THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Thought this one was pretty lame. I wanted to see a big shadow of something dragging Onii-chan. Didn't even have to show the monster.

This has been a lame season all around in my opinion. "Death Day" (episode 2) has been the best one so far, and I liked the laughing one, but other than that, thumbs down. Possibly the worst season of Yami Shibai so far.

Probably my favorite episode since 8.4. I really liked the animation style and how much time they spend building up the sibling's relationship. The soundtrack here was really good as well.
However, I am still not sure if I like them skipping the usual jumpscare. It creates more imagination, but less shock.

I agree, episode 2 has been the only good one this season . . .

They could have shown the monster, they could have gotten well.

Looks like whoever wrote the script for this episode just gave up mid-way. The art is pretty nice though, 1 point for the art. The story, hell, the whole season is the lamest and most boring out of all eight. They dont even show the monsters and horrible transformations now. I think I'll finish this season and call it quits, they should have stopped around season 4 or 5.

They haven't shown one spook or monster the entire season but I honestly felt they needed to show at least something this time. Could have been a great episode but now it just falls short like the entire season.

The art was very good in this episode. It would be good if they kept it.

About the story... Well, contrary to the popular opinion, I'd say this is the best episode of this season so far. I was always on the brink of my seat, and I do think they nailed it with the psychological horror.

Bear in mind you don't have to show the actual monster or a jumpscare in order to make someone feel frightened. Sometimes the best kind of horror is the one that is born out of your own imagination.

I must say I have enjoyed the ambiguous finals. I see they have went with an experimental take in this season, and it's good how do they leave the actual monster up to you, the viewer.

This is an untoppable episode that kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved that the innocence of the child led her into a more and more dangerous situation

Yeah on some of these it needs the jump scare, like this one. It was actually really eerie and you're wondering what's going to happen or what's going to pop up, and then nothing happens at the end and it just kind of was anticlimactic because of that. If it had the jumpscare this episode would have been 10 times better.

I still think back on the first season of yamishibai and just think how good those fierce view episodes were because of the jumpscare.

Hell I'll still show people episode 1 of umishi by because people jump, you don't see it coming or you have a feeling but it still gets you.

Right! I thought that too, I was like a black lady at the movies!

I was like oh no girl. Run back to your parents oniichans dead!
Please God don't kill the loli, you can have the shota but plz not tiny imouto!

It was a good episode that kept you on edge and the footprints scenes and music helped. Ending would be better with jumpscare.

This anime has been going down hill for a few seasons now but this series is an utter joke. Just one episode I would like to see the big scary monster rather than being built up with some anticipation and being blue balled ¬¬

This snow episode wasn't to bad. The girl did a great job and manage to sound really distressed. But i wanted to see the snow monster Lol

Best episode so far IMO

Definitely a standout episode this season. Conceptually it's nothing too special, but the way it utilized the 4 minutes drew a strong emotional throughline. I'm also in the camp that the most effective horror is the things that we don't see, what the monster actually looks like is never as unnerving as what the blind spots in your mind are filled with. I definitely don't miss the unintentionally hilarious monster shots from season 3.

Kinda weird to see so many people wanting the jumpscares back, considering personally they were my biggest problem with Season 1. The over-reliance on jumpscares really hurt the first season, and their inclusion hurt a few episodes for me. I believe the episode was called Hair, it was definitely one of the strongest for me but the jumpscare ending hurt it. The tension building to a lame typical startle jumpscare always deflated me, especially with how prevalent they were, they quickly become too predictable to be effective.

That's not to say the alternative method is always better, it needs to be properly implemented, and I don't think it was here. Look at episode 2, they handled it well, the ending was effective despite not showcasing what happened because they built up the tension, and unseen nature of the ghost, and they made sure to end off quickly after it's revealed how bad things are, with the final lines being the appropriately unsettling, "What the hell have we been letting into our home these last 10 years".

Here though, it doesn't really end off on an effective line or moment, and it doesn't wrap up quickly enough after it's clear to the audience and those involved, things are about to end. The shot where she discovers her brothers blood on the ground, that was the time to end it. Have the quick bell ringing and then close it. You'd have enough information to properly gauge what likely happened next, and it leaves you off with unsettling imagery.

Instead it continues and it doesn't really do anything new. The footsteps disappearing don't really add anything in service of horror, and they already played off the bell ringing so much previously, the continuous return of it started to feel redundant rather than effective. I'm surprised they didn't end with that sound, but instead like five-ten seconds of her just making scared noises until it dragged to an end.

You still need to create an effective stopping point for these to be effective, and this didn't do that, instead it last far past the most effective point and those lead to a disappointing whimper of an ending.

It's upsetting because this could've been the strongest of the season. The siblings had enough a quick relationship established to somewhat care about them, the buildup to what happened to the brother was well-handled, the escalation of the footsteps, finding the glove, and then finding the blood. The music was quite well here, and I knew once their ringing caps were introduced those were going to play into effective horror.

But it all feels squandered because they kept going instead of concluding when it should've.

An "OK" Episode, kinda sad for the girl losing her dear brother, I like the end that not necessarily implies that she got caught or killed by the monster so I like to think she lived, by the way, I think this is the first time we are shown blood in Yami Shibai, it was just a little blood stain in the snow but kinda notable.
The scarce minutes we were shown of her and her brother were enough to build up a rapport for the character, I really felt bad that she lost her brother and I felt impotent that I couldn't do anything to save her or help her.

This whole season has been trash except for few ones, instead of showing some and leaving rest to imagination or just giving some kind of conclusion they just don't show anything at all and hope viewers would make something up

Even in this episode a good ending would have been if they showed the monster slowly coming towards her or some kind of silhoutte of it, or maybe it was that the boy was monster all along something like a werewolf

But nah they don't show anything at all

Agree that in this case showing the monster in question would have improved the episode by a long shot.
