Before anyone wants to bash me for creating this thread, here me out. In the show, it's explicitly mentioned in the show that elves lack reproductive instincts and romantic desires. It's canonically confirmed that she doesn't experience any sort of romantic/sexual attraction to any person.

It's weird that there are so many Frieren fans denying that she is asexual. It's not speculation or headcanon, it's explicitly mentioned within the text of the show. People should stop coping and accept the canon imo especially people who ship her with Himmel.

Her character may be, but it seems some of her fans aren't. Put legs and a cute smile on a rock and I'm sure someone will want to f*ck it.

As long as the story doesn't feed the thirsty beast too much, I guess I don't care.

Well later in the manga it was rather clearly shown that Himmel loved Frieren and she could love him.

I have a theory. Elves live for a very long time and even if you take into account Fireren age, as an elf she is emotionally a kid (teenager entry point), which is why she doesn't pay attention to romance and similar matters.

Or we go to the typical standard. So when you are aware that you will basically live for 80,000+ years, you don't really feel the need to love someone, be in a relationship or have children. Well, why do you need them?

On topic, OP, the show (and manga) very explicitly confirm that elves do not have strong sexual instincts (which is one of the reasons they are dying out), which I assume applies to Frieren too. I think she’s still capable of romantic attachments and even in the moment sexual arousal, but I just don’t think it’s an ongoing motivating drive for her like it nah be for a human.

Yeah, I also noticed it. You can see a lot of people raging over calling Frieren as asexual, yelling about "what does it have to do with this wholesome story?!", while the story itself mentions this aspect of elvish biology and society. It was explicitly mentioned that their romantic drive is poor, which leads them to live rather individualistic lives (even if they are a part of community), with relationships being rare. This leads to low fertility of elves, which, in consequence, has made their race almost extinct.

It's just a part of the lore. No need to seethe over it. Frieren is asexual and it's canon. She can like other folks, or even feel love towards them. However, her way of experiencing it or expressing it is different than non-asexual people. It was SOYmel's fault to choose Platonic, unrequited love, instead of actually talking to Frieren like a proper adult he was.

I guess a lot of fans raging over this trait of Frieren are either overly excited shippers, or just have no idea what does it mean to be asexual.

@Saygram So, the first case basically says she has the mind of a child when is comes to sexuality, so sexual interest in her in this case is, well... you know, right? Then, in the second case, that assumes people only think about relationships and sex for procreation when that's more a side effect and usually the furthest thing from their mind in the moment.

In any case, no need to dance around it. If ya got a thing for 1k+ year old elves with a near non existent libido, I'm not here to judge.

Dunno, but I see Himmel's love as obviously unrequited and am not a fan of the ship, I enjoyed the development over the course of the series though, through these flashbacks and old memories, and only see it as Freiren coming to more of an understanding, in terms of Himmel and her party.

I can see the author pushing for it down the road, as the feedback for this ship is very big, but it would have to be some good writing to convince me of Freiren's "love" for Himmel. If not, than I will be pretty disappointed.

I'm more for Fern and Stark's little thing they've kind of got going on...

Frieren is the ultimate weeb neet.

- Never had sex in more than 1000 years.

- Spent periods longer than a human lifespan secluded in a forest without a single friend.

That's why this is top #1 anime on MAL.

I personally think Frieren's journey to Ende is going to culminate in her realizing she loved Himmel. While she does bring up her race lacking romantic feelings and reproductive instincts, we also know Frieren is her own person and capable of change. I think through the developing relationship of Stark and Fern and maybe her conversation with Himmel at Ende she'll discover her feelings for Himmel as being love.

That's how I see her story going at least. If I end up being wrong, we've still got a great budding romance between Fern and Stark so I don't really mind, but I think completely rejecting and calling the potential idea weird is rather close-minded, especially with you asking people to hear you out and not bash you, only to bash them while denying what they think as cope.

They lack of reproduction and romantic instict doesn't mean they don't want to do it. term asexual is overly simplified imo. Frieren never stated that she doesn't like or want to be in relationships with someone iirc.

As much as elves are in this world. Frieren and Kraft confirmed that elves do not have any strong sexual desires or libido or in fact any desire to procreate, so they are slowly dying out. So it's not just Frieren, it's all elves. If you want to interpret it as being asexual that's fine, but we do know that elves do have sex and procreate, at least sometimes. Frieren not being the same age as Serie is one proof of elves procreating sometimes.

she is not A-sexual, that is a modern human construct. She is elf-sexual, less sexual desire or romantic feelings, just like it mentions....and that is IT! let's not wokify this masterpiece.

do you even fucking know the meaning of asexual 😭😭😭
asexual refers to the being to reproduce through themselves without the need of other individual (male or female)
frieren is an elf and she is not asexual
she is a female elf and it is stated that they aren't interested in reproducing not that they can't reproduce it's just that they have low chance of having a child

@Yasuki_29 Incorrect what you are referring to is Monoeious or Hermaphrodite, that is different than Asexual. Asexual means someone who does not experience sexual attraction toward individuals of any gender

@Yasuki_29 Being Asexual or even Aromantic doesn't make you avert to romance or sex, or even completely uninterested in either.

