So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

This is very interesting information. I think the gun is too slow to track and hit a flying plane but a stationary target like an airship is very different. Now I wonder if it will be used in the coming episode to give the Sauders some nasty surprise ;-) (that said, targeting an airborne target would be quite different from hitting a target on the ground using the rangefinder, so perhaps it may not be that easy for the M3 team after all)

It's actually "easy" to point the gun "up" - just park the tank on a bank/hillside. In fact, the US M4/75 Sherman and M10 tank destroyers were often pressed into ad-hock indirect fire support (with a lot of help from trained artillery men to actually 'aim' the guns) and they either took advantage of local ground contours our had banks dug for them. Also, that balloon is NOT going to be anywhere near high enough to cause a problem for the main gun of a tank reaching it.

Studies from WWII actually showed that tank crews spent most of their time *outside* their tank. Even beyond the normal things you do such as calls of nature (going in a spent shell case worked if you couldn't go out, but it stank), eating, sleeping, loading up the tank, maintenance/fixing things, just plain walking around to exercise, and also as portrayed in an earlier episode where the crew gets out to survey the landscape in front of them to see where enemy anti-tank guns might be hidden, likely approach routes, looking for a place to cross a stream, directing the tank over a narrow bridge (again, as was done in the first episode), etc. The British army in 1944 reported that most of their tank crew casualties occurred while the crewmen where outside their tanks, often the victims of "harassing" mortar fire.

But without practicing shooting at an airborne object it is still not that easy to hit the object in one shot, right?

Not so much. Even with their modest 37mm gun, shooting at a stationary airship within a 1km range is a straightforward task that doesn't require complex calculations.

Probably a recap.... oh well......

Anyway, some highlights from Ep.5 - another wonderful episode !

Hey you the tank expert, dream of a room like Akiyama's?

Few things about the anime...

First up, right after Strike Witches, Girls und Panzers seems to be another extremely well researched anime. Kudos to the production team!

Now back to Akiyama's room...

First up, just like in episode 2, there's sublimal or BLATANT product advertisment. Just the boxes itself I see Italeri (A Pz 38(t) top box art with a DML for the sides of the cover... Funny), Tamiya and possibly Trumpter or Eastern Express (the red box and it's a KV II)

On the shelf, he have the following in 1/35 scale...
Top - Cromwell, Archilles, not sure which German armoured car and Pz II
Bottom - Tristar's Panzerbefehlswagen I, Italeri's Gepard and Strumpanzer Iv

Very close! The tank next to the Cromwell is actually M36 Jackson, with SdKfz 223 just next to it. Not the most common choices for military models to display I gotta say!

At least :) According to the wwiivehicles.com site (as well as wiki), the muzzle velocity of the US 37mm AT is about 960 yards per SECOND. In two seconds, it's already traveled two kilometers. Accounting for air resistance would certainly help to slow it down, but that balloon is no where near high enough to be out of reach.

We're not just talking about outside of combat though. As this discussion points out, it was extremely common practice in many armies to fight "unbuttoned," and in fact still is. Drivers and tank commanders in particular hate to rely on the narrow field of vision the periscopes and vision blocks afford them - they get no situational awareness. As such, they would often only truly button up when facing infantry (mainly due to sniping) and artillery (shrapnel always finds the unprotected guy). Germans were quite famous for, just as depicted, frequently fighting tank vs tank engagements unbuttoned. It's similar to when they were discussing Ulric's tactics in A Knight's Tale. While many try to minimize even the slim chance of getting hit with your head sticking out, leaving that vulnerability there generates massive benefits in situational awareness, and with it reaction time. And let's face it: the chances of a shot hitting a partially exposed driver or tank commander that otherwise wouldn't have hurt them is insanely low, especially when the enemy is moving too*.

Fun fact: the necessary stabilization and targeting systems to fire accurately at moving targets while on the move did not exist in WWII. Tanks usually stopped completely before firing if their goal was actually to hit the enemy at anything other than near-point blank range. It wasn't until the late 1960s that tanks with even a modest fire-on-the-move capability began seeing service, and not until the early '80s when ones that could do so at high speed became prevalent.
Cold War Soviet armor doctrine, for example, called for an advance speed of 35-40 km/h in the 1980s, as that was the maximum speed a T-72 could fire accurately from.

Yep. I've read that since in the Israeli army during the 60s, 70s and 80s it was "doctrine" for the commander to be exposed the job of tank commander was considered one of the most dangerous in the army, backed up by their casualty rates.

