I thought it would be worth compiling a list of series here that are technically not WMT series, but are similar enough that WMT fans would probably enjoy them (once we finish watching all the WMT of course ^_^). I figure it would be easier to have these in one place than following a chain of recommendations on the series pages. They are all similar in that they are based on old novels or stories, and they often have that same sort of character design. Sometimes they are mistaken for WMT series.

Some of the ones I can think of are:

Meiken Jolie (aka Belle and Sebastian): based on the French novels by Cécile Aubry about boy and his dog wandering to reunite with his mother.

Kaze no Shoujo Emily: based on the Emily of New Moon books by LM Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables (which has a WMT series)

Watashi to Watashi - Futari no Lotte: based on the book "Das Doppelte Lottchen" by Erich Kästner, which was the same book that Disney's 'Parent Trap' movies were based on.

The Snow Queen - based on the Andersen tale, a young heroine on a journey.

Anime Sanjushi and Anime Sanjushi - Aramis no Bouken - Anime version of the Three Musketeers and its sequel.

Oz no Mahou Tsukai- anime version of the OZ books by L Frank Baum

Takarajima - based on Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Secret of Cerulean Sand - A young girl journeys through a strange land to find her brother

Huckleberry no Bouken - Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Based on the Mark Twain novel. There is a Tom Sawyer WMT.

Alice in Wonderland - based on the classic by Lewis Carroll.

Girl in the Wind: Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair - ok, not based on a book, but based on an old song :)

Oyayubi Hime (Thumbelina) - a young girl is shrunk to a tiny size, and embarks on a perilous journey to retun home

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils - a young boy is shrunk to a tiny size and travels with a flock of geese while trying to find a way home and back to normal

Ashita no Nadja - A young girl discovers she is not an orphan after all, and embarks on a journey to find her mother.

*claps* Great, great list! Your anime knowledge never ceases to amaze me.

As for other series, I can only think of a handful...

Nobobody's Boy Remi (Ie Naki Ko), plus a movie and another movie, all based on the same novel that Noboby's Girl Remi came from.

Actually, I had another one in mind but I already forgot it. ^_^;

That's a good idea. These are the ones I thought about:

Wanwan Sanjushi - 1981 - based on Alexandre Dumas's novel "Les Trois Mousquetaires" (The Three Musketeers) (1844)

Pinocchio Yori Piccolino no Bouken - (1976-1977) - based on Carlo Collodi's book "The Adventures of Pinocchio" (1883)

The following are not based on books but they still remind me of the WMT style:

Wakakusa no Charlotte - (1977-1978)

Hello! Sandybell - (1981-1982)

Honey Honey no Suteki na Boken - (1981-1982)

Mirai Shounen Conan - I like it for the same reasons I like WMT works, it had the same kind of feel for me : D It's something Miyazaki worked on early on, if that's saying anything : D http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=302

For something more recent, I think the currently airing Kemono no Souja Erin is shaping out to be a nice candidate for this list. Though not perfect, it has many of the typical WMT elements and seems to be a very good anime overall.

A big thanks for MagicalEmi for the helpful topic!

I finished yesterday one of the greatest epic episodes I have ever watched.

I speak of Animated Classics of Japanese Literature http://myanimelist.net/forum/?animeid=4723

A russian fansub released three random episodes ripped from a US DVD recently. Just watch episode 25 and 26, "The Harp Of Burma". I watched it last night and I'm still moved by it.

Furusato Japan

Fresh subs from [Medgirl].
This is traditional family-oriented cartoon with historical settings. Explores human relationship and heavenly based on japanese culture. Some similarities with Nitaboh(same director, art) or Junkers Come Here(themes, style). Also the drawing and character's design is a bit more "japanese" counter to the common animes where characters drawn in a more western-style.

Both have just appeared at bakabt tracker. They're in engdub, what is not preferred option for many of you. But given the rarity of these animes, not much of a choice here, i guess.

