Is she doomed to forever be stuck in the body of a pre-teen forever? 7/10 for me. It was fun, but not great. Series was good at the beginning, grabbed my attention anyway but then somewhere in the middle it fell apart D: |

Finally finished the series last night. I must say, it definately deserves at least an 8/10. A few postivie and negative comments. Negatives: 1) The fight scene between Van and Luke's teams was, as many here have stated, was to short. The series should have at least gone 2 more episodes with this final battle last a minimum of one episode. 2) The ending needed to have Luke and Tear telling how much they missed each and even hugging. But if this was a Luke/Asch merging, this would be an interesting developement between Tear and Natalia. Postive: 1) The ending had a nice bitter sweetness to it. It didn't end with a usual large parade that many shows of this caliber have. It was a quiet reuniting of friends. Almost wanted to cry (but I didn't). 2) Luke/Asch kept his promice of coming back. We knew that they wouldn't kill off the main hero, but given the way the story was going, it was possible..and I wouldn't have been mad if he was dead. 3) Tear is always looking good. That's just a personal item. ;) |

They new Luke looked awesome. Let's call him Fusion Luke. It's taking the best parts from Asch and Luke and put them together and you get a character that's really badass. Too bad Fusion Luke only gets a few minutes of the show. :( But why the heck did it take him 2 years to return? Where have he been all this time? |

totally agree, luke was totally badass at the end ^^ didnt expect it at all. I also found it disturbing that after 2 years, the crew havent changed at all, specially annise. they were wearing the same outfits, in exception of guy and natalia, which werent much different.. was it too much to draw them new sets of clothes -.- overall I give this a 6, it was entertaining but they could of made it way much better, specially at the beginning. tear is the main reason I watched th show (x luke, & guy too) she looked absolutely beautiful when she was singing at the end<3 and boy did luke looked badass, oh wait I already said that (: |

I don't want to be a downer, but this episode was kind of disappointing... The fight with Van was kinda boring, not very exciting. Probably the only good part was where Tear sang the Grand Fonic Hymn and Van started going nutso, which brought some lulz. I'm not really liking the atmosphere in the scene where Luke came back. Everyone was so smiley and hopeful. It was much more solemn in the game. I think the anime captured that scene totally wrong. But at least it wasn't as ambiguous. Unfortunately, the only scenes I did like where the ones similar to the game, such as Asch falling into Luke's arms and that satisfied smile from Jade at the end. Both of those were done well, but the rest just felt way too rushed. But still, it was nice to see this animated. :) |

i loved the anime ! the end, well we all know what tear said at the ending.. her feelings for luke "i love you" etc etc and.. i think that luke has feelings for tear as well and its up to everyone what u believe what'll happen from now on, i just know that luke+tear will come together :p and maybe.. idk they "merged" i dont give a fuck..cuz i know that it's the same luke which traveled all the time with tear together and who loves her and his last words: "i promised, didnt i?" its definitely luke ahh stop thinking too complex about all this, its just as i want it Luke+Tear => BIG BIG LOVE !!!!! ^.^ thats how i wanted it to end and i got that - missing a hug/kissing scene a bit, but well, doesnt matter ^^ enjoyed the anime, now im just sad its over Luke+Tear <3 :) edit: ah btw 10/10.. i really loved the moments between luke+tear ! edit2: well, ofc it is luke, at the end, just look at how he is wielding his sword... :) |

I liked the way it ended. But there is some contradiction because they keep saying that luke and ash are different persons, they have different feelings bla bla bla the entire anime, and in the end they merge like they were a single person. |

I liked the show. But it was confusing, short and the battles were terrible, but you know what? I'm gonna give it a 9/10, only because that's my fucking favorite game for PS2 forever! Of course, if I had not played the game, I'd probably given a 6/10 or a 7/10... |

For a final battle, that wasn't so great. The Legretta/Sync battle was better than this. Though it was cool seeing more of their artes and you're still an awesome villain, Van. Well I can't say I cared much for the story, but overall it was interesting. It's a shame that somethings weren't explained too properly, due to being rushed, and I was confused for most of the first half. This did make me want to play the game at least, which I will get to someday. |