More Offtopic Trivia: actually, since 1941~1942 US employed one-axis stabilization on almost all tanks, and many armoured cars as well. Though, that particular system wasn't too effective (outside the proving ground, at least), was a maintenance nightmare and required extensive additional training from gunners, so even in the US few crews bothered with it, and postwar this direction was abandoned for more than ten years.

USSR too, during WWII worked on stabilizers (of a more suitable type), but it wasn't until early 50s that this technology was developed enough to be fielded. Oddly enough, it was the British who quickly developed and first fielded a practical tank stabilizer in about 1948.

Mistakes on the official webpage:

There are four mistakes on the official webpage. They are all on the "Character Page" which is http://girls-und-panzer.jp/chara_list.html

The first two have to do with the girls on the History Club team (driving the Stug).

For 左衛門佐, if you click on her face it takes you to the correct page, but if you click on her name the link is wrong. This is her:

Likewise, for おりょう, if you click on her face it takes you to the correct page, but if you click on her name the link is wrong. This is her:

Next, for the M3 Lee team, if you click on the face for 山郷 あゆみ you get the right page, but if you click on her name the link is broken. Ayumi is the gunner for the Lee's main gun and she is by far the tallest of the six. This is her:

Finally, for the Pravda (Russian) team, if you click on the face for ノンナ you get the right page, but if you click on her name the link is broken. This is her:

Apart from the above, I don't see why the character page doesn't show Sodoko (そど子). She is the Chair of the Discipline Committee (風紀委員長). Her real name is 園 みどり子 or その みどりこ or Midoriko Sono. Here is a link to her image (the girl on the left):

I found something. Darjeelin's vehicle is called the "Pink Panther"

The Pink Panther is an adaptation of Land Rovers for military purposes.
Approximately 100 Series IIA models were adapted to reconnaissance use by the British special operations forces the SAS. For desert use they were often painted pink, hence the name. The vehicles were fitted with among other gear a sun compass, machine guns, larger fuel tanks and smoke dischargers. Similar adaptations were later made to Series IIIs and 90/110/Defenders.

During Yukari's exposed espionage, it was funny to see Kei laughing when Yukari mention Sgt. Oddball. Kei must have known and watch Kelly's heroes. Kei is likable compared to the other two bitches that are with her.

If you know about projectile calculation you would know that even at the most upward angle there is a max height that a shell can reach from the tank gun. It is totally possible (in fact very easy) that an airborne object can just stay at a certain height and it will never get hit by the gun of any tank.
I did that's why i mentioned that a good gunner might be able to hit it i believe you also mentioned in a previous topic that the shells/bullets fired from the tanks should be made out of carbon according to the regulations.
Carbon weighs less then metal so gravity will have less effect on it however the wind will have more effect on it.

The elevation of many tank guns is limited though, requiring that you get far enough away from the target to be able to get a bead on. Also, hitting a target in mid-air, even a stationary one, is incredibly difficult due to factors like gravity that arcs the shot. There's a reason that anti-aircraft work is left to dedicated platforms like SPAAG's (self-propelled anti-aircraft guns).

Ironically, M3 Medium (Lee) they use has a quite unique advantage of 60° elevation for its turret gun. While odds of hitting a moving plane with it are virtually zero, an airship is pretty much like a sitting duck for it.
So it is possible the only problem they have to worry about it that it might give away there position.

Actually I only mentioned that Miho said the inside of the tank is coated with some carbon material which I think is to tell us that there should be no worry that a shell will penetrate the armor or cause fragments to fly inside the tank when hit by a shell. I don't think I said the shells need to made out of carbon...Did someone else say that?

Already thought it was strange to fire carbon shells in the first place since they will probably just shatter if the hit a tank.

Hmm, just wonder something....

How many crew does M3 Lee need?

Since it got 2 guns, the duty for the crew will be

- 1 Commander
- 1 Driver
- 2 Gunners
- 2 Loaders
- 1 Radio operator

7 people total....so, the first year team should have one more member? or the girls on the left side of driver (who act as radio operator) will act as a loader too?

^ Information I found (below). Seems seven is ideal but it can be operated by six or five.

"The initial crew included a driver, commander, gunner and loader, upper gunner, a machine-gun servant and a radio operator, totaled seven. The British model did'nt included the radio operator. Later, the US crew were also reduced to six and even five by 1942, as the radio operator became also a gunner. "

I then realized that The Battle Hymn of the Republic was also playing from Oddball's Sherman when it arrives toward the end of the movie.