Nobody's mentioned another version of Dog of Flanders called Dog of Flanders: My Patrasche. Unlike the WMT version, this anime was made in 1992-1993 by TMS Entertainment and is 26 episodes long. Unfortunately, the Japanese version has apparently gone up in smoke (IT'S NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!!!) and I only managed to find Italian and Arabic versions. I've seen most of it and I really love it!

Kojika Monogatari - based on the 1938 novel The Yearling by Majorie Kinnan Rawlings which won the Pulitzer Prize a year later

This has got to be the most calm and peaceful anime openings out there. The English opening is even more chilled and relaxing since there's no singing involved. You can watch the intro and most of the episodes in English in VHS quality here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/siberiantigr5

Also, let's just steal this Italian Wikipedia page on WMT and call it a day =) They have a complete list on literature outside of Japan adapted into anime.

I tried looking for the raws right now but no DVDs have ever been released for this series! It might have something to do with MGM Studios owning the license or rights to the Yearling movies.

Anyways, it seems counterproductive of me to recommend this non-WMT since we can't fully watch it :'(

Although it's art style and altered setting doesn't really fit in with a lot of the other WMT-type anime, Gankutsuou is based on The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. There are definitely some artistic licenses taken with it, but it's an excellent anime, to be sure.

Yuki no Joou (The Snow Queen)
I just finished watched the first episode of this anime serie and all nostalgic and glad feelings of the World Masterpiece Theater anime series raised in me again.

This anime was produces by TMS Entertainment (the same producer of Ie Naki Ko). And broadcasted by NHK in 2005-2006 (and re-exhibited in 2011 in BS-Premium channel).

There is a Russian animation based on The Snow Queen tale.
the reason i bring it up here is that this movie helped inspire a depressed Miyazaki out of his slump while he was working at Toei. iirc, this may have been a catalyst for his desire to start directing and moving out on his own, setting up outside of Toei as Toei headed in directions of lower budget more mass-appeal garbage fashioned after the success of some inexpensive but wildly popular anime TV series of the day.
or something like that.
the movie is quite good, if you have no problem watching 1950s animation (I love it)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Snow_Queen_(1957_film)
here is how they tell the part of the Miyazaki influence (a bit diff than what i read elsewhere):

Influence

Hayao Miyazaki has stated that this film is one of his inspirations to work in animation. When he started his career, Miyazaki had a rough start and was thinking of leaving animation already. When he saw The Snow Queen, he admired it and continued working in anime. In September 2007, it was announced that Studio Ghibli will be distributing this film through their Ghibli Museum Library label and it was released in December 2007 (in the original Russian audio with Japanese subtitles).

I guess there were Eng dubs done for it (looks like several), but, even if you are a dub fan I recommend not going for these version, as they changed all the music, edited it, etc. or atleast the ones that I can find clips of.

you can find one of (atleast) the dubbed version on youtube to sate your curiosity, but please watch the subbed original ;)

Does anyone here have a Netflix account? For those interested in Oz no Mahou Tsukai / The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, you can watch all 52 episodes in English here: Netflix

If you don't have Netflix, you can also watch it at Jaroo's website: Jaroo
They show only five episodes at any given time but rotate them.

You can also watch all 52 episodes on YouTube: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in English (TV Series 1986)

Unlike many of your WMT and meisakus in general, this series is pretty damn well documented!

Back in '05 when I got the news that the legendary Dezaki was directing a new series in the WMT vein, I was in absolute bliss, even more after I started watching it, even though it's modern series, Dezaki had not lost his touch and the series were extremely entertaining. Live-Evil are finally on the last episodes, after all these years. :)

I was so surprised to see that no one had mentioned ANY of the anime from Toei's Sekei Meisaku Douwa (World Children's Classics) series until now!

Tōei Dōga produced a number of wonderful films/series in the 1980s that I would recommend from that series, but these are my favourites:

The Wild Swans: based off the Hans Christian Andersen story.