The game was better, but I did like how they added some flashbacks in the series like Asch coming home to see Luke with his parents after the kidnapping in episode 9 (I think) that made me almost cry. Also the added scenes at the end of the series that were not in the game's ending. I was hoping they would have at least animated the spa sidequest for the lolz, but they didn't. Overall 7/10 for the anime and 9/10 for the game. |

I went into the series thinking it would be a great ride since the game was so highly praised with Symphonia, but from early on, every single character was such a faggot, well maybe except the floating thing. |

awesome-49 said: i'm thinking of watching this show but i want to know does it have good action/romance in the end can you tell that luke and tear are together as a couple in the end it has sufficient action IMO, and a happy ending. as regards romance, well, not really, unless you read from whatever subtext you prefer to concentrate on -- there is no kissing, no display of physical affection, no direct words from luke to anyone (the scene where he quotes original-luke's words back to natalia doesn't count since he only says it because she asks him, and the subtext i read there is that she's more into asch than him). there are hints of romance, but it's left open enough that people can interpret it whichever way they want to; sure, there is some canon support for luke being with tear hereafter, but if they imagine luke with guy, that works too. me, i prefer endings like that in many cases, this one included -- when the shown relationships with several people are strong, i like the creators to leave it open who ends up with whom. that way fewer of us get disappointed. :) except for the ones who need to see the kissing, but they should watch shoujo anime, ;). i liked this anime better than i had expected; i only picked it up because i like suzuki chihiro's work. i haven't played the game, and usually game-based anime leaves way too much context out. but here they put just enough in for things to hang together -- i would have preferred the tedious infodumps about fonons and planet history to be presented in a more integrated way, but oh well. i even liked the fights better than i do in most shounen anime, because they were not repetitive and there was no stupid levelling up with bigger and more ridiculous looking weapons; the CG was pretty nice. so yeah, not the best anime i've ever seen by a long shot, but not a waste of time either. and technically it was a cut above. but i still want to know where the heck luke/asch were for those two years. (asch's finger did twitch, so i presume they're both in the same body.) |

Its a solid 9/10 for me. Great character development IMO and animation for the most part. But since I never played the game, i can see why some people would rate it lower since they know that certain parts may have been edited or cut out entirely from the script. Overall it it great series and deserving more praise than it gets |

