That ghost has become one of my favorite character O.O

I mean...she's so righteous and actually kind. Though lonely, she's still cheerful.

What will happen to her afterwards? Is she going to be all alone forever? That's kinda sad... :'(

Natsume~ thank god the child you were actually being loved by someone (in this case, ghost)

Though I've known the story by reading the manga, this episode's so great and heartwarming.

5/5 perfect!!

Tell me the name of that ghost!!!!! >< It has been such a long time since I found a female character that suit my taste..It's rare!

Still there will be no Matoba in the next ep..

This episode is absolutely beautiful.

And Natsume is beyond beautiful - he transcends humanity. I bet his heart shines like the sun. <3

The manga certainly elaborated on Natsume's childhood, but with the episode this brilliantly done I can't possibly complain about not seeing more. Though I kinda just did. This youkai was wonderful - her name deserves to be known. The scene where the youkai takes on a cat form and sheds tears and the one where she hugs Natsume are so precious. The parallel with Touko-san's story was a brilliant touch, too.

Another great episode. Natsume sure attracts the pretty females - human or youkai.

It's too bad Sensei was there, otherwise Natsume could have made-out with the pretty youkai girl all afternoon... <L> (imagine the fangirls raging at that... <LOL>)

Lol, I'm sure he can attract males too. He's a mixture of coolness and cuteness. Like someone said, he transcends humanity.

pretty nice episode. an interesting take on perspective.

and madara's whine about ramen was a bit....unbecoming of the great youkai that he is.

That was the best part! Madara is always like a kid when it comes to food.

One thing I really like about this series is the fact that we don't get the oh so popular; tsundere's and pokerfaced bishounen's, just nice characters who don't have too much to say and don't over-react over nothing.

Natsume visiting the spirit after growing up was sweet; I wonder if he crossed her over?

According to the manga, she didn't cross her over. The only time any crossing over happens is when a youkai is near death. I would have liked to see their conversation after the hug though. It would have been nice to see her as a supporting character after this event happened.

I agree, Madara's whining scene was the best part, I actually thought it was pretty funny when he kept whining and saying iku!. heh
And also agree on the supporting character idea. I liked how her character played out.

Not a bad story. But it's one of the standard stories for Natsume Yujinchou series; dealing with loneliness. It's also kind of crafty to illustrate a spirit as a beautiful girl or a cute small animal. (Yes, I don't deny I like such settings after all.)

Although I am not a keen fan of the series, I remember a similar story like this episode.
I watched the episode again. It was more straightforward, more condensed and more emotional than the latest, I think. If you haven't watched it, try it. If you already have watched it, try it again. You may find something new after watching the latest episode. This Natsume's phrase is my finding:
It seems he has changed a little comparing to these two episodes.

My favorite episode from this season so far, without doubt.

It was rather unexpected that the one the youkai remember was Natsume, and not Reiko; it was refreshing seeing a different perspective of his childhood, told from the youkai’s view, as all we got to see before this episode were only tidbits of his past.

A brilliantly executed episode; it was dedicated entirely to memories, displaying at the same time the contrast between the past Natsume — a lonesome child, who disliked both humans and ayakashi — and the one we’ve seen change, gradually opening up and embracing that piece in the puzzle of his life he’d rejected years ago.

I felt it was really touching how neither of them forgot about the other, despite the time and circumstances surrounding their first meeting. I adored the scene in which the youkai transformed into a kitty and went to find Natsume. And she cried. It made want to shed a tear with her. And so, both were lonely; but at last, neither of them is anymore.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

This episode was so cute, definitely the one I've liked most so far this season. Chibi Natsume is SO adorable omg. I was expecting ep 3 to be focused more on his past, but it wasn't really, so I was a little disappointed. But this episode fulfilled all my expectations. :)

Ah I can't help but drown myself in the way they packed the story. I let myself tear up like a ball of emotion. I've been quite the flat one who seeks reality in stories but for natsume, d'awww.

Especially since it talks about loneliness again... the sad disease that's spreading even faster in our dear globalized world.

The tears. Why won't they stop? T_T

And yet again, an episode that one-ups the last. The second season, for whatever reason, didn't resonate with me as much as the first season did. I don't know why really. Just wasn't very emotionally invested. This season, however, is serving as a reminder of why I love the series so much. Episodes like these are the kind you remember for years to come. Truly a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned.

Along with the excellent direction, what worked so perfectly was that we were treated to a story from the yokai's point of view instead of Natsume's. Loneliness may be all over the place here, but hey, it's a key theme, and I'm sure many of us can identify. The icing on the cake, of course, was getting to know more about Natsume's childhood, his continuing development, and how they neatly tied Touko's story in the beginning to the whole episode. Yeah. Brilliant direction indeed.

Top 5 episode of the whole series, I'd say.

Can this show get any sweeter? DEFINITELY NOT!! Damnit, it's like 100 degrees right now and my entire body is filled with goosebumps. What I love about this series is how it can make me feel and this episode was the very epitome of that feeling. But what is this that I feel? I cannot put it into words; I feel bliss, melancholy, lonely, joyful, all in one and more! Even ten minutes after the episode was over I was still shedding some tears. And to think this is only the fourth episode~

OK, I cried once but it was intense at the part below,

When that youkai hugged Natsume, it was very emotional like I mentioned.

It really is getting better and better by just being stable in its presentation of delivering the right time of emotional response. My crying may have been a lot less than last episode but it was as intense as from the one before, just more sudden and intense.

One of the best episodes of the first three seasons. For some reason I couldn't help but think of W.B.Yeats great poem "The Stolen Child":

...Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

My heart really went out to Natsume in this episode, more than in any other episode.

I was close to getting tears in my eyes when he cuddled into the spirit's kitten form, and how he still remembered her after all that time, and her with him too.. but dat reuniting hug *eyes tear up* ..it's been another very touching episode.

I really like the spirit from this episode, she's probably my favourite that we've been introduced to so far.
