Though I wasn't a fan of the slightly more mundane episodes previously, this episode's fishing experience was quite alright. So there are players in SAO too who are dedicated fishermen. They must have had some fighting skill since the stage's level 22, but I guess they decided they'd be better off not burdening other players on the battlefield.

Kirito's overprotective romance was cliche, but Asuna did raise a very valid point about their bodies in real life. Glad they decided to touch on it instead of just leaving the viewers to Google themselves the reason (which I did :X ).

Quite surprised that next week is that already, so fast? I never read the novels but I more or less got the major events that are supposed to happen.

Epic boss design again. This anime needs action like this instead of annoying drama stuff.

One of the reasons why I thought SAO cannot be adapted into a "perfect" anime, because its based on a MMORPG, and unlike other game genres*, MMORPGs are firstly known for "create your own character and story", so that screams "Drama is part of virtual life".**

*I know other genres are also featuring this already, but I was pointing MMORPGs was built initially with this entire concept, rather than "Kill boss to end game" - ironically, the premise of SAO, since Kayaba installed a "Game Over" into the game, sub-killing SAO as a MMORPG in one way.

** I know there are gamers out there who play MMORPG with "Crush Bosses" as their only and main motive, but remember SAO is a death game, and I think that alone will largely reduce those gamers to convert to "Casual" status. (I forgot the exact numbers, but they did show that the Front Liners number relatively smaller to the rest.)

You must have never watched .hack xD. I think that anime right there should kill any expectations that MMORPGS anime's are action based. And this one further helps to prove that haha.

I don't, I admit it straight on now. I also don't have to time to start watching another anime (I barely have time to catch up on SAO, MLATE and read my manga series), so you have to take me for "ignorant' for now.

This is all you need to know.

26 episodes of no action and slow plot pacing (and when I mean no action I mean none). So yeah it set the bar for MMORPG anime's haha.

Though let's be real...most mmorpg players sit around and chat with friends most of the time anyway.

Yes, I'm sure everyone here would love to watch 25 episodes of Kirito grinding for ~10 hours.

I would like to see him chat and form more relationships with people outside of Asuna though sigh. I feel like even in that aspect this show is kinda handling it poorly (compared to .hack at least).

I used imagination to cover it up. I assumed Kirito was a introvert generally. So when SAO converted to a death game that is basically real life, he naturally reverted back to his original nature. That, plus he was a beater (and the inital stigma of beasters) plus the Black Cats incident naturally forced him to be less communicative than others.

Notice how he was pretty fine with teaching Klein initially before the Death Game was announced? If there was no Death Game, he might have even joined Klein's Guild. But the Death Game and the Mirror of Truth forced him back.

Sure, its all my opinion, but considering the psyche of people due to the internet/MMORPGs being anonymous does a lot of attitude changing when it comes to communication, so I find my own opinion to be completely logical.

But the thing is. He helps out everyone just naturally even after that incident, and he obviously formed a relationship with the black guy at the shop (we just never saw any of that).

He's not thattt introverted (he pokes fun at other characters a lot and is suitably chatty like with the old man in this episode).

I think people like to treat Kirito like he's Tsukasa (.hack) which from what I've seen, he's anything but.

He's still a loner-type. Being Introvert doesn't mean you completely void yourself of communication and friends. It means you are a whole whole lot selective about people you actually make friends with, and they are more important to you. (Oh, and according to text I read, these people are a whole lot more talkative with friends or people they hit off well with.)

People can still be helpful to the general public but choose not to be close friends with them. It feels a bit of a bummer to those he helped but didn't exactly friend, but even in real life, it happens.

He just appreciates being alone a lot more, which was why he didn't join a huge guild like KoB initially (in addition to the Black Cats incident.)

I just read up on this topic like yesterday, so I can't be too far from wrong xD

Well yes that's typically the case with introverts (I'm an introvert and yes I'm far more chatty with close friends). Problem is he only opens up with Asuna...for some reason, probably because she's insane.

Anyway I just think this anime would be better if he had more relationships outside of asuna and they were expanded upon (even Tsukasa being the highest level of introversion forms more relationships than he does).

To save the sanity of some MAL users, I'm cutting this quote short to the last one.

I can somehow relate to Kirito (not as a Swordsman, I'm mage material in most games I play, and there's none of that here), especially to his psyche.

Different introverts have different layers of privacy. At this point of time, he already considers Asuna as his significant other half, so its not unusual for him to spill a whole lot more of his feelings on her than anyone else.