As i thought they really devoloped this episode to be good, well at least a some what average show gets a good ending. This one really caught me off guard. This episode was very well done and adapted everything that happen in the game to great detail. Although there wasn't much to finish the closure was absolutely great and i didn't actually think they were going to use the orchestra music when tear singed her final fonic hyme, but im glad they did. It just makes the music more powerful. The fight with van was also pretty good unlike all the previous action fights. Most of the characters shown off there best mystic arcs. Though i would of loved to seen luke's and van's mystic arcs which weren't shown. Oh well. Still it was a decent battle. But what really grabbed me in this episode was after van died, the ending was just great. I am a happy camper that they adapted the scenes with luke so well. They really shown how he changed when he absorbed asche, i was thinking he was going to be the same ol luke but no they kept things pretty accurate to what the game entailed. Also tear crying at the end and finally making her final statement that she actually loves luke. It was a heart warming moment. Anyways yes out of all the episodes, this one was the best. Now my complains and comparisons to what the games story and the anime has. If you don't read it, then just stop here. Other wise ill try to clear up some of things in case people get turned off by this anime series and never want to give the game a chance. By all means, please do your self a favor and play the game, it is still light years ahead of the anime in pretty much every aspect accept animation and character design of course. As most who have played the game before, this is one thing i am really upset bout that, they did not develop that much, was the characters relations. Like tear X luke, though they did finally resolve tear and luke's relationship at the end but only at the end, not really that much through out the series. Or Guy x natalia, anise and jade. Or even natalia and asche. The entire anime series lacked that kind of character depth so you really never felt that they were connected in these kinds of ways before this episode. It just wasn't strong enough. This is precisely one of the main reasons why i really enjoyed the tales of abyss game, because unlike the anime, they really developed the connections between these characters in a multitude of ways and you can see how each bonding grows stronger and stronger until this final moment when they finally truly express them selfs to each other. This is why this game has a long standing reputation of many people using fan art to depict different relations with characters. But people who just watch the anime, would never realize this as much. Because its just not stressed enough in the series. They focused mostly on the central plot, well detailing very subtle parts bout character development and of course they dedicated an episode per back story for each of the characters, which was ok. But the relationships with all the characters was severely lacking. The other thing that i particular didn't care for was of course the action in the series, but people accept its going to be like 30 min long battles for each enemy like it is in the game and thats not going to be the case, cause of 26 episodes, they have to move stuff along pretty fast. But believe most of the fans on these forums, the game is really where it has such a high reputation and not just because of its incredibly addicting gameplay, but also tales of always been known to really put thought into characters relations and story pacing. I have played all of the tales games in the franchise and this is just something that im sad to say, just doesn't really exist in the anime adaptations. I mean its there, its just very minute and not strong like it is in the game and this really kind of helps you get connected to the characters on a personal level. The anime never really gave me this impression. Perhaps if they made two seasons and kind of shown a little more back ground story for the characters and more development with all the bad guy and the good guys. It could of turned into something a bit better. But really after seeing so many anime series being adapted from video games, i am just starting to realize that it just does not work. I was going to watch valkrie chronicles next, but im not so sure. For any fans out there, you guys should still check out the game, its definitely more superior then the anime is by a long shot. That is really the reason why i have to give this a lower score. So in concluding i think a 7/10 is deserving of this anime. I might give it a 6/10 but because im such a dedicated tales fan i figure 7/10 is fine and they really did a great job on the ending to so that scored points for me. Here is a few videos btw if you want to check out some of the more compelling moments from the game. Personally i found asche's death to be a little more dramatic in the game and the fact that luke just accepted what was to come, really shown how strong he has become. Van's final battle The 7th melody and the closing scenes Luke gets his hair cut oh and lastly here is the ending scenes of the game Well there ya go, for your viewing pleasure. I still thing the music they chose for the game in the final scenes with tear and luke were actually better then the anime but both were still great. There is plenty more on youtube, but other wise play the game, its a kick ass game. |

I gave it a 6/10. Started good but I felt that lots of problems emerged later and they could have handled it better. As for whether it was luke or Asch I start by saying that I am biased, I liked luke better. There is evidence to support it being either and I have heard from a secondary source that the creators planned to have him hug tear but decided to keep the ending vague and let the viewer decide who it was. I believe that there is more evidence to support that it was luke. -Luke was more of the main character. They had their fight and luke was the victor -Asch died and flowed into luke. It had been said throughout the series that you cant revive the dead. -When he was disappearing only then did Asch's body begin to move. I believe that his 'soul' flowed into the body, a piece of asch will live on with him as said himself but lukes the 'driver' of the body -They were discussing him and not asch in the field -Emphasis was put on how he wore the sword at the end. I checked the first episode and it was the exact same way as luke does. - It was tear who approached him first and he answered her I made a promise, not the princess(which is significant to what promise he was talking about). Luke made that promise to everyone so even if it had been guy who approached him first though not as significant, it wouldn't have meant the same thing. People try to pull evidence from the game but as someone else said its best not to compare anime to its manga or game counterpart. The reinterpretation can be different. As for those who say that there wasnt any romance between him and tear, yes her confession might have gone unheard but I think that he was trying to confess to her when the two of them were alone before the final battle. |

In overall it was a very good adaption, although a lot of the scenes were swapped around, changed or completely skipped. Some characters like Astor were even completely missing. I played the game shortly before I watched it on my 3DS and noticed all the differences. |

Meh, I wanted to see a death match one-on-one but oh well, I guess this works as well. Overall, a surprising series to me. I didn't expect it much at first since I'm not a big fan of these fantasy/magic sword fighting type genres. Tears is a badass tbh even though I felt some of her character was underdeveloped. I will miss her cute expressions though :P Overall, 7/10. Not too shabby. |

