I always thought Japanese wouldn't have much problems with russian and some slavic languages, but how can Yui fuck up "Barchenowa" so badly that it doesn't even resemble original name? |

Is anyone else feeling like the directing is seriously bringing this show down? Some of the scenes seem just kind of forced together. And Yui's flashback could have had some serious impact but it just seemed flat to me. |

Ah! the injured ankle plot. So original, so innovative, so inspiring. Oh, no the boat is missing. God hates me!! Now i have to spend a day or two in this island alone with a Russian and a Japanese hot babe. Not to mention we are all half naked without proper clothes. THE MISERY!!!!! _fantasticmrfox said: Cryska in a bikini = THE PRIDE OF MOTHER RUSSIA! Funny with soviet symbol on her breast, lol. Russia power. Arcane587 said: Ugh, Cryska and Yui took a quick 180 this episode for no reason. Completely out of character for them. Don't know about Cryska since her character wasn't shown at all. You can't say is out of character when she had no character. Besides i don't see how she took 180 by just asking a question. As about Yui i don't think this behavior is not in her character. Lets not forget who she was before her traumatic experiences made her try to be more tough. Still it was obvious that kind of side is still inside her by her inside monologues and stuff. She's a woman after all. She can't always act like she sees no man or she'll never have a relationship. At some point she has to feel attraction to a male and even be sweet to him. |

I'm fairly new to MAL and I've been noticing in every episode discussion I enter there's always so much negativity about it lol. Is that normal? It's funny how a lot of people are thinking MLA is going to turn into a harem anime just because of this single fanservice episode. Although the Yuuya/Yui coupling has been established and Cryska (maybe Inia as well) is a possible future love interest, it doesn't justify comparing MLA to those crap ecchi/harem animes. I just don't feel like MLA is NOT going to prioritize the romance (apparently future harem) over the actual plot of MLA (the fight between humans and BETA). Basically, I think the romance will just be some spice for the main story. Regarding the "180" the characters did, I think it's a little exaggerated. While Yui did show a softer side of herself, I believe that's all she did. She did not drop her authoritative personality and go straight to a dere personality. If you never noticed, Yui has only shown her stubborn side to Yuuya as a repellent for his arrogance and the conflicts between them only arose when Yuuya's handling of the Japanese TSFs were involved. Seeing as this episode lacked any TSFs, Yuuya and Yui had nothing to argue about so it would just be bitchy for Yui to act that way. Although Inia arguing with the annoying one (forgot her name) was strange, the personalities of the Scarlet twins haven't truly between established yet IMO since they are still full of mystery. Also, Cryska's interest in Yuuya has yet to be confirmed as romantic (she wasn't blushing when she stated it), so don't start anticipating this anime turning into a harem because of Cryska saying that out of the blue (I do feel it's very possible she will be a future love interest, but not quite yet). If anyone is wondering why I'm being so defensive about this anime it's probably because after taking a look at the Summer 2012 anime list, I found that MLA and SAO were the only animes I'd be taking an interest in (seeing as the rest were all just slice of life, ecchi, harem, or sequels of anime I don't plan to watch yet), and I found it irritating how everyone was being so critical to MLA when the rest of the Summer 2012 anime don't seem like anything better. It's a very sad day when you see a fine anime like MLA rated lower than something like Highschool DxD. |

According to a poster on a another board I sometimes browse, the anime is "staying very true to the LN, with just minor changes here and there (compared to the other LN adaptation series this season). I'm not that certain, but if I didn't count wrong, ep 8 onwards till ep 13 (if they end there) should be BETA action galore." Also, why does everyone keep saying things like, "BETA all over etc. and we're at the beach?" War's not about being on the front lines at all times. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but the BETA have not occupied any of North or South America (the hive that landed in Canada was nuked), Australia, or Africa. Finally, does anyone else think Cryska is "interested" in Yuuya because she's angry at him for that whole incident with Inia? She sounds pissed in the preview for the next episode. |

