-being of animals. The most important important being here is I and I wants the meat

Who cares, we aren't talking about your dog, cat, horse, or whatever most people have as pets, this is a lobster, it's meant to be eaten, let the chef make it die however he/she likes and really does it matter if it feel pain or not, you think your cat who got a hold of one and started viciously playing with it cares. The cat only cares that it will be eating that day.

No, I would feel like I'm starving if I ever stopped eating meat. The part about animal abuse is incidental to me.

But not buying clothes that were made by child labour is almost impossible whereas not eating meat is very possible. However, whenever I see a piece of clothing I like that was made in America I'm more likely to buy it than if it were imported.

To each his own as long as you're not a worthless lobster though right? I'm not being a bitch; I'm only speaking up for those with no voice.

Next time you eat a burger take a second to think about what it went through to end up on your plate. Or see it for yourself by watching Earthlings (really good documentary narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.) I see this conversation is pointless, so have a nice day. (:

Passive-aggressiveness only makes you sound like a bitch. Don't use it if that's not the image you want to project.

On topic, I guess that's all the better for lobsters. It's not like killing them before boiling them costs all that much more or really takes all that much time, so I don't see why anyone would object to killing them more swiftly. Of course, one has to wonder just how long they feel the boiling water in the first place. Boiling temperatures shouldn't take longer than a few seconds to kill them.

If you had enough clean clothes for a week and you were able to clean them yourself, then wouldn't you have enough? I bet you have more clothes than that because you care about how you look. They're more often a luxury than a necessity

This brings back to the primitive age where ancient people are nomadic hunters. They kill to survive. Obviously, it is painful as you are about to die, the same applies for animals.

Since you brought up crabs and lobsters, I am craving for them now... They are like jewelries in the West. Freakin' expensive.

First off, JennyEsquire is being cold. It's important to understand where the food you eat comes from and to also understand that animals do think and feel pain and that humans are just animals too. Thinking that humans are above other animals and that one life is more important than another is ignorant and wrong.

However, it's also important to understand how the world works. Animals need food to survive and humans evolved to eat meat. Choosing not to eat it is unnatural imo and while I don't have anything against not eating meat, being a self righteous prick about it is very annoying. Not eating meat will not stop animals from being killed. I don't really feel like writing a lot about this though so I'll just redirect you to this page.

the one thing that makes vegetarians completely insufferable is their inane rationale where they cannot bear to be associated to animals' pain and suffering.

vegetarians often blabber on about how it's their choice to eat anything other than animals (aside from fish, because apparently they look ugly) while people in third world countries and elsewhere don't have that choice to make and continue starving until they die. and god forbid that starving pleb grab a hold of that chunk of pork, vegetarians would be preaching on about how that pig could have led a good life and how he should be ashamed for contributing to their extinction

I was going to give a somewhat detailed answer on how the concept of pain is hard to define and thus despite some studies showing that lobsters show pain-like behavior, it doesn’t mean they are suffering like we humans would…