Idk about the show overall, i still have my doubts, but the ending was very, VERY well done. I would give the ending a 9/10, it's very rare to find shows with such endings. They usually have unsatisfying endings but this one was good, almost as good as the one from Heroic Age. Almost. |

He only sees her as a really really good friend who happens to be a chick. You can argue, but it's the truth :/ And at the end, it's not really only Luke. Luke and Asch's body fused after Luke caught his body in the force field thing. Though Asch is technically already dead, the mass majority of that person is Luke. Read the wikia or the wiki, It explains more. Luke wanted to say "I Love you" but because he believed that announcing his feelings would cause her pain as he was unsure if he would survive past the final battle due to the continuous deterioration of his fonons. Even in-game if you read his diary you'd know he has feelings for her [/spoiler thinkgreen said: I really wanted Luke and Tear to hug in the end! Will there be a second season? Giving this an 8/10. The characters and story are captivating and the action scenes were entertaining. Though it could have been better if more artes are shown, lacks some certain quest like a coliseum event, and focuses too much on the political stuff. Overall, even though I didn't play the original game, I didn't expect this to be this entertaining. The ending scene was great in my opinion. |

The anime is a compressed form of the game. With that, all the fluff, grinding, and gameplay is removed, thus all that's left is pure story and characters. However, in that, a lot of explanations are cut for reasons of time. This is actually really interesting, where even though the series receives the full benefits of being presented in anime form, it also loses content in the transition. Still, I didn't find this to be an entirely bad show. It's most certainly rough around the edges, but it actually wrapped up okayish. I think I only started paying attention once the show started connecting all the plot points, rather than meandering and going around wrecking stuff. I'm not familiar with the game, but the show certainly got me interested, and thus the anime served its purpose. |

Well its pretty obvious that Luke also love Tear, iirc on ep 25 Luke was about to confess. But he didn't continue, probably he has no guts. Im just wondering why Luke took 2 years to return? Overall its a nice anime good art, nice story but lack of action (meele combat). 8/10 |

I really liked the anime adaptation. Especially during the first several episodes, it felt like the anime was just hitting what needed to be hit in terms of places to go and things to do. This is very understandable, seeing as what happens between places and events in the game is player-controlled game play usually involving going somewhere on the world map and fighting random battles. I think they got a little better at making the transitions smoother as the series went on. At several points throughout the series, it felt kinda rushed, but again, they had to cram a lot into 26 episodes. And they really stuck to the main story. Even with the condensed nature of everything, I thought the anime did a pretty good job of fleshing out the characters to almost the same level as they were in the game. I think Luke's drastic character development could have been handled a bit better in the anime, and yet again, I think the highly condensed nature of the anime is to blame. If I remember correctly (it's been quite a while now since I last played the game), while Luke's change was really just about a 180 in both the anime and the game, because the game was paced better, it was able to show Luke struggling at first, making missteps while trying to change, whereas in the anime it's less nuanced. One thing that I loved about the anime is how well it captured the characters' views and feelings regarding having to fight people they were close to or had strong attachments towards, but who had come to have very different opinions on how things should be fixed. It didn't sugarcoat it or make it like one side is good/right and the other is bad/wrong. And when the battles are over, it's not a happy moment to rejoice, but a heavily bittersweet one (and really, more bitter than sweet), where the characters are glad they're accomplishing their goals, but are really torn and hurting because they had to kill people they had a very strong connection with to reach those goals. The game never sugarcoated this, and I love how faithful the anime was in this regard. I really liked how they handled most of the battles, having them be fast-paced and hectic, with several things going on at once. The anime really captured the nature of the battles from the game, although I would have liked to have seen more techs from more characters (especially some more Mystic Artes). Really, the magic users (and primarily Jade), were the only ones who got the grand treatment when it came to showing off their artes. I really liked how they seamlessly integrated the boss battles as part of the story. I wish they'd made the final battle with Van more epic, though. Length-wise, I didn't think it was too bad, though if they'd made it a *little* longer, I don't think it would have hurt. I honestly expected there to be a comedy/fan-service episode based around the hotel in Keterburg. One thing I really wish they'd done was to include the epic optional Nebilim fight in that crag near Keterburg as a part of bringing closure to Jade's past. I think it would have been really awesome to witness, and also very emotionally powerful. As far as things that were new to the anime adaptation, I have to agree with another poster that I really liked the scene when Asch returned to the Fabre manor, only to see Luke being coddled in his place. Regarding the whole "is it Luke or Asch at the end" thing, it's clearly Luke. My thoughts on how that all went down are that, as Luke's body's fonons are dissipating, Asch's body's fonons fill in those gaps. So it's not quite a "Luke's mind/soul in Asch's body" thing. In both the game and the anime, fonons are essentially like atoms, and dissipation happens bit by bit. Also, it has to be Luke by default since Asch clearly died (his fonons went into Luke's body, which the doctor told Asch would happen if/when he dies). Asch's body still existed, but his consciousness didn't (because he's dead). In contrast, Luke's body was dissipating, but his consciousness was still going strong. It seems like consciousness isn't necessarily tied to the physical body, but it does end when the person dies. If it was just Luke's mind/soul in Asch's body, then he should've been right-handed, but as others have mentioned it's clearly shown that his sword is worn in a way that's oriented for a left-handed person. In general, even though I thought it was handled really well given the number of episodes they were working with, I honestly think that the anime adaptation would have been a lot better off if it had run over three cours instead of two (26 episodes is 2 cours, right?). I think this would have allowed for better flow and pacing overall, and probably would have given them the room they needed to show at least some of the missing nuance (particularly Luke's initial struggles at changing himself). That added time could have also given them the room to explore a couple of the more notable (Nam Cobanda Island, complete with its Pac-Man elevator, and the Keterburg Resort) and important (the awesome optional Nebilim fight) side-quests from the game. I would also really love to hear this dubbed, since I really liked the English voices for the game. According to MAL, FUNimation has the license, so it would be really awesome if they dubbed it, and even more awesome if they were able to get the voice actors from the game, since they all had really strong performances. I don't think it's entirely inconceivable since, according to a quick search on Wikipedia, most of the voice actors are still active in dubbing things (anime, games, etc.). |