Probably since I wanted the romance aspect of MLA to start up for some time now. Surprisingly, I haven't seen too much people complaining about the disappearance of BETA, but regardless we barely had a timeskip in episode 3 and had 4/5 to settle us into the new setting. That being said the beach episode was rather sudden, but it's only been 6/25 episodes so I really didn't mind. fullmetal_adam said: Blasphemy! Highschool DxD was a very good anime. IMO Highschool DxD is a very generic ecchi/harem. I've watched tons of them for reasons I will explain as a "phase', and Highschool DxD was nothing special. I refer to any anime with a school setting with very normal characters as slice of life (may be different from the actual definition of slice of life; I never looked into it. Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong). So, I only found the first 2 episodes of MLA to be slice of life, which I only bore through thanks to the BETA being in action. I'm not sure what you mean by promised us episode 2 and whatever...care to explain? Thanks. |

And let's not forget the poor director was so stressed out they had to replace him by episode 10. I don't remember them promising episode 2. In fact they said it would stay loyal to the LN, and there isn't a lot of action in the LN till the end (and we have 25 episodes). MLA: TE needs to succeed before we can get MLA (Which is really episode 2 on overdrive). Well, I'm liking the series so far, at least we get to complain and argue over Yui either being too bitchy or not enough. XD |

I think this anime can be improved with some more frequent "mind talking" from the characters. Its really hard to tell what Yuuya is thinking from just his grunts and scoffs.... Since this anime has the same director I think as Rosario+Vampire....or did.... one of those "la la la la la" moments could of helped explain the changes in attitude between him and Yui hahaha... From a logical stand point I think that since they were out of uniform... their attitudes changed...dropping a bit of their military work personas...and feeling some attraction from all this skin... the directing of the animation doesn't do a good job of showing this though... a short mind speak would of helped greatly... I think Yui had a change of personality because she was feeling useless and was having post trauma stress disorder from her past... it sapped her of energy which is actually possible... they could of shown this better though, maybe using a flash back thought that happens earlier rather than the dream or maybe using both... a short flash back thought... plus a dream sequence... The PTSD might be why they picked her to head up this R&D... to get her away from the Japan and the front lines since she wasn't mentally fit to fight.... maybe they will have a flash back for this.... like how they did for Yuuya where they it shows him being a trouble maker so they kick him to Alaska... |

I drew a little graph illustrating the excitement/action level of the series so far in the spoiler. Yes, it was done in paint...The x-axis is time in episodes, and the y-axis is action measured in excitement units (obviously). This is the sole reason why I think (and fear) the entire thing will fall. The ML Franchise provides one of the hardest way to get people in. Taking the VN series alone: Everyone agrees MLA is one the best, if not the best VNs around. Problem, to enjoy it to the fullest, one has to go through the inferior-in-comparison MLE and MLU. And that's when some people start dropping the series. The Anime, is a whole lot more complicated (Its another layer on top). MLA is too complex (and as a result, too expensive), so they had to kickstart with a series that can be done on a budget, which is MLA:TE. If MLA:TE is a success, they would gain enough funding for MLA. So in Anime terms, MLA: TE is the equal of MLE & MLU of the VNs. You have to get through an inferior stage to get to the superior one. (Except its for enjoyment in the VNs, and for funding in the Anime). But MLA:TE, being a side story, doesn't cover the description of the universe of MLA well enough. Cue Episodes 1 & 2. To describe MLA universe, one has to shown what basically the MLA Anime will be like. That unforunately, creates a false perception of the MLA:TE series as though it would be like "MLA"* to those who have no idea of the ML franchise. So people join in, see episode 2, expect more, and become disappointed and leave. It also creates the reverse effect. Those who will enjoy episode 3 onwards will get turned off by episodes 1 & 2 and not join the anime. What happens? Both sides fall, and MLA:TE barely gets any support because it alienates watchers from all sides. The only people who will stay will be those who already know the MLA Universe and MLA:TE LN is not like MLA. Which won't be enough to support for a MLA Anime. *When I refer to "MLA" here, I mean people getting the impression that we'll get more episodes 2, which will only be true if MLA was animated. it doesn't require the knowledge of the ML franchise, I was just using a convenient term to sum "Episode 2". |