I'm now pulling for the entire final battle sequence of the movie to appear in some form in a future episode. Maybe a pink paint round into the back of Maho's Tiger?

Then those of us with poor Japanese reading skills would be able to use online translation tools ( such as http://translate.google.com/#ja/en/ ) to get some idea of the English meaning. There is some interesting stuff. Of course, it would be super if somebody wants to volunteer to actually translate it, but that would be 100x more work than just scanning it for us.

http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=510851#msg18053635
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Symbv, thanks for pointing out that earlier post. Thank you also to entropy13 for doing the translation.

But I don't get this rule:

2-02 制限車輛數
各チムの競技車輛數は各識合ごとに聯盟が指定する制限車輛數
を上回つてはならない﹒ etc.

各 each
チム team
の 's
競技 competition
車輛 vehicle
數 number

各識合ごとに must (for each team) conform to
聯盟が the Association's
指定する specification of
制限車輛數 the number of vehicles

上回つて exceed
はならない﹒ must not

This is the rule about the limitation on the number of tanks that each team can use. From my limited ability to read Japanese, apparently all it says is that the number of tanks is limited by the Association, but it isn't more specific. It seems crazy to let 10 M4 Shermans fight against the 5 Ooarai tanks. So how could the Association approve that? In Episode 5 I think I remember Miho saying that there was a limit of ten tanks per team.

This is because of the second part of 2-02 that was not in your post:

但し、一方が制限数を下回る場合であっても試合は成立するものとする

Translation:

However, when one side has fewer number (of tanks) than the limit, the match will still go ahead.

In anime, I think the characters also talked about that in the cafe, that the limit is 10 tanks and Saunders is rich enough to deploy 10 (in fact a lot more) so they have to face 10 tanks. It just goes to show how rich schools are advantaged in this senshado tournament. Or we can lament how poor our heroines' school is...

BTW, for the first part of the 2-02 rule, the translation would go:

2-02 Vehicle Number Limit
The total number of the vehicles sent to the match by each team cannot be more than the number limit of vehicles set by the Association for the specific match.

The thing that fascinates me the most is to know the meaning of this small part:

"giveout" #2

the left-most white column

the bottom 25% of the page

^ Those text beneath the HUGE TEXT saying 強さと賢さ ?

Those are some comments from Shiho Nishizumi, the head of the Nishizumi School of Senshado (and I presume she is the mother of Miho).

^ Yes. That part. Right down to the bottom of the page.

Indeed, that is Miho's and Maho's mom according to Japanese Wikipedia. So I am quite curious about what she has to say.

So you want to know what she said. OK here we go:

打てば必中、守りは固く、進む姿は乱れなし。
鉄の掟、鋼の心、それが私の教える西住流戦車道です。
みなさんは学生としての本分を全うし、正しく戦車道の道

Hit whenever we shoot; have strong defense; as we advance our formation never breaks
Rule of Iron, Heart of Steel. That is the Nishizumi School of Senshado that I teach.
Everyone, fulfill your duties as a student,
and strive towards the proper way of Senshado!

The official Twitter released a bunch of trivia information about Ep.5:

- What is the reason Saori got to end mails from her mobile phone to other tanks in her team? It is because she is fast in thumbing mails on her phone (check Ep.3)

- Kay indeed does not know radio interception is going on.

- Since Kay likes to be leading the battle from the front, she decided not to make her tank as the "flag tank".

- The battle of Saunders vs Ooarai is fought on an island, and the island's shape is modeled after the Awaji Island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awaji_Island However, the vegetation or built-up areas are all changed in the anime.

- There will be an OVA about the events happened after the espionage and the actual battle against the Saunders and this will be included in the BD.

- The meeting room in the Saunders and the pathways that Akiyama made her escape were modeled after the inside of the Hyuga helicopter-destroyer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hy%C5%ABga_class_helicopter_destroyer

- The idea of Akiyama sneaked into the Saunders to spy on their team came from Director Mizushima.

- Those plastic model tanks in Akiyama's room were not done by CG, as usually the case, but was done by hand-drawn animation.

- We decided that the Akiyama's Barber is not doing very good business, so we got her dad to sit on a customer's seat when Miho and the girls came in.

- Akiyama watches the Senshado's tournament final (only the final is broadcast on TV) every year.

- The notebook that the waitress in the Panzer Cafe used to write down orders is modeled after the notebook used by the Germany Army.

- Near the end of ep.4, there is a chart for all the schools entering the senshado tournament. All the names for those schools which will lose in the first round were Director Mizushima's idea.