It's the closest description we have, but since it's built in to the entire race of elves, it is a little difference.

Still though, THIS IS OBJECTIVELY the single best way of writing concepts like this, It's just a part of the story, nothing more, nothing else.

Like how the inclusion of anything should be.

Anime is actually has been WAY better than the west at "representation" without that being the main goal. Like I had just given up on anyone writing a trans character that doesn't come off as propaganda, barely characterized garbage, but the aunt in skip loafer was great!

Like, you don't even have even have to think the whole "gender identity" thing makes sense, the truth is that people who are "trans" exist, and in correct proportion, there is nothing wrong with including them because they work within the story.

Most people hate the fact that these things are pushed down your throat with a shovel. they genuinely feel like propaganda. but it doesn't have to be like that.

Elves don't lack it, it's that they dont think it's as important and don't fall in love or have those desires as much as a human would. Elves still exist, which means that they still do.

They dont lack them entirely they just have low sex drive. This is basically used as a way to explain why there isnt quadrillions of elves considering how long they live.

Being asexual and being aromantic don't need to go together. Elves tend towards both. But it's clear that new elves come about through sex (or they wouldn't have mentioned it in the show) and not all elves are siblings, so their asexuality is likely a low amount of drive/desire rather than no drive. If teir romance tracks along similar lines, it's possible that Frieren feels for Himmel the way almost no other elf feels for anyone.

There's what's stated to be the case in world, and then what's shown to be the case in world. Just like in the real world, we should give more weight to the latter. So far we only see that Frieren feels something for her relationships of the party, and specifically, Himmel. But it hasn't really shown itself to be romance.

Are there really?
Because I haven't seen a single person talking about this topic til you brought this up personally (and I'm fairly active in here), do you have examples?

Depending on the example I can kinda understand. It's less about sexuality, and more about lack of instictive self-preservation of a given species, it's imprinted in elves' nature.

It's more accurate to compare Frieren to a panda (also naturally instinctively uninterested in self-preservation, thus why they are dying out) than to call her assexual (since their life outlook is widely different as a non-human being), the way she put it in her own words.

Other than that there's nothing to be like "how dare they deny this obvious thing!" about, her brain doesn't quite work the same as your average human in the first place, took her a while to even start understanding empathy at all, according to her old companions.

Sanjay63773 said:

PS:
Asexual people do have partners and also do have sex with people they are romantically involved with, they just have low interest in it for the most part. By all means, Frieren wouldn't have been born otherwise (as in, even if we really have to categorize her and elves as assexual as per human definition), it's perfectly possible
for her to be in a love relationship with Himmel (and have a sexual life perhaps) given the opportunity (but alas, it wasn't meant to be).

Not sure what you are trying to push here, but
so yeah, that's just as canon.

Obviously, they didn't pay attention to the anime when they addressed the elven biology to procreate, and I'm taking a huge assumption they even watched.

Elves arent asexual,
they lack interest on almost everything cause such a long lifespan comes with the price of tremendous boredom.
They are in decline cause they were hunt down by demons and there arent even real numbers to consider repopulation. we only know 3 so far.

And no, i dont think Frieren is asexual, she never had the chance of picking a partner from her own kind, ik we are used to see humans and elves together in other shows but doesnt seem the case in this show. the obvious ship with frieren its Himmel, but can a human 900yrs younger rly become an elf partner? Maybe he tough he was slowly winning her heart and she could only love him as a friend or even a son (in frierens world ofc - rememberteh concept of race is very strong, look at demons, its unconceivable for them to have relationshis with humans). To practice real love and monogamy would imply giving urself to a single person and never like someone again (like denken for example).

She would have to choose an elf who share her life expectancy or a human and be widowed for a millenia. Frieren never had the chance of developing next to other elves and mature emotionally plus she has the trauma of a sole survivor.
Elves arent asexual, otherwise they wouldnt exist XD

I can't believe this is a topic, no frieren is not asexual at least most likely not, the problem is she has a elf's reproductive cycle, which means what would happen immediately for us, could take her decades to realize, this is why it's up in the air if frieren was romantically in love with himmel, because if she was she realized it at his funeral.

This is a important point in the story about elves in general, elves are essentially what humans would become if they lived for 10k or possibly even 100k years in theory, everything we experience in a lifetime would be stretched out.

So is fireren asexual?
We don't know, though most likely not, she just has the sex drive of a person who lives for thousands of years, the short period of a friendship for a being like that is heavily a focus in this story, frieren still remembers flamme, who essentially was like a mother to her and himmel is brought up essentially once a episode by her, so whether she was romantically interested in them or not, himmel was extremely precious to frieren, so the answer to this question is likely that since none of her kind survived or so she thought, she's never had the decades it takes to understand what her emotional feelings are, so if she did love himmel, she never realized it until he died.