That seems to happen quite often in seasons and i find it frustrating too. For example if you look this anime actually has lower score than most of the more silly not very well made ecchi harems this season. I would understand if this was some anime site full of Japanese otakus that like licking their screens but i hoped a little better from a site with western fans. But it seems many are just Japanophile teenagers that start reading manga pages and novels of whatever new show and are putting themselves into that otaku mentality. Hey maybe after this episode and the moe moments(yeah moe and blushing is what raises scores, fanservice isn't exactly it) the score will go higher. As i see it, usually in forum talking when a show is not in those categories you talked about gets scrutinized more because more critical people actually watch it and care to say something. Many of these people simply drop other silly shows or just accept they are silly without much to talk about so those shows end up with mostly their exclusive fans and with a forum talk of happy moments while a show that actually is not just another silly harem or whatever gets butchered for it's ability to keep critical watchers onboard. Good enough to keep them onboard unlike other silly shows but at the same time it has to take their criticizing since the actual fact that it's not just another of the typical bunch raises expectations. For example like you after watching the first episodes i am more eager to watch this show every week exactly because it looked not to be like the majority of other stuff and have some more intriguing elements that make me look forward to it. But if those potential promises end up at nothing at the end my posts will probably be more critical compare to others no matter if i still score it better than them or not because i actually expected a little something and i will get pissed of if it hardly turns out to be better than those other shows that i already had minimum expectations from. For now am happy with it but this character building relaxing fanservice attitude better not go until before the last two episodes because am gonna get pissed. After 4-5 episodes it better start delivering some tension and plot moving events. I expect that won't happen next episode but hopefully from the 8th episode will start giving us some first episodes intensity or else it might as well join the other harem-slice of life bunch. I enjoyed the service in this one but i won't be happy if that's the best i will get after the initial promises. bmadfsh said: Yeah, that's understandable. It seems to me that they simply got disappointed because they didn't watch what they thought they will despite the fact that it was better. Those first episodes where awesome and better than what we watch now that is more inline with typical cliche anime stuff. But when you want to watch something and you get something else you usually can't appreciate it no matter how good the thing you are getting is. Personally i just want to see more of that tension. I'm experienced enough to realize even when i was watching those first episodes that it wouldn't be going all the time with such tension and that i will get a bunch of slower episodes like what we are getting now but i will be disappointed if it stays like it is now until the end. |

Also what annoyed me was how hard apparently it is to hop/walk on one leg when one of your ankles is twisted. All she had to do is put one arm round his shoulder and not use one leg. I thought she was meant to be some kind of military elite yet she's floundering worse than some random old woman who twisted their ankle wearing high heels they shouldn't have been :/ Kinda miss Meiya and Takeru :P |

He was the one that wanted to carry her and that because by hopping on one leg while using him as a crutch will be slow as fuck. It was raining and he left a sick woman alone in a cave, hopping their way for her pride to stay intact was stupid, it was a lot faster if he just lifted her up and carried her. Btw next episode they discover that they are not alone in the island and that there are "others". ^_^ |

That rope looked strong enough to keep that boat there as a matter of fact is should be strong enough to keep a steel boat four times as that rubber boat there. Also the rope was broken near the tree which would also be strange in other words that rope was bitten by some animal or it was cut by a person. Meaning there could be more people on the island. Seems Yui is haunted by her past judging from that nightmare, it's no wonder she has some form of trauma left from that time tho. It also explains part of her personality. She was also feeling guilty about that pilots that she attacked when trying to force Yuuya to learn how to control his unit and she also opened up allot to Yuuya maybe even to much. She also blushed a few times at his actions. |

Of course he coincidentally gets stuck with the 2 girls that don't like him so he can get closer. Yui was a bitch as always despite him going out of his way to protect both of them. Yeah dude is racking up the harem though, now they'll both want to bang. The boat shouldn't matter much though with the other dude going for help and them having air support near by. I guess those 2 can discuss who gets first shot at him until he gets back. Yeah .... besides that all the girls looked a bit too hot this time. Bitchy Yui, and both Russians. Oh and he got a real nice view of Blondie. Even shorty wasn't too bad. He's getting a nice harem going. |

