Those are just some typical stereotypes in media in general. Less attractive characters are going to be dislikeable in personality and values in contrast to attractive characters. It's like those stereotypes you see of high schoolers in American 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s series. So naturally, most people are going to like the physically attractive characters. That's not to say that those characterizations represent everyone in real-life though. |

Western media inverts everything. The ugly must be the morally superior underdog, and if you don't cheer for it, then you are like the beautiful but vapid cheerleader valley girls at best, or a closet nazi eugenicist. Brainwashed slaves don't even know how brainwashed they are. If you suspect that there's some moral problem or underhanded/backwards reasoning with a preference for beauty, then you've been swallowing too much Hollywood. |

Can you define what you consider ugly and list a couple of characters as examples? Both ugliness and beautiness (is that even a word? Idc, you get what I mean) are pretty subjective. |

Its like they took a character from South Park and inserted it into this anime. And worse of all? All the girls are after his dick, like a harem. After all that shit, no wonder why people hate Accel World, its just there to make us feel pity for fat people. And it's not even a good try, its horrible and insulting. Read this review on Accel World, I'm pretty much trying to say that. |

Remember that guy Takeo Gouda from Ore Monogatari? He's pretty ugly. But we love him! Because he's an ugly character done right. Now lets look at another ugly character who's ugly but also a little bitch, Arita from Accel World. That is the kind of shit we want to avoid. Now to answer your main question. I and more than half of anime fans don't want to see an ugly character, that's just how it is. I personally find this question pretty dull, I mean isn't it obvious? Why would a person want to see an ugly character? That's how it is in anime and that's how it is in real life, deal with it. Also yeah, ugly characters in anime are better looking than real life ugly people, so yeah you see where I'm pitching at? Don't try to relate real life with anime. Anime standards are way too high for real life. I don't know what is your definition of ugly, do you mean human ugly or....? If you're talking about human ugliness then that's just really impossible. Now that I think of it, there are ugly people in anime! Go search "Ugly bastard" on Google. There are a lot of them in anime and don't worry, they are having the time of their life |

There are actually a few characters who are still appreciated even though their perceived as ugly. Tomoko Kuroki from Watamote is one of the most prominent example. |

That's a good question. Tomoko views herself as unattractive and desperately attempts to become more beautiful, so some of the show's audience do perceive her as ugly. But other people do view her as someone who is actually cute. In my opinion I view her as unattractive since it was intended for the anime's plot. |

I completely agree with you. With the combination of how she's portrayed along with her being a moe character, she's between ugly and not ugly. But if she wasn't a moe character and had a more realistic appearance, then the situation would be quite different. |

They are underappreciated just because they are ugly. This kind of discrimination can also be seen in real life. It's a really harsh truth. This situation has improved over the recent few years, though. |

If a character is designed ugly, a lot of the times the show itself doesn't think that highly of them in my experience. For example, Glass Mask's Chigusa Tsukikage is a straight-up abuser and has the main character do awful things like being locked in a small toolshed for days in the rain and snow until they get motivated to act Meanwhile, you have other ugly characters like teruteru(DR2) whose just a very stereotypical pervert character whose only interesting part about that is that he's a bisexual and sometimes uses food for his perversions: ^which makes him better than say most pervert characters who show it in a similar way(i.e saying creepy personal stuff and overstepping boundaries in their lust), but worse than say the other DR2 characters. And then you have the prime minister of Akame ga Kill, and he's pretty par to the course when it comes to the villains in that show. In other words, 1-note and very forgettable. There are good characters who aren't conventionally attractive, but most I remember are in obscure shows like Anne of Green Gables, Laughing Salesman NEW, or Bokudolls. I mean you do have Ryoma from DRV3 and Yamada was fine from what I remember from DR the anime, but that's pretty much it. The other non-attractive characters aren't that good imo. |

It's one of those shitty tropes across all fiction, like we can only care for a character if he/she is a normative beauty. There's also that stylized "ugly" is often appealing because it still tries to be catchy to the eye. AquaMailman said: Western media inverts everything. Where are your examples? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure "ugly" characters are less popular, but I also think "ugly" characters are probably not often written to be likable. But if there is a well written "ugly" character, who is not just written to be hated, it'll surely make it more popular. |

And actually Ugly Betty doesn't help your case, Shrek is a parody, Ghostbusters is a remake of a nerd comedy from the 80s with women (so much for the normative beauty of the old cast yeah), and Harry Potter had child actors growing through their roles. |