My thoughts: Such a good story...however ravaged by cliched scenes, childish dialogue all around, lack of a proper budget, and poor directing. I don't want to think it was made just for the PS2 fans, but it was meh. I mean showing popups of moves in the first few episodes, but discontinued later was the only improvement in quality. THe story had plotholes that oculd have been explained(not the writers fault). Glaringly obvious errors =/. Poor series to receive such a poor anime, when it could have been close to a masterpiece. There was no doubt that the story was good, but the execution was so palpably flawed that ruined all emotional appeal that the show could have gotten. Could have been MUCH better... Seriously, how the hell did he come back? Oh yea, the explanations not there. Guess left to the viewer's discretion lol. The average anime viewer would go WTF, this show isn't made for anime watchers, but geared much more to the people who actually played the game. The show doesn't care about anime watchers is the impression I'm getting. Below my average anime watch due to many technical flaws, but there is no doubt, yes, no doubt that the story of the show is good. Overall: 6/10 |

Because of animes like Tales of the abyss, I always now make sure to scout a series for reviews, rating, etc. Unfortunately, I had already spent too much time into this anime, so I could not simply drop it... It was grueling to finish... but I did it! 3/10. |

It was grueling to finish... but I did it! 3/10. Same here, i checked top 4 reviews and it had pretty good score, but man, i was annoyed so much. Luke was annoying from episode 1 till episode 8 becuase of his childish behaviour. Then for the next few episodes he was quiet and actually really enjoyable character. But then he started go all out with classic "shounen" lines which made me even more annoyed. I laughed so much how he used word "TRUST" so easly after he lost the same from everyone. I trust you Guy, i trust you Jade, i trust you ????... I dont know why i keep going back to shounen anime even though they all have the same type of annoying MC. Maybe i hope that there is hidden gem which is similar to FMA. Another retarded thing in this anime is Luke's clothes, why the hell he has open belly button and why does he has dog collar on his hand? Was it not enough that he was annoying, he needed to look retarded as well. Why is there no anime where MC is more like Jade, badass with clear mind. Also, they had amazing party, 2 healers in the team, why the hell they didnt use them activly during the fights, they could save some people who died (Arietta and Ion for example). But, leaving details aside, this show had good sides too. Story was interesting and when i was not annoyed i enjoyed it. But after episode 8 you get used to it so you can actually start enjoying it. I can only say that soundtrack was amazing, they did really good job arranging it so storytelling felt better. Art was normal for this age, except same clothing all the time, characters had pretty good design. I wanted to give it 6 for most part of the show, but i decided to give it 7 instead since it did had good points. |