I think even soldiers play volleyball. I think it's reasonable, especially since they are basing it on a PR stunt. I am starting to like this show. While previous episodes had a lot of action and tension (which this show does well), the characters were all one-dimensional. This was the first episode to start rounding some of the characters out. I had to score this episode a 5 instead of a 4, after Bridges' lecture to Takamura, in which he told her: first, I'll explain later, and second, that if she actually wanted what she said she wanted, she should co-operate. And then surprisingly, she accepted that. And it surprised him too. That was pretty good for an anime MC. There were a number of other nice touches in this episode as well: Manandal skipping out at the first opportunity, how Takamura acts when out of her environment, how Cryska acts regardless of hers, Bremer's good-natured hotness, how they cleared out all the other characters in a reasonable way to leave the focus on the three, how they had an appropriate sense of urgency but didn't collapse in a heap because someone might catch a cold. Hopefully, the show is about to shift into a higher gear and keep the pace up. |

Am I among the only few that does think Yui's behavior change is appropriate? I mean, in this episode the first time Yui and Yuuya talked was because a fellow comrade (doesn't matter which country) was injured, and they wanted to act rationally to help her which is a normal reaction. They behave realistically given the situation setting aside personal fueds, as both Yuuya and Yui are level-headed, rational people which should be the case as they are both elite pilots. Do people expect them to bicker and argue even when someone is in danger? As for Yui being viewed as vulnerable, it was just logical because she was injured and the most sensible thing to do was to receive help from Yuuya, considering that they did not have time to waste as Cryska might be in danger. I think they are just being level-headed; professional relationship and personal relationship are different matters. Both Yuuya and Yui are ultimately in this together (fighting aliens), and when there is a danger to someone's life (Cryska), it is not a drastic change in attitude to cooperate and compromise to solve the problem. |

Now I understand why this episode feels so disjointed. They did indeed skip something. The anime doesn’t draw attention to it at all so I imagine a lot of people didn’t notice, but in episode 5 Tarisa’s Active Eagle – the one that was damaged in the fight with Cryska and Inia – has been repaired and is back in action. So as of episode 5, Argos Flight consists of the Shiranui Second, two Active Eagles, and a Strike Eagle. And speaking of that Active Eagle, one shady aspect that isn’t really touched upon in the anime is how nobody seems to have been punished for that accident. Yuuya tests his theory by approaching Soviet territory and taking out a drone being used in an exercise by the Scarlet Twins (the anime used a similar scene in episode 5, reversing their roles). He isn’t punished for his unilateral action either, which leads him to suspect that somebody higher up desperately wants intelligence on the Scarlet Twins and their Terminator, and is covering up the incidents – Yuuya suspects it’s Heinemann. The incident with Yuuya and the drone is part of a larger storyline that has pretty much been cut from the anime. Frustrated with his new assignment, Yuuya becomes much more intrigued by the pilots who he saw take Tarisa down. He quickly figures out that they must be the strongest pilots on the base, and he intends to strike up a little rivalry with them. He takes down their drone to catch their attention. And when Argos Flight runs a simulation with them, Yuuya becomes frustrated that he can’t hope to match their score with his Fubuki. That’s also why he’s so shocked to find that Cryska and Inia are the Scarlet Twins – he can’t believe that Inia is one of the pilots he had considered his rival. Orginally from type94 (wordpress) So we actually skipped though a battle between Yuuya & the Scarlet Twins after all. What a pity. |

Explain Cryska's sudden interest in Yuuya. Just wondering, who won the fight? |

While reading comments here I could not stop thinking how badly they misjudged to air total eclipse first, instead of MLE or MLU. TE builds on top of MLA, expecting reader to know about Alternatives III and IV, expecting him to know details of american-japan history of Alt-verse, incuding american retreat which left japanese one-on-one with BETAs and so on. Yui's behaviour is not surprising at all if compared with other Royal Guards like Tsukuyomi and her squad. There's probably "Only tsunderes allowed" clause in RGs chapter. And, Takeru was in a much worse state after similar to Yui's experience. Re. "why soldiers go to beach while humanity is being eradicated" - it was explained even in TE already. BETAs are unpredictable, offensive operations are hopeless (only one ever succeeded, and it involved g-bombing), so humanity just maintains defense lines and goes with Alternative Plans as its hope to survival. XJF project is limited by developers ability to change experimental TSFs, so there is no point in keeping XJF pilots busy all the time. Really hated that Inia-bashing scene. Way to go blaming Inia for own dirty thoughts and bad emotions. |

Absolutely dreadful episode all around. I really liked the first two episodes, and even some of the episodes since, but it's clear that we're veering off into boring cliches and frustrating, nonsensical character development. |