He's chatty with people like Klein, Egil and the Fisherman he hit off well with, but obviously the line is drawn when it comes to his personal thoughts. You don't go around spreading really internal thoughts and philosophies with all your friends, even if they're close.

I agree SAO should have expanded on his regular friendships as well, but they don't have the episode space for Kirito to go on a day of dungeon hunting with Klein and Egil. (Arguably, Egil does get said development every time Kirito visits his shop though.) And, its not in the LN anyway.

We did see him chat with Asuna when she ran after him after he beat the first boss, Klein, Egil, Lisbeth, the old fisherman, as you pointed he helped people out for quite some time and talked with them, he also talked with the Black Cats then and so on. He also adopted Yui.

It's not like they've avoided showing him talking with anyone. It's just that he spends most of his time with Asuna. They are in the same guild, about the same level, both playing on the front lines, and they fell in love and married, so they even spent the time off together. They also had a "secluded" honeymoon, so it's natural he a) doesn't talk to that much people and b) he has lots of time and reason to talk with Asuna.

In .hack//sign, they did indeed show more interaction, but with them spending days to weeks never leaving town or even the place (like if Kirito would still spend most of his time sleeping at the spot where Asuna met him the second time), it's no wonder. They also don't have a clear objective, so they need to figure it out, while they can simply fight here, and the anime itself simply had another direction.

Maybe it's better to compare it to .hack//roots, with Haseo trying to be the strongest, shunning others, getting shunned by others, gradually warming up, joining a guild with a mysterious and absurdly powerful leader, his relationship(s)..

Well the funny thing is...what is the focus? There is no real plot as of yet so you would think the focus would be on expanding character relations (and so far all we have is Kirito and Asuna for that). But that wasn't even done until episode 8-9ish. I think they could have cut out some of the filler to expand upon it (as it contributes nothing to the plot).

Even in Roots Haseo formed plenty of more connections then Kirito did. And even then we got to the see the connections of other players with other players that weren't Haseo.

Problem with most of the former relations he has is you only see them at face value. And he only formed a real relationship with Asuna after 2 years in game. It just seems like a lot of mismanaged time, as it doesn't seem to be really accomplishing anything with it.

Actually, the original focus was the 100 levels (& bosses) which broke partially SAO partially as an MMORPG.

But then again, we jumped a 2-year skip, to the point where a lot of people have accepted their fate and started living there, and even the front-liners are having such thought periodically. So the focus was sort of lost.

Like you said, the fillers broke the inital tempo even more, so SAO obviously felt like it had no real goal.

The fillers were also expanding character relations, but more of quanitity over quality.

Something about the character interactions actually felt good in this episode.

I really like the angles they used for some of the interactions between Asuna and Kirito, it made the situation feel genuine to me, it seemed like a scene where real effort went in to conveying a message for a change.

The whole, "I will die if you die" was a tad cliche, but I will let it slide and pretend I heard nothing.

I think i'm actually starting to genuinely enjoy this series now. First episode since the beginning where i actually cared about what was going on.

Great and happy opening, then seriousness all around. Nice.

That boss is a pain in the ass. o __o Reminds me of Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. Hated his guts trying to beat him.
Klein, don't die! You're the only character i genuinely care for!

I like that Yui's Heart was added in the bed scene, was a nice touch. The staff is doing a good job of giving Heathcliff the right atmosphere and presence. The next episode is bound to blow the roofs off of things.

I'm really glad at the unexpected inclusion of the fishing chapter. I seriously expected that to end up on the cutting room floor. Good job guys. Skull reaper was everything I've been waiting floor. SAO anime has's done such a terrific job so far I'm just cringing in expectation of a stumbling point.

Also love the bedroom scene with Kirito and Asuna and seeing Yui there was nice. I can't believe its time for the next episode. The way SAO is going, its genre tags need to be changed.

Girls? Check.
Sword-fighting? Check.
One-man army? Check.
Love-overcomes-all-odds? Check.
Overpowered ability unique only to protagonist? Check.
...and the list goes on.

- romance
I honestly doubt meeting someone sleeping on the grass and having a sudden realization about the world followed by several "dates" counts as romance. It might be different in the LN, but definitely not here.

This show has been getting better lately because it's doing what this anime wasn't doing at the beginning: fleshing out the main characters. Asuna and Kirito make an adorable couple and everything they do is related in some way to their relationship.

Asuna is not a damsel in distress, but she also shows a softer and human side to her character.

After a slightly disappointing beginning, SAO is starting to focus its plot and characters and it is all the better for it.