Gotta say, this was the one time I was crossing my fingers and hoping for Luke to return by the end. Although he seemed different, he sounded a bit more like Asch and had the longer, darker hair. When he free'd Lorelei, it showed him disappearing as life began to twitch in Asch's body. It makes me wonder if they finally became one or if Luke took Asch's place now that he was gone. Either way, I really like these last minute reunion scenes and it reminded me a great deal of another anime that does this too. Overall it was quite an adventure and certainly filled with fun and intrigue. It started off lighthearted so I wasn't expecting all of the drama and body count. Although honestly I feel like there wasn't much of an attachment for characters such as Sync and the other God-Generals. I feel they could have spent more time on fleshing out the characters and less on the whimsical plot twists. It was also a bit comical how all of the main cast was conveniently together all of the time, as if they couldn't just admit they enjoyed being a party. But minor nitpicking aside, it was a standard fare of fantasy and adventure. My interest in the Tales franchise (both as games and anime) was piqued about a month ago and this was a nice reassurance that I want to continue to explore it. 7/10 KingKongShrest said: They usually have unsatisfying endings but this one was good, almost as good as the one from Heroic Age. All on all this was a pretty good adaption for a game. The only drawback is lack of action and character interaction. Due to time constraints it's unavoidable.. but the did good nonetheless. They make do with just sufficient development to understand the characters. The actions were under expectations but still done well on some of them. Tear suits her name I guess.. I was hoping for a kiss or hug LOL. I enjoyed the journey anyway.. it was a nice story. It would be nice if there's a ova or something. That's just wishful thinking though. |

Finally this disaster is over. Between the cringeworthy voice acting, the half-baked plot, terrible pacing, and unlikable characters I found it extremely difficult to enjoy this series. Considering this is an adaptation from a game I am going to assume huge chunks of content were cut out left and right in order to make this fit in 26 episodes. The only redeeming factor of this series was the excellent OP. It was the only thing that encouraged me to watch the next episode. I wish I could have enjoyed this series as much as other people have. |

26 episodes of exposition. Well not really, but for a series that's relatively simple in its story, it sure uses tons of jargon, and make it harder to follow. Based on this installment, I suppose the Tales series really isn't for me, there's way too much time spent on its story which isn't impressive, over the characters. Speaking of character, the protagonist, Luke, has presence so low that if he wasn't the protagonist I probably would've forgotten that he even existed. He's too passive for a protagonist, not to mention, annoying as hell. His existence alone ruined the entire experience of the Abyss series for me. I know he was made annoying on purpose at the beginning of the series, but because of that I really couldn't get into the series, and in addition to that, it felt forced. Then comes his "development", all of the sudden he's a new man, a 180 change, zero process, straight from point A to point B. I personally am not a fan of that sort of (lack of) development, I want to see the process where Luke actually go from point A to point B, and not just change in a click. It's like watching an entirely different character. Terrible. It's not like he's any more tolerable after his "development". The romance between Luke and Tear was sooo cringey, for one reason, that it was really forced. There's zero chemistry between them, there wasn't even any reason why she should really pay much attention to that guy. The supporting cast is nothing to write home about, basically everyone has a terrible past and writer is trying to make you feel for them. Unfortunate to say, it didn't work for me. Honestly felt like a total waste of time watching this series. The only characters I liked were Ion and Asch. |

6/10 I enjoyed the game more. As an anime the story felt incredibly dragged and bored me (a story inside a story of a story which never finishes....maybe I also don't remember that it was THAT slow paced) The visual and music though were very nice. As a sum up "it was alright, but nothing special" ;) |
