Blame either China or the US for doing something to them lol

Edit: Okay being serious, I assume an Earthquake and Tsunami double Major natural disaster has occurred and basically engulfed the whole Japan.

I would start keeping/selling Japanese goods for more money

I considered the possibility of this after hearing of the 2011 Sendai earthquake and subsequent tsunami, and I pretty much came up with two answers.

fantomu said:
There would be invented a Japan-clone.

This is the first. I thought that worldwide there would be a shuffle to acquire all of the rights and patents that were left in what was Japan, as no one in that country (presumably those traveling outside the country as well) would have any means of claiming ownership.

Another possible reaction that I considered was a boom in importance of (perhaps conflict over) islands between the US and China as ports of rest for trans-pacific shipping.

More economical side-effects:
Many economies/stock markets would crash, or be severely damaged by the loss of Japan.

Many technological firms and companies would attain a monopoly status in the absence of Japan.

I would honestly be in shock just cause that land mass vanished. Then I would go on all kinds of crazy theories.
Aliens, they opened a portal, Secret weapon from somewhere, stargate, Godzilla...Atlantis

Oh yeah, then would wonder if it would happen to my neighborhood.

That's what i thought of too, lol.
Honestly, this scenario sounds similar to a Hetalia doujinshi i read a while ago about Great Britain disappearing off the face of the earth due to a massive earthquake that sunk the island country. Quite similar to what the OP mentioned except that no one remembered it ever existed except for America.
Wait...No Hetalia?! The fanbase would rage and start all kinds of embarrassing rallies featuring Japan and his many pairings.

If Japan suddenly disappeared off the face of the Earth, you can bet i'd be one of those weird people making up random theories. I have a good chunk of Anime/Manga available to keep that hobby in check, but to suddenly loose a continent is horrendous to think about. I'd imagine Japanese Americans and most Anime/Manga fans might make rallies to remember the country or something. Those of Japanese descent around the world might try to create a new Japan.
I dunno. We can't be sure.

The boundary condition to this point however is that there will be no new anime and manga.

A worldwide depression would occur due to Japan being the third largest economy in the world. The IT sectors and stocks would be greatly diminished. China would inevitably along with other Southeast Asian nations replace the exportation of IT, high-end manufacturing and the worldwide fishing industry. Think bigger then the Great depression, when it comes to financial ruin. There's no past or present economic crisis that on parallel to this hypothetical scenario.

Would be an idea to keep all Japanese merchandise whilst you still have them and sell them off in the future for profit. Short-term would be an investigation to see whether Japan was engulfed by an Earthquake and Tsunami double natural disaster

If it happens, America will do what ever it needs to, to find another country that is willing to let them set up another military airbase to keep an eye on China and North Korea. which will probably set off a conflict in the south china seas.

for us anime fans we will probably turn to Korean and Taiwanese Manhwa and watch their animations. Maybe King of Hell will get Animated.

I personally would be disappointed that I never visited Kyoto and Brought a Shinsengumi Haori and visited Hijikata's Statue in Tokyo, not to mention not having bathed in a ryokan onsen.

But I will still have my large collection of Japanese Media, anime and manga which I will probably rewatch and re-read, like I do with most my stuff.

Even though I am a fan of Japan's Animation and Manga, I don't have a strong attachment to Japan itself. Kinda like if America disappeared overnight. All I would miss is Dexter, South Park, Family Guy, American Dad, Burn Notice and that would be it.

Just like if an author dies, or if a director dies.

But If it does happen, America and the UN might try to re-establish a new Japan, and to do that it might take some land in Asia Forcefully, Kinda like what they did in Palestine.

Japanese People all over then world would probably be devasted, and some might commit suicide if their family were all in Japan at the time. Others might get crazy ideas that they are the ones to lead a new Japan, which might lead to some kind of Cult.

Japan would be featured on TV Documentary's as the Island that vanished in a night. with different theories of how and where it went. Which will lead to both Atlantis Like theories and UFO theories.

China's Economy would be affected as would the rest of the world. But in the long run it might benefit Japan's Neighbours as now a competitor is out of the picture.

Some of Asia's People will be happy and may even celebrate Japans disappearence as punishment from the gods for the Atrocities the Japanese imperial army committed during world war 2.

A day where people are expected to give a minutes silence would be made to honour those gone.

China will reclaim its claimed terrotorial disputes with Japan's Islands, and will probably search for Oil and resources where Japan used to be, of course America will try to intervene.

Eroge and Visual Novels will be developed by other asian nations, and Some fans in the western nations may also get in on the action.

Danny Choo's Site would be a relic of the past, assuming he disappears aswell.
Items made in Japan will become relics and probably will be worth a bit, so people may hoard Japanese made goods.

The Federations of Kyudo and Kendo and other Japanese Martial Arts would be relocated in a western nation, Maybe in Germany or France.

Learning Japanese would be like learning Latin.

Japan would become a myth in later years similar to atlantis as people will forget Japan was once a nation and its remaining people are diluted and merged with other cultures and nationalities.

Will probably get a ton of American remakes of Japanese Movies, because the companies that make them no longer exist.

Probably expect the news to be reporting continously on Japan's Disappearence for atleast 2-3 weeks, before it returns to normal.

Well those are some of the things I can imagine will happen if Japan disappears.

4 pages in a day... New record?

If Japan disappeared, I would abandon my hopes SSB4 and once I watch all the remaining anime I will go back to video games as my exclusive form of entertainment.

For the most part, my life would continue like normal.

3. People will turn to bestiality porn b/c there's no hentai

Isn't Japan the largest producer of bestiality porn in the world?..

The better question is why/how do you know this?

HAHA yes. I was thinking the exact same thing.

I was just trolling and speculating ^.^

Anyways, I always thought the porn progression level goes like this

Level 1 - Real life
Level 2 - Hentai
Level 3 - Bestiality
Level 4 - All the fucked up illegal stuff
Level 5 - Become a serial rapist/killer

Correct me if I'm wrong ^.^

I don't think most people, including myself, will get past level 2 in their life time unless, of course, Japan suddenly disappeared.

Clearly someone already used the genie lamp option, why do you think japan exist?
just kidding. :)

But, if Japan do disappear I doubt the culture will follow. People will rebuild Japan culture, which is quite sad as probably it would be based on how Japan portrays itself to the world (or the interwebz that is) which means more weird stuff getting weird.

I'd be shocked because an entire country had just been destroyed, and that's something that wouldn't happen unless the US or Russians suddenly went crazy and decided to nuke every square kilometer of Japan. Or Aliens that are weirdly malicious, but that would be shocking in of itself.

Obviously I'd no longer have any airing anime to watch, however I think the deaths of tens of millions of people somewhat dwarfs the inconvenience caused to me, just a bit.

Well I suppose death would be a natural assumption to the whole disappearing thing but along with them being spirited away would be the loss of their contributions to the world, two of which would be anime and manga.

The loss of a civilization is incredibly sad but the loss is faceless on a global scale and most people tend to be attached to the things that civilization made.

1. The Egyptians aren't a dead civilization.
2. Nobody is mourning or remembering the death of any Egyptian outside of the famous or ones they actually know.
3. My statement said the loss of a civilization is lamentable but what is remembered more is their works rather than their individual souls, not that no one gives a shit about them dying off.
