interesting episode. the art for the animes this season is pretty good. Especially liked the vibrant colors used in this first episode. The art used for the Japanese mythology intro part was bizarre, never seen something like it before. The animation is a bit awkward but I like the large palette of colors used in the background. The oceanic setting is really scenic. The quirkiness of this anime is charming.

Have you ever had one of those colorful pillow mints? This show is kind of like that. It's not necessarily refreshing in the mindblowing or unique sense, but it's something that I would love to watch as a pick-me-up towards the end of the day.

I'm a bit worried about the "saving the world" plot that seems to be coming. I'm sure it has something to do with the folktale in the intro and the talking fish (who is probably the princess/goddess or something?), but I'll hope for the best.

XD Aw, I think this show is pretty cute so far.

0.0 Maybe it's just my weakness for Miyu Irino though, but maybe not. ^_^ Still, it puts Haru on my "I-gotta-give-this-guy-a-glomp" list. XD

I love the concept of fishing, and Yuki's fear of public speaking reminds me of my own: a regular ol' fish-out-of-water. ^_^ But I'll keep going with this show now!

I. THINK. IM. GONNA. DIE!!!
This is so beautiful! Please! Please! Kill me right now! I can't believe this season is too good to be true with Uchuu Kyoudai, Apollon, Shirokuma Cafe, and NOW ......... TSURITAMA!!!!

everytime i saw an anime with a beautiful background i always wants to cry in happiness, and so far i think Tsuritama and TekkonKinkreet is the best in background art yet. awwww just remembering all the building shape and the color and the sky, oh everything is just oh so beautiful!!

AND... HARU!!! OMG i rarely find male character moe, but he is so cute please let me rape him KYAAAAAAAA!!!!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So noitaminA stands true to its latest trend and continues with a social-issues theme. We had BL in Fractale, transgender in Hourou Musuko, psychiatric diseases altogether in Trapeze, utopias and tyranny in Guilty Crown and Fractale, NEETs in Higashi no Eden, hikkies in Kuragehime.
And this time it's focused on panic attacks caused by personality complexes. Not bad, but nothing really spectacular so far. What actually feels weird is the pacing and directing. Didn't expect this from Nakamura-sensei at all. Now I have a bad feeling that the entire show might turn out as bad as his previous work "C" did.
So I'm really looking forward to improvements. I want to see it shiny as Mononoke and Trapeze are. And bright colours are definitely not enough for that to happen.
I'm also surprised people got the penguindrum vibe from the show. Didn't get that at all. I wonder what made you felt that way. I don't mean to offend in any way of course. I'm really interested.
What this show reminded me the most is probably Kuragehime. Because of those aquarium and fishes. Oh well. let's see. I still have faith for this show to get better.

I am kinda interested in fishing so this anime interest me a little. But i dont get how fishing will save the world. Guess ill just have to watch to see.

When I was a teen my buddies liked to fish so I'd go with them even though I had no interest in it. I'd put a sinker on my line and toss it out in the water for appearances, and then pop open the first of my six-pack of whatever it was I had managed to get an older friend to get for me that evening. By the 4th can it didn't matter if was I catching anything or not, and by the 6th can I'm sure I was in the frame of mind to believe I could save the world had somebody asked me to.

I don't get your issue with the pacing and directing -- it feels like Nakamura is back, finally. I could tell it was him without even knowing if I had to. Nobody else does axial cuts like he does, esp. with the sound cues.

As for Penguindrum comparisons -- it's because of "studio heritage" and stylistic similarities in direction, staging, and image composition. Nakamura's style is definitely influenced by [Penguindrum, Revolutionary Girl Utena director] Kunihiko Ikuhara (and by proxy, Shigeyasu Yamauchi & Osamu Dezaki) and [Summer Wars, Girl Who Leapt Through Time, various things director] Mamoru Hosoda (who considers Ikuhara his mentor.) This is likely due to their tenure at Toei Animation. Stylistic influences runs abound within studios like that.

I recommend reading this write-up written by somebody else + the comments for further elaboration, because I am a very lazy person -- http://aninomiyako.wordpress.com/2011/11/13/ikuhara-school-directors-utenas-legacy/

I think everything about this episode is COOL, well, maybe except Yuki and his personality. His grandma is stylist and young, indeed. The art here is refreshing and modern. The OP and ED are nice too. Great start. I'm whistling. Pretty interesting artwork and was well presented. I will be following this show this season.

I think Haru really is an Alien with a high tech water gun.
Think about it, it's a sci-fi show, Haru calls himself a alien because he doesn't know people would find it weird, he doesn't have a home, he was making the fish move in a group at the start of the show. Plus he's talking about saving the world.

*facepalm* you don't say?

That was fantastic :D really quirky and fun to watch.

I was gonna give it a try at first just b/c of Uki Atsuya's art, but really pleasent suprise. Animation was really colourful as well.