Twelve Months: based on the fairy tale by Samuil Marshak.

Not part of the same series, but still a WONDERFUL film that I highly recommend to fans of this caliber of anime:

Gah, I can't stand the English dub. And they change the excellent Japanese music too (watched it dubbed in my local language with the proper music).

I'm watching it raw on Nicovideo instead. Loved all the comments from the fans of the show there. Feels like I'm watching with them.

If manga counts, then I'd add Daisuke Igarashi's works too, such as Little Forest and Children of the Sea.

Little Forest actually has a very good live-action adaptation. The first half Summer/Autumn has been translated into English. It feels very much like WMT anime.

Oh God, I'm now watching Fantastic Children and it's amusing how much it has WMT elements while being far away from a WMT show.

First of all, it's made by Nippon Animation, so they can freely enter WMT cameos into it. The MC has a monkey pet named Amedio that looks exactly the same like Marco's Amedio. There's also a dog doll that resembles Baron and another character names his dog Baron.

Then, the themes. It has a quiet girl being bullied by an asshole orphanage director and she may or may not be a princess. Then there's the strong emphasis on family with how the protags are a bunch of 11-year old orphans. And there's also the roadtrip aspect of them searching all over the place for the person they want to meet.

It's far away from an actual WMT show though, since it's basically science fiction with heavy emphasis on mystery. Also has robots reminiscent of Laputa.

I really, really recommend it. This one definitely is an underrated gem.

I need a bit of help here. I'm looking for anime based on classic literature that's non-WMT and that's currently available with english subs

So far I have:

Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas)
Ie Naki Ko (Sans Famille, Hector Malot)
Takarajima (Treasure Island, R.L. Stevenson)
Romeo x Juliet (Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare)
Kaze no Shoujo Emily (Emily of New Moon, L.M. Montgomery)
Agatha Christie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple (Various, Agatha Christie)
Soukou no Strain (A Little Princess, Frances Hodgson Burnett)
Sanzoku no Musume Ronja (Ronia, the Robber's Daughter, Astrid Lindgren)
Hakugei Densetsu (Moby Dick, Herman Melville)
Yuki no Joou (The Snow Queen, Hans Christian Andersen)
Fushigi no Umi no Nadia (20.000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne) -I'm being nice by considering this one-
Mirai Shounen Conan (The Incredible Tide, Alexander Key)
The Secret of Cerulean Sand (The Barsac Mission and Facing the Flag, Jules Verne)

Any ideas? I'm mostly looking for series, not movies. For now, I've only listed western literature for now (which is why Aoi Bungaku Series, for example, is not there), but I accept ideas from Eastern Literature.

Per Wikipedia, The Secret of Cerulean Sand is "loosely based on two works by Jules Verne; his posthumous 1919 novel The Barsac Mission as well as his 1896 novel Facing the Flag". The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has an English dub available, but no subs, I believe.

Interested to see what others may know of though. And thanks for compiling your list too - I wasn't aware of the "looser" examples you listed here like Hakugei, Strain, and Nadia.

I was actually aware of The Wizard of Oz, which I knew it had spanish dubs, but I wasn't sure about english, so I chose not to list it (also, I'm still not sure if I want to consider dubbed only... I guess it doesn't hurt if it has a disclaimer).

I had no idea The Secret of the Cerulean Sand was loosely based on Jules Verne's work. I was even going to add it after seeing it in the OP, but then erased it thinking it was not actually adapted from anything.

Others have pointed out Sanzoku no Musume Ronja and Mirai Shonen Conan. I would like to add another Ghibli-related work which I thought to be a WMT anime a little while ago.

Meitantei Holmes aka Sherlock Hound
1984, anime series (26 ep), directed by Hayao Miyazaki
Based on Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
"He isn't dead, San. He is here with us now, telling us, it's time for both of us to live."
"And slowly... You come to realize..."
"They come without asking, and then they leave just the same.