Who knew you could make an anime about fishing interesting? lol.

Now the only thing i'm worrying about is the 'save the world' thing that's coming up. I hope that doesn't ruin it

I'm liking the slice-of-life, relaxed feeling mixed with Kenji Nakamura's trademark quirkiness. It feels just weird enough to make it entertaining to watch but not so much weirdness that it makes the show unwatchable. The excellent OST, the vibrant colours, and the awesome cast of seiyuu all help, too.

Still, right now, all the entertaining bits feel like a gimmick so I'm hoping they can keep this sort of material going without having it overdone or going way into the deep end, like they did with [C].

As a side note, I laughed when Yuki was having difficulty deciding whether to give up his seat on the train because the guy was old but not very old! Hahaha, definitely been there and it's awkward as hell.

lovely first episode, the concept feels unique, art is just my type, the characters are funny, the atmosphere is soft, the BGMs are great, the comedy is laughable, ED song is good, really reminds me of Kuragehime and Natsume Yuujinchou.

well, i dont see anything wrong with Haru, he's an "alien", and i wont expect him to do "normal" stuff. still, 5/5 for me.

Oh Wow!! Thanks a lot for the amazing link. Really enjoyed reading it! The only thing is… It didn’t really help to get the Penguindrum vibe from the series. Hosoda Mamoru influences? Yes, definitely. Perhaps a little bit of “Ponyo”? True. Kuragehime – yes, absolutely. But Ikuhara…? No, just no. You could easily say that about Trapeze, but Tsuritama… No, not in my books at least. I mean I can see the details here and there that could or do refer to Ikuhara, but in comparison to Utena and Penguindrum they are so minor and their amount, the amount of symbolism and other Ikuhara’s notable traits seem to me so, so-o-o-o lacking.
As for what exactly I didn’t like about the pacing and directing, I think the proper word to describe that would be the scene timing. All scenes felt too short as they changed very roughly. And the axial cuts you mentioned above didn’t really help to decrease this “flickering”. It was really disturbing, and it certainly added a rushing feeling to a pretty calm slice-of-life story. This would be fine for an action series, no doubt, but in Tsuritama it felt wrong and kinda ruined those beautiful scenes for me, didn’t let me perceive and enjoy the visual information of each scene in all its glory. It’s interesting though, that these timing issues started only after the OP. The Intro was indeed very strong. It’s a real pity if that was caused just by the noitaminA’s 11-ep limitation.
And there was another thing that I didn’t like. Focus. The episode was focused primarily on Yuki and his panic attack disorder. Or so it seemd it me. Of course, he’s the male lead and his character must be properly introduced and developed in the first episode. But it shouldn’t hurt the rest of the story and other characters, in my opinion. That Indian guy with a goose, what was he introduced for now? Just to add some suspense? But he didn’t get enough of screen time within the episode to actually bring the suspense! Same goes to the “save the world” phrase. I’ve almost lost it, keeping my attention to Yuki’s psychological problems as well as his interaction with Haru.
I don’t know, perhaps, it was only me who perceived the show like that. Or perhaps it was even intently directed to introduce these enormously weird things in a very natural way, hidden as much as possible behind Yuki’s personality. Who knows, but I would very much appreciate if the show were clearer with the genre it tries to depict. Is it a supernatural story? Or is it a slice of life drama? It sure looked like the latter 95% of the time. But this just cannot be true if you follow the metaphor from the very beginning of the episode and consider Haru’s character.
To sum it up, the first episode felt too plain and normal to me. The accents on matters crucial to the story were not properly highlighted. Just give a watch to the first episode of Utena or Penguindrum, or even Mononoke or Trapeze and you’ll definitely notice the difference.

On a side note:
It's interesting that Yuki, Haru, and Natsuki are all female names and together with Akira (that Indian guy with a goose) they represent four seasons of the year:
YUKI - means snow, i.e. winter
HARU - means Spring
NATSUki - has Summer as the first kanji in the name
AKIra - has the Autumn part
I wonder if Akira is the antagonist in the story. The way he spies on Haru, the way he has been opposed to other three guys ending up together in the first episode, and the way he's the only one with a male's given name... he seems like one. But from the description of the show on MAL he might be not. We'll see, I guess

So, does Kimi to Boku really get better? Because for me, right now, it's really boring. I was a bit worried that Tsuritama was going to bore me too. I'm glad it didn't Judging from first episodes at least, I have to say that Tsuritama's first episode >>>>> Kimi to Boku's first episode. Tsuritama managed to do something that Kimi to Boku didn't: it captivated me. Of course, this can all change the farther I progress into both series.

Anyway, back on topic... I got some serious Ponyo vibes from watching this. It seems I'm not the only one either. It reminded me of my favorite part in the movie, which was after the ocean had flooded everything and everything was underwater and there were fishies everywhere.

What "Adolescence" do you have?
Do you remember "Childhood"?
The irreplaceable one existed there.
